How to Restart an Owncast YouTube Stream Automatically with systemd

Learn when to restart Owncast versus a separate YouTube publisher, configure the right systemd service, and troubleshoot failures.

First identify which process needs to restart: systemd can restart the Owncast server after it exits, but a separate encoder or relay that publishes to YouTube needs its own recovery setup. For a Linux server running systemd, Owncast’s recommended service uses a dedicated account, Restart=always and RestartSec=5. If your YouTube stream is sent by FFmpeg, manage FFmpeg as a separate service rather than assuming restarting Owncast will restore it.

Owncast server or YouTube publisher: which one needs restarting?

Owncast is a live-streaming server that accepts broadcasts from RTMP-capable software. YouTube’s stream key is configured in the encoder that publishes to YouTube. These are separate jobs: restarting Owncast does not necessarily restart a separate YouTube publishing process. The official Owncast pages reviewed describe broadcasting to an Owncast instance, not a built-in forwarding path to YouTube; this distinction is limited to those sources, and does not rule out third-party integrations. Owncast’s project description and YouTube’s stream-key guidance explain the respective roles.

  • If the Owncast process exits or must start at boot, create a systemd unit for Owncast.
  • If an encoder such as FFmpeg publishes to YouTube and that process exits, create a separate unit for the publisher.
  • If a stream stalls while its process remains running, a process restart policy alone may not detect or fix the stalled output.

How to restart Owncast after a crash

These instructions apply to a Linux system using systemd. Owncast’s service guide recommends a unit at /etc/systemd/system/owncast.service. Adapt the paths and account names to your installation. The working directory should contain the Owncast binary and data/; ExecStart should point to the full binary path. Owncast says, “Do not run Owncast as root.” Use a dedicated service account with access to the installation and write permission for its data directory. See the Owncast service guide.

1. Create the service unit

Open the unit file with an editor, for example:

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/owncast.service

Use this service definition, changing paths or account details if needed:

Type=simple
WorkingDirectory=/opt/owncast
ExecStart=/opt/owncast/owncast
User=owncast
Group=owncast

Restart=always tells systemd to restart the service when it exits; RestartSec=5 sets the delay in this example to five seconds. This is a process-level policy, not a guarantee that every stream interruption will be detected.

2. Load the unit, start Owncast and enable boot startup

Run:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast
systemctl status owncast
journalctl -u owncast -f

daemon-reload makes systemd read the new unit. enable --now both starts Owncast immediately and configures it to start at boot. In the status output, look for active (running). Follow the journal while checking startup or reproducing a failure. The Owncast guide says to confirm the server by loading it on port 8080; whether that port is reachable externally depends on your network and firewall configuration.

3. Check permissions and optional hardening

If Owncast fails to start or write data, verify that the service account can read the installation and write to the actual data directory. The guide’s optional hardening example includes ProtectSystem=strict, ReadWritePaths=/opt/owncast, NoNewPrivileges=true, SecureBits=noroot and ProtectHome=read-only. With a strict filesystem policy, explicitly allow writes to the real Owncast data path; otherwise Owncast may be unable to save its data. Adjust every path to your installation before using those settings.

How to keep a separate FFmpeg stream to YouTube running

If FFmpeg is the process publishing to YouTube, manage it independently from Owncast. It needs its own input, output settings, credentials, logs and restart policy. YouTube places the stream key in the encoder configuration. Keep the key secret; if it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, after which the encoder must be updated with the replacement key. See YouTube’s stream-key instructions.

Use systemd for process exits and FFmpeg recovery for certain network failures

systemd can restart an FFmpeg process that exits. FFmpeg also documents RTMP publishing with FLV output and a FIFO muxer pattern that attempts recovery from temporary network failures every second. That in-process behavior addresses certain transient output failures; it does not guarantee recovery from invalid credentials, an unavailable input or every YouTube-side condition. A service restart policy and FFmpeg’s output recovery work at different layers. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.

Do not copy the angle-bracket placeholders as literal arguments. Choose the encoder, codecs, source and output settings for your stream. FFmpeg supports RTMP variants including RTMPS; use the endpoint and settings provided for your encoder. Avoid exposing the key in examples, command histories or logs. An environment file is one possible way to separate configuration, but ensure its permissions prevent unauthorized access to the secret.

Container and non-systemd deployments

The Owncast systemd example is for Linux systems running systemd. Owncast directs Docker deployments to use Docker’s restart: unless-stopped policy instead of this unit. On macOS, the corresponding service manager is launchd; the systemd commands above do not apply. See the Owncast installation and service guidance.

Troubleshooting automatic restarts

  1. Check the intended service: run systemctl status owncast or systemctl status with the publisher’s actual unit name. Confirm which process is active and inspect its exit status.
  2. Read the service journal: run journalctl -u owncast -f, substituting the publisher unit name when troubleshooting FFmpeg. Watch the logs while reproducing the failure.
  3. Verify the unit configuration: check that ExecStart points to the right executable, the working directory is correct, and the service account can read the needed files.
  4. For Owncast, check data access and reachability: make sure the data directory is writable by the service account and that the web service responds on its configured port. Check firewall and network rules if you cannot reach it externally.
  5. For a YouTube publisher, check the stream path: confirm the input is available, the stream key is current, and the encoder logs show a successful output connection. If you reset a compromised key, update the encoder configuration.
  6. Distinguish a crash from a stall: systemd’s restart policy reacts to process termination. If the process remains active while video stops reaching YouTube, inspect the encoder’s input and output behavior; a process restart policy alone cannot diagnose a stalled stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than maintain an Owncast server and publisher on your own machine, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
