Find where the picture disappears: check the encoder’s source, the stream entering and leaving the relay, then YouTube Live Control Room. Once you identify the failing point, check the destination URL and key, video output, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate.
Find where the picture disappears
Treat the stream as three points to inspect: the encoder or source, the NGINX relay, and YouTube’s ingest and preview. A working RTMP connection is not proof that valid video is reaching YouTube. The sequence below is a diagnostic approach, not a claim that one cause explains every black screen.
- Check the source. Look at the encoder’s local preview or source monitor. Confirm it shows moving video. If it is black there, investigate the camera, screen-capture source, scene, or encoder input before changing NGINX.
- Compare the relay’s input and output. If your setup lets you inspect both, check whether the incoming stream has a picture and whether the forwarded output does too. Visible input but black output points toward relay configuration or forwarding/encoding; black input points upstream. The right inspection method depends on your deployment.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room while publishing. Review stream health and any displayed messages. A network connection alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving valid, visible video.
- Run a representative test. Include moving video and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Keep stream keys private. Do not include them in public logs, screenshots, or configuration snippets.
Verify the YouTube destination and relay path
Confirm that the relay is sending to the current YouTube ingest URL and the intended stream key, and that the NGINX RTMP application and path forward the stream you are publishing. YouTube’s ingestion API treats the ingestion type and primary or backup stream URLs as configuration details; that does not make one NGINX configuration universal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check for a stale or mistyped destination URL.
- Confirm the intended key is assigned to the stream and configured in the encoder or relay.
- If YouTube reports that the key is invalid, create a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Never share the key while asking for help.
The exact directives and test commands depend on which RTMP module, version, operating system, and configuration your server uses. NGINX’s RTMP dynamic-module documentation describes RTMP, HLS, and DASH support and NGINX Plus package installation; it is not a universal guide to every third-party RTMP module or build.
Check video output and encoder settings
Make sure the encoder is producing video
Inspect the encoder’s output, not just its connection status. Confirm the selected source or scene is visible and that video is enabled in the output being sent to the relay. If the source monitor is visible but the relay output is not, focus on the forwarding or encoding stage before changing YouTube settings.

Use a supported codec and suitable transport
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. A supported codec is a compatibility check, not a diagnosis by itself.
Set keyframes and bitrate for the actual format
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than applying one number to every stream.

| Example format | Codec | YouTube-listed bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps also listed in the current table |
Those figures apply to the stated H.264 example only. Check YouTube’s table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.
Use stream health to narrow down the fault
- Source monitor is black: troubleshoot the camera, capture source, scene, or encoder input first.
- Source is visible, relay input is black: check what the encoder is publishing and whether it is sending the intended stream.
- Relay input is visible, relay output is black: inspect the relay’s application/path and forwarding or encoding configuration for your specific module and deployment.
- Relay output is visible, YouTube is black or reports an issue: check the ingest URL, key, stream-health messages, and video compatibility settings.
- YouTube reports an invalid key: create a replacement key in Live Control Room and update the encoder without exposing the key.
YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance can change, and the exact labels or messages in Live Control Room may vary. Consult the current official pages linked below when checking a live setup.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube 24/7 rather than diagnose this NGINX relay, StreamNeo offers a separate cloud workflow:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
