Restreamer itself is presented by its project as having no ongoing license costs. Self-hosting a YouTube stream is not therefore cost-free: you supply the computer or server, internet upload and any electricity, setup, and maintenance the deployment requires. If you already have suitable always-on hardware and flat-rate broadband, your incremental bill may be small; renting a VPS makes hosting a recurring expense. There is no well-supported universal monthly total—the right estimate depends on your equipment, connection, stream workload, and hosting terms.
What Restreamer costs—and what it does not
Datarhei Restreamer is self-hosted software for relaying a stream to services including YouTube. Its project repository describes it as having “no ongoing license costs.” That refers to the software license, not the resources required to run it. You still need a host, a sufficiently reliable upload connection, and time or paid help for configuration and upkeep. Datarhei Restreamer project
Restreamer is different from Restream, the separate cloud multistreaming service. Restream’s plan prices are not Restreamer license or self-hosting prices. The cloud service may be a different option if you want managed multistreaming, but compare its features and terms rather than treating its price as the cost of running Restreamer.
The cost drivers to include in your estimate
- Host: existing local hardware has an up-front purchase cost if you need to buy it; a rented VPS has a recurring bill. Either must have the resources for your specific stream and deployment.
- Internet connection and bandwidth: a home setup needs adequate, dependable upload and a data plan that suits your stream duration. For a VPS, check included transfer allowances and overage terms.
- Electricity: include the extra power used if a local computer or board must stay on. The sources do not give a device-specific power figure or electricity rate, so calculate it for your hardware and location.
- Setup and maintenance: Docker, networking, secure credentials, updates, and troubleshooting take time. Router or firewall work may require paid assistance, but no standard labor price is published.
- Processing needs: the project documents hardware-acceleration options and multiple CPU architectures, but that does not establish that every inexpensive host can encode every resolution or serve every number of destinations.
Datarhei’s FAQ gives a dated rule of thumb: “An HD live stream can quickly consume over 1 GB of data PER DAY(!).” The page footer is © 2022, and actual usage depends on bitrate and hours streamed. Treat this as a warning to check your own data terms, not a current guaranteed usage figure or a basis for a universal annual cost. The FAQ recommends flat-rate broadband. Restreamer FAQ

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Local hardware or a VPS?
| Option | What you pay for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable local computer or board | Any equipment you need to buy, incremental electricity, and possibly setup or assistance. If you already own suitable hardware, there may be no separate hosting invoice. | That it can stay on; upload capacity and data-plan terms; router/firewall setup; security; and whether its processing capacity fits your stream. |
| Rented VPS | A recurring server charge, with possible bandwidth or workload costs according to the provider’s terms. | Prepayment term, introductory versus renewal rate, included bandwidth, resources, and current price at checkout. |
One provider example illustrates why a headline monthly figure is not the whole cost. Hostinger’s Restreamer page displayed a KVM 1 introductory offer of $6.49/month at the time reflected in the reviewed material; it said plans are paid upfront and the monthly rate is the full term price divided by the number of months. The page listed a two-year renewal rate of $11.99/month. These are that provider’s changeable, term-dependent offer and renewal terms—not a general VPS market rate or an all-in Restreamer cost. Check the current checkout price, payment term, renewal, and bandwidth conditions before committing. Hostinger Restreamer VPS
For an apples-to-apples comparison, total the costs over the same period. For local hosting, include hardware purchases you would not otherwise make, incremental power, connectivity changes, and setup. For a VPS, include the full amount due upfront, renewal price, and any transfer or workload charges. Add your own value for maintenance time if that matters to your decision. The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison or complete lifecycle-cost model, so the result has to use your own equipment, rates, and stream settings.

Setup obligations that can affect cost and risk
The official quick start documents a Docker deployment. Its example maps container ports 8080, 8181, 1935, 1936, and UDP 6000; it identifies public HTTP 80 and HTTPS 443 as standard ports and says forwarding 80→8080 and 443→8181 is needed for full functionality in that setup. Whether this requires router or firewall changes depends on where and how you host. Do not expose an administration interface publicly without securing access and network configuration. The quick start specifically warns you to choose a secure, unique password and includes a YouTube publication-service example. Official quick start
The repository includes AMD64, ARMv7, and ARM64 examples, a Raspberry Pi image, and Nvidia CUDA and Intel VAAPI images. It notes that --privileged is used in examples for local devices such as USB cameras; that is not a universal requirement for a video relay. External access may require router port forwarding for HTTP/S, RTMP/S, or SRT, depending on the setup. Confirm current compatibility and resource needs before choosing hardware. Calculate your own monthly and first-year cost
- Choose the deployment: price the local equipment you need, or record the VPS amount due upfront and the renewal terms.
- Check connectivity: estimate sustained upload needs from your stream settings and schedule, then check home data caps or VPS transfer allowances and overage rates.
- Add ongoing local expenses: estimate additional electricity from the host’s expected draw and the rate on your bill. Do not count your entire broadband bill if it would be paid regardless; count any incremental connection cost.
- Include one-time and operational costs: include setup assistance, router or firewall work, and any hardware purchase. Separately decide whether your maintenance time belongs in your comparison.
- Compare equal periods: calculate both a first-year total and a recurring-year total, keeping introductory VPS pricing separate from renewal pricing.
Because hardware, electricity, labor, and internet pricing vary by location—and the sources do not specify a “typical” setup—any single all-in monthly number would be false precision.
