FFmpeg can encode and send media to YouTube, but a continuous setup still needs playlist logic and process supervision. Choose Owncast if you also want a separate self-hosted destination and are prepared to administer a server.
Owncast and FFmpeg do different jobs

They can play different roles in one architecture, but the official documentation cited here does not establish a ready-made Owncast-to-YouTube relay or an Owncast playlist scheduler. For YouTube alone, an Owncast server may add work without providing a destination you need.
Choose by destination and operating responsibility
Choose direct-to-YouTube encoding when
- YouTube is the intended viewing destination.
- You can manage the media playlist, encoder process, and recovery when the source ends or a connection drops.
- You can provide enough sustained upload bandwidth and encoding capacity for the chosen output.
Choose Owncast when
- You want a self-hosted viewing destination in addition to, or instead of, YouTube.
- You can run and administer a server, expose the required network access, and manage credentials.
- You have configured each destination separately. RTMP compatibility does not by itself establish a turnkey fan-out or dual-output design.
Neither option is shown by the cited official documentation to be more reliable or resource-efficient for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streaming. No comparative benchmark is established, so plan capacity and recovery around your own deployment rather than assuming one tool has better uptime.
Direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube: what the workflow requires
YouTube’s encoder setup asks you to configure its live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL, for ingest. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS ingest guidance.

- Prepare a continuous media source. Decide how files will play in sequence, what happens at the end of a file or playlist, and how you will respond if the input is missing. The cited official sources do not provide a complete 24/7 playlist-and-restart configuration.
- Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Live, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Configure the encoder for your media and connection. Use an output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval suitable for the source, machine, and upload connection. YouTube’s current recommendations are in its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream.
- Supervise the process. A 24/7 design needs a way to detect a stopped process, failed connection, or exhausted input and a tested response. Monitor YouTube’s stream health; the cited YouTube pages do not prescribe a complete process supervisor or automatic-restart setup.
- Plan recordings and archives separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise the same automatic archival behavior for one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. Check current YouTube behavior, consider splitting long broadcasts, and keep a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
For encoder parameter choices, follow YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than treating another product’s example command as a universal preset. The media, output quality, available upload bandwidth, and encoding capacity all affect the right configuration.
When Owncast belongs in the setup
Owncast accepts broadcast software that sends RTMP, though its documentation notes that not every application has been tested. Its default ingest uses TCP port 1935 and the /live/ path with a stream key. The web interface uses port 8080 in the manual-install documentation. - Install Owncast on a server that is reachable by your broadcasting software and configure the required network access.
- Replace default credentials and set a secure stream key during setup.
- Configure broadcasting software to send an RTMP feed to the Owncast endpoint. Owncast’s FFmpeg example demonstrates camera-and-audio capture to Owncast; it is not a ready-made prerecorded-file playlist or YouTube command.
- If you also want YouTube, configure it as a separate destination. The cited sources do not verify a turnkey relay from Owncast to YouTube.
Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for assured compatibility and a two-second keyframe interval. Its documentation warns that higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and encoding capacity, which vary by server and network. In FFmpeg, -g is a frame count, so twice the frame rate yields a two-second interval: for example, at 30 fps, that means 60 frames. Owncast’s example uses libx264 with the veryfast preset; it trades compression efficiency for lower CPU use compared with a slower preset. Its sample AAC values—128 kbps and 44.1 kHz—are examples, not universal requirements. See the Owncast FFmpeg documentation and broadcasting guidance.
Test continuity, copyright, and recovery before going 24/7
- Test representative content: include the kinds of motion and audio that will actually run, then check stream health rather than assuming a successful connection means a healthy broadcast.
- Test transitions and failure handling: confirm what happens between files, at playlist end, after a network interruption, and if the encoder exits. The restart and playlist behavior must be supplied by your chosen workflow; the cited product guides do not define a full 24/7 solution.
- Secure credentials: protect YouTube’s stream key and replace Owncast’s default credentials and stream key if using Owncast.
- Confirm rights to every recording and audio track: permission to rebroadcast recorded videos is distinct from having a working encoder. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting.
- Plan for long broadcasts: do not rely on YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition for a single 24-hour stream.
