There is no universal VPS size for Owncast. CPU demand depends mainly on whether you transcode and how many output qualities you create; Owncast does not publish a generic RAM minimum. For direct delivery, the key bandwidth calculation is each output’s bitrate multiplied by the viewers using it. And Owncast is not, by itself, a YouTube relay: it accepts an RTMP broadcast and serves its own viewers over HLS. Sending a stream to YouTube is a separate destination setup.
First, separate Owncast from YouTube
Owncast accepts an RTMP broadcast and serves viewers through HLS. Its guide describes converting a source stream into short HLS segments and playlists, optionally in multiple qualities. YouTube Live is a separate destination: an encoder sends video to YouTube using YouTube’s stream URL and key. The Owncast documentation does not establish a built-in workflow that forwards Owncast ingest to YouTube.
For a YouTube broadcast, configure an encoder with YouTube’s URL and stream key. If you also want to serve Owncast viewers, configure the encoder or another verified setup to send a separate stream to Owncast’s RTMP endpoint and key. These are distinct destinations with separate settings and network requirements. Keep both keys private: each authorizes a broadcast to its destination. Owncast’s broadcasting guide and YouTube’s setup guidance explain their respective workflows.
How to estimate Owncast CPU and RAM
CPU depends on transcoding and output count
Owncast says, “It is impossible to give a single answer for what the requirements are for you to run Owncast, or what it will cost.” Its examples are rough, not guarantees; actual CPU use varies with codec, bitrate, resolution, and encoder preset. In broad terms, passthrough uses minimal CPU, one transcoded output is light, two quality outputs are moderate, and three outputs or heavy compression are heavy.

Owncast offers a rough heuristic that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, but hardware and settings vary. Do not treat that as a firm core-per-output sizing rule. Start with one output, test on the VPS you intend to use, and add variants one at a time only if the server handles them. If performance is poor, reduce output variants, input quality or frame rate, or choose less CPU-intensive encoding settings. Higher frame rates increase both server work and viewer bandwidth. See Owncast’s video guide for output configuration guidance.
RAM has no published universal floor
The reviewed Owncast resource guidance does not give a general-purpose VPS RAM minimum. Choose RAM for your actual deployment and monitor usage under load; a numerical recommendation needs evidence for a specific workload, not a generic Owncast rule. Avoid selecting a plan from CPU and RAM labels alone.
Calculate direct viewer-delivery bandwidth
When the VPS serves HLS segments directly, viewer delivery is usually the main bandwidth sizing issue. For each output quality, use:

(bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB
Its arithmetic example for a two-hour stream at 4,000 kbps is 36 GB for 10 viewers, 90 GB for 25 viewers, and 180 GB for 50 viewers. These are illustrative calculations, not a hosting allowance or audience forecast. Actual traffic depends on stream duration, bitrate, viewers, and which output each viewer receives. The formulas and examples are on Owncast’s resource-requirements page.

Owncast estimates that a 1 Gbps port could support roughly 200 viewers at 5,000 kbps. That is a rough reference, not a promise of sustained throughput or included monthly transfer. Before choosing a VPS, check its actual outbound throughput limits, transfer allocation, overage policy, region, and fair-use terms. A nominal port speed by itself does not establish those details.

Keep Owncast and YouTube encoder settings distinct
Settings suitable for an Owncast input are not automatically YouTube’s recommended ingest settings. Owncast’s broadcast examples suggest H.264 video, AAC audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and these bitrates. YouTube publishes its own destination recommendations, including different rates for H.264.
| Resolution and frame rate | Owncast example bitrate | YouTube H.264 minimum | YouTube H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 5,000 kbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 4,500 kbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 4,000 kbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3,000 kbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
The YouTube values are its current live encoder recommendations for H.264 at the listed resolutions and frame rates; other codecs have different ranges. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds). It accepts AAC or MP3 audio and recommends RTMPS for encryption. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple playback formats for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and Owncast’s broadcast settings.
Owncast says H.264 and AAC provide its best compatibility. Although it recognizes H.265 and some other audio formats at ingest, transcoding and playback compatibility are assured only for H.264 and AAC in its guidance. Use destination-specific settings if you send separate copies to Owncast and YouTube; do not assume one bitrate satisfies both.

Account for ingest separately from egress
The broadcaster’s upload to Owncast ingest is not the same as the VPS’s outbound delivery to viewers. If a separately configured process also sends a copy from the VPS to YouTube, budget that additional outbound stream independently. Its bitrate depends on the YouTube encoder settings selected for the copy. Likewise, do not count the YouTube copy as viewer delivery from Owncast unless the VPS is also serving Owncast viewers.
Owncast installation documentation lists port 1935 for RTMP ingest and port 8080 for its web interface. Confirm the ports and firewall rules for your installation and hosting environment in the installation guide.
When S3-compatible storage can help
With direct delivery, Owncast handles encoding, segmentation, and serving video to viewers, so audience growth increases VPS outbound traffic. Owncast also supports S3-compatible object storage for distributing video segments. In that arrangement, the server uploads one copy of each configured quality and the storage service handles viewer-facing delivery. This can ease the VPS’s viewer-egress burden, but it does not remove the server’s encoding work.
Compare the added setup and operational complexity with the VPS bandwidth it may save, and check the storage provider’s current storage, request, and egress charges before choosing it. The Owncast guides describe the feature, but do not establish provider-specific prices. See Owncast’s performance guidance.

A practical sizing and testing sequence
- Decide where the stream goes. Specify whether the VPS serves Owncast viewers, sends a separately configured copy to YouTube, or does both. Treat each destination as a distinct stream with its own URL, key, settings, and bandwidth.
- Start with one output. Use a moderate configuration, then test CPU, network throughput, and playback on the intended machine before adding quality variants.
- Estimate direct egress. Multiply each output’s kbps by its expected concurrent viewers, divide by 1,000, and sum the outputs. Estimate monthly transfer separately using duration and audience assumptions.
- Verify the VPS limits. Match your estimates against the provider’s sustained outbound limits, included transfer, overage rules, region, and traffic terms—not just its advertised port speed.
- Test under realistic load. Watch resource and network use during a representative stream. If encoding strains CPU, simplify outputs or settings. If direct delivery strains bandwidth, consider reducing delivered bitrate or evaluating S3-compatible segment delivery.
- Set each destination deliberately. Use Owncast’s settings for its input and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the YouTube copy; protect each destination’s key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, rather than operate Owncast for its own HLS audience, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
