SRS vs MediaMTX for Restreaming a Playlist to YouTube

SRS documents FFmpeg file ingest and looping; MediaMTX documents forwarding an available stream to YouTube. Here’s how to choose and configure the workflow.

Short answer: choose SRS when you want its documented FFmpeg ingest workflow to read a file or stream and publish it into the server; choose MediaMTX when a stream is already available and you need protocol routing or forwarding to YouTube. For a looping file, SRS’s v8 Docker guide demonstrates FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1. These are differences in documented workflows, not a benchmark proving that either server is more reliable or faster.

What each server does in this workflow

SRS: bring the file or stream into the server

SRS v6 documents ingest using FFmpeg or another tool to take file, stream, or device input, encode or pass it through, and publish it to SRS over RTMP. Its documentation lists virtual live streaming from a VOD file as a use case and describes real-time input for file ingest. The ingest configuration supports one input, so check the exact configuration and build options for the SRS version you deploy. SRS v6 ingest documentation

MediaMTX: route a stream that is already available

MediaMTX presents itself as a live media server and proxy for routing media between protocols. Its YouTube guide shows forwarding a configured path to a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS destination. This is a clearer fit when the source is already published to MediaMTX and routing or protocol conversion is the main job. MediaMTX introduction · MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide

Choose based on where the playlist enters the chain

Situation Practical fit Why
You need FFmpeg to read a file and publish it into the server SRS SRS documents FFmpeg-based ingest and its v8 Docker guide includes an infinite-loop file example.
A live stream is already on a MediaMTX path and must be sent to YouTube MediaMTX Its documentation provides a direct path-based YouTube forwarding configuration, including RTMPS.
The playlist is an HLS source and you want to loop it Test the actual source with FFmpeg first; add SRS or MediaMTX only for the role you need The SRS loop example is a single file, not a guarantee for every playlist format or set of discontinuous segments.
You need transcoding, filtering, or an unsupported protocol before forwarding Use the component that can perform that processing, then route the resulting stream MediaMTX’s guide points to FFmpeg through runOnAvailable for such tasks; this adds another process to operate.

The cited documentation establishes feature examples, not a universal winner for reliability, latency, CPU consumption, or scalability. Those depend on your playlist, codecs, server resources, network, configuration, and YouTube event.

Loop a file into SRS with FFmpeg

The SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide gives this example for repeatedly reading one file and publishing it to SRS over RTMP: SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i doc/source.flv
  -c copy -f flv rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream
  1. Replace the input file. doc/source.flv is the example file from the SRS source repository. Point -i at your own media or supported playlist input.
  2. Keep the loop and real-time input behavior. -stream_loop -1 requests an infinite loop, while -re reads input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.
  3. Decide whether stream copy is compatible. -c copy passes through the existing audio and video streams instead of re-encoding. If the codecs, container, timestamps, or YouTube requirements do not fit the path, configure a suitable encode rather than assuming copy will work.
  4. Set the SRS destination. Replace rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream with the RTMP publish address reachable from the FFmpeg process and matching your SRS configuration. The hostname is specific to the guide’s Docker setup and may not resolve in your environment.
  5. Publish onward to YouTube. Configure the chosen server and source chain to deliver to the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Do not treat a sample endpoint or key as permanent.
  6. Verify a complete stream. Confirm both video and audio reach YouTube, check that the loop restarts cleanly at the end, and monitor FFmpeg and server logs through a full cycle before relying on it for a long session.

For a playlist rather than a single file, confirm that the input format and every referenced media item are supported and accessible to FFmpeg. The cited SRS example does not demonstrate every HLS playlist, codec combination, or discontinuous segment set; do not assume they loop seamlessly.

Forward an available stream with MediaMTX

  1. Make the source available on a MediaMTX path. If the playlist is not already a live path, run an upstream reader such as FFmpeg or SRS to read and loop it, then publish the resulting stream to MediaMTX.
  2. Get the current YouTube destination details. Copy the Stream URL and stream key from the live setup in YouTube Studio. The endpoint shown in MediaMTX documentation reflects the value reported when that page was last checked, so use the current Studio values rather than hard-coding an old example.
  3. Configure forwarding on the MediaMTX path. Follow the current MediaMTX YouTube guide to set the destination URL and key for the path that carries your stream. Use RTMPS if appropriate for the current YouTube destination and your setup.
  4. Check for both audio and video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube requires both; a video-only stream may be silently rejected.
  5. Observe the whole chain. Check the source reader, MediaMTX path, forwarding logs, and YouTube’s live preview. If transcoding, filtering, or protocol handling is required, MediaMTX documents using FFmpeg through runOnAvailable; account for the extra process and its failure modes.

Playlist input is not YouTube HLS ingest

Reading an input .m3u8 playlist with FFmpeg and uploading to YouTube using its HLS ingest protocol are different workflows. YouTube’s HLS guide describes an encoder sending media playlists and media segments with HTTP PUT or POST over HTTPS. It requires muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. The guide describes segments lasting one to four seconds, says YouTube accepts Media Playlists while ignoring Master Playlists, and characterizes HLS ingest as suitable for premium quality or resolution at relatively higher latency. YouTube HLS ingest requirements

If your goal is simply to read a source playlist and send a live stream to YouTube, start with the RTMP/RTMPS forwarding workflow rather than assuming that consuming an HLS playlist satisfies YouTube’s separate HLS upload protocol.

Settings and checks that affect the result

  • Input and codecs: identify the playlist type, its referenced files or segments, and the audio/video codecs before choosing stream copy or a transcode.
  • Audio: include an audio track in the output; MediaMTX’s YouTube guide warns that YouTube requires audio as well as video.
  • Timing and looping: test end-of-file behavior, timestamps, and playlist transitions. An infinite-loop flag in a single-file example does not prove every playlist will restart without gaps or errors.
  • Destination and credentials: use the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private and update your configuration if you rotate it.
  • Version match: the cited SRS ingest page is for v6, while the loop command is from the v8 guide. Check the docs and configuration for the version actually deployed.
  • Recovery and monitoring: decide how FFmpeg and the server process restart after an exit, and monitor the stream rather than assuming a running process means YouTube is receiving it.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
YouTube does not accept the forwarded stream Missing audio or incorrect destination credentials Verify audio and video are present, then copy the current URL and key from YouTube Studio.
FFmpeg cannot open the input or the loop fails Unsupported playlist type, inaccessible referenced media, or an input assumption not covered by the single-file example Test the exact playlist and referenced segments with FFmpeg; inspect its errors and use a compatible input workflow.
The stream plays too quickly or timing is wrong Input pacing or timestamps For file ingest, compare your command with the guide’s use of -re; inspect timestamps and test a complete cycle.
The publish URL cannot be reached Container hostname, network path, port, or SRS path mismatch Check that the destination resolves from the FFmpeg environment and matches the server’s configured publish path. The guide’s host.docker.internal is not universal.
Forwarding worked before but no longer does Stale YouTube endpoint or rotated stream key Refresh the destination details in YouTube Studio and update the forwarding configuration.
A source plays in MediaMTX but YouTube rejects it Codec, container, audio, or protocol mismatch Inspect the outgoing stream against YouTube’s current ingest requirements; add FFmpeg processing only if needed.
