First check whether the source and Restreamer’s local player show moving video; then check Restreamer’s video processing, the YouTube destination, and YouTube Live’s stream-health messages. Audio working does not prove that Restreamer is receiving or publishing decodable video, and the symptom alone does not identify one universal cause.
Find the stage where the picture disappears
Restreamer’s troubleshooting guidance separates the video-input, player-streaming, and publication-service stages. Check each in order rather than changing several settings at once. Before you begin, save the current configuration and note the details that determine which troubleshooting branch applies.
- Restreamer version.
- Source type and address or device: for example, a network stream, internal RTMP input, or USB source.
- Any upstream encoder, such as OBS, and its video and audio settings.
- Restreamer’s video and audio codec modes and the destination protocol.
- Whether moving video appears in Restreamer’s local player.
- YouTube Live’s stream-health status and any message text.
Use the local picture as the first dividing line
If the local Restreamer player is black too, focus first on the source and Restreamer’s input, processing, or player path. If the local player shows video but YouTube is black, focus on the selected destination, publishing configuration, and YouTube’s ingest status.
Test the source independently
Datarhei’s current Basic Troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the problem also occurs with a test transmission. Use Restreamer’s documented virtual-source or test-transmission procedure, following the instructions for your installed version.

- The virtual test shows video, but the production source does not: investigate the original camera or incoming stream, the selected source profile, its connection, and the video codec it provides. The right check depends on whether your source is a device or a network input such as RTMP, SRT, HLS, or RTSP.
- Both the virtual test and production source are black locally: continue to Restreamer’s process details, video-processing path, and player-streaming stage. The source alone is less likely to explain a failure that also affects the test.
A working audio track is not evidence that the video track is present or decodable. YouTube specifies audio and video requirements separately, so check the video path on its own.
Check Restreamer’s video mode and codec compatibility
Restreamer may pass the source video through without re-encoding it. Datarhei’s older encoding guide, which describes Restreamer 0.4.0-era behavior, says the default video codec setting is copy; it describes selecting H.264 to force video encoding. That is version-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every current Restreamer release uses the same default or controls.

- Check your installed version’s encoding settings and confirm which video codec is arriving from the source.
- Determine whether that source codec is compatible with the chosen publishing path.
- If appropriate, test H.264 encoding as a controlled change, rather than changing unrelated settings at the same time.
- Watch CPU use and process logs during the test. Encoding uses processing resources, so a transcode is not cost-free.
Do not treat an H.264 change as an automatic fix. Verify the version and source first; the older Restreamer guide documents one available compatibility option, not the cause of every black-picture problem.
If Restreamer shows video but YouTube does not
When moving video is visible in Restreamer’s local player, check the publication path next. Verify that Restreamer is publishing to the intended YouTube event and that its RTMP destination configuration is correct. Then inspect the YouTube Live dashboard’s preview, stream health, and messages while the stream is active.

Datarhei’s older YouTube-specific Restreamer guide describes entering YouTube’s RTMP URL and checking the Live dashboard after publication starts. That page is marked deprecated for Restreamer 0.6.x, so use it cautiously and prefer instructions matching your installed version. A healthy local preview alongside a black YouTube preview points toward the destination or ingest branch, but YouTube’s message and Restreamer’s logs are needed to narrow it further.
Verify encoder settings for the actual connection
Use the settings guidance for the path you actually have; OBS-to-Restreamer recommendations are not universal Restreamer requirements.

YouTube live ingestion
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube table for your exact output mode instead of applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube also recommends testing with movement and checking stream health during the event.
When OBS feeds Restreamer
For an OBS-to-Restream connection, Restream’s setup guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, Main profile, NV12 color format, and 709 color space; it also points to OBS Analyzer for checking settings, the connection, and stream health. These are recommendations for that connection path, not a set of mandatory datarhei Restreamer settings for every source.

Check logs and ask for help with useful evidence
If the virtual-source test does not isolate the failure, inspect Restreamer’s process details and logs. Datarhei’s troubleshooting guidance asks users to attach a process report when seeking help. Include the information below so support can distinguish an input problem from a publishing problem.
- Restreamer version and source type.
- Video and audio codec settings, plus details of any upstream encoder.
- Whether the local Restreamer player shows moving video and whether the virtual test works.
- The destination protocol and the selected YouTube event.
- YouTube’s exact stream-health or error message.
- A time-stamped example and the relevant process report or logs.
