For a scheduled, finite prerecorded broadcast, Restream remains a viable option: it can schedule a video to air automatically and supports advance YouTube event posts. For a continuous YouTube stream, consider a cloud service such as StreamNeo; for local control, use OBS Studio; and for dedicated computer-free playout, consider the AJA HELO Plus. The right choice depends on whether you need a one-time event or an ongoing loop—and where you want playback to run.
Choose by the kind of stream you need
| Need | Best-fit approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A scheduled, bounded broadcast or finite playlist | Restream Upload & Stream | Its video loops are capped, and its playlists do not natively repeat. |
| Local playback with hands-on control | OBS Studio on a computer | The computer, encoder, power, internet connection, and monitoring remain your responsibility. |
| Continuous unattended streaming from uploaded videos | StreamNeo, a cloud service for YouTube | It is a YouTube-only service and streams uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed. |
| Scheduled prerecorded playback without a general-purpose computer | AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder | It is a specialist hardware purchase; current price and availability are not established here. |
What Restream can and cannot replace
Restream’s Upload & Stream workflow lets you upload or select a video, set event details and a date and time, choose distribution channels, and have the video air automatically. YouTube supports creating an event post in advance. Restream is therefore a reasonable fit when you want a scheduled, finite broadcast rather than an indefinite channel loop. See Restream’s scheduling guide.
Single-video loops have a defined end
Restream’s Help Center page dated March 11, 2026 says a single video can play up to 10 times, with a maximum total stream length of 40 hours. The video may be an upload or a stream recording. Those limits make this a finite repeat, not a 24/7 loop. Details are in Restream’s video scheduling and looping documentation.
Playlists are bounded and do not natively repeat
Restream’s current playlist documentation, checked October 3, 2026, allows playlists up to 24 hours long and 40 videos. The documented playlist feature requires a Marathon or Media add-on tier. You can schedule and preview a playlist, but videos can only be added, removed, or reordered before it goes live. Playlists do not natively loop; Restream suggests duplicating videos within the 40-item cap to approximate a repeat sequence. Check the playlist documentation and current plan details before choosing it, since plan limits can change.

Alternatives for prerecorded YouTube streams

2. OBS Studio for local looping
OBS is a local encoder: media plays and is encoded on your computer. Its Media Source supports formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, with a Loop setting. For an ordered playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source has a Loop Playlist setting; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. The official OBS Media Sources guide describes these controls.

OBS gives you direct control and avoids paying for a hosted streaming service, but it does not turn a local computer into an unattended cloud event. The computer must remain powered, OBS must keep running, and the internet connection must hold up. You are also responsible for configuring and monitoring the encoder.
3. AJA HELO Plus for dedicated playout
YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for YouTube Live. Its optional PlayToStream function is described as scheduling prerecorded media for direct streaming to YouTube without a computer; the listing also mentions built-in graphics and remote monitoring. This can suit recurring playout when you want dedicated hardware rather than a general-purpose PC. The directory listing does not establish current price, stock, firmware status, or fit for every home setup, so verify those before buying. See YouTube’s encoder directory.

4. Other cloud and browser tools
YouTube’s encoder directory describes Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. That directory description establishes a continuous-streaming category, but it does not specify uploaded-video workflow, loop controls, plan limits, or prices. Confirm those details with the provider before relying on it for prerecorded playout.
YouTube lists StreamYard as a browser-based live streaming and podcast studio. The official materials cited here do not establish a repeat-loop or unattended prerecorded-video workflow, so it is better understood as a live-produced show or interview tool than a confirmed replacement for looping uploaded video.

Set up a YouTube stream safely
Check channel eligibility and event setup
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Set up an encoder or service ahead of the planned start, check the preview, and monitor audio and video during the stream. YouTube’s live streaming guidance covers eligibility and preparation. YouTube notes: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Dedicated hardware is optional, not a prerequisite.
Match encoder settings to the stream
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streams, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and sets a maximum of four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the value for your intended output in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every video. Check the preview before starting and monitor the live output.
Review rights and channel policies
Having a prerecorded file does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, artwork, and other material, and review YouTube’s current policies. A stream that remains technically online is not a substitute for policy compliance or an original channel strategy.
Choose based on effort, control, and cost
- Choose Restream when a scheduled, finite event or playlist is enough and its current plan limits suit your runtime. Its scheduling and advance YouTube event support are useful, but its documented loops end and playlists do not natively repeat.
- Choose OBS when you want hands-on local control and can keep the machine, encoder, and connection running and monitored.
- Choose StreamNeo when you want uploaded videos to keep streaming to YouTube from the cloud without leaving a home computer on. Each slot has a flat price regardless of uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- Consider AJA HELO Plus if you specifically want dedicated hardware for scheduled prerecorded playout and have verified current product availability and requirements.
For a do-it-yourself OBS setup, budget for the computer’s power use and a dependable connection as well as any software costs; the operating burden is ongoing. Dedicated hardware adds a purchase cost. Hosted services shift playback off your machine, but plan capacity, duration limits, and billing terms still matter. Restream’s upload capacity and storage depend on the selected add-on tier, so confirm the current terms for your account.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream at their uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
