There is no universal SRS VPS minimum for streaming a playlist to YouTube all day. The server size depends mainly on whether FFmpeg can pass the media through unchanged or must decode and re-encode it, plus the stream’s sustained bitrate and the VPS provider’s transfer limits. SRS and FFmpeg provide the building blocks for a Docker-based relay, but the documented examples do not establish a complete, tested all-day YouTube setup or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
How the SRS-to-YouTube relay works
A typical setup sends a playlist into FFmpeg, which publishes the output to SRS; SRS then relays it to YouTube Live. SRS documents Docker deployment and an FFmpeg publishing example that loops an input with -stream_loop -1. Those examples establish the components, not a ready-made YouTube destination command or a tested promise of unattended operation. See the SRS Docker getting-started guide and the SRS project overview.
You must configure the YouTube destination and stream key separately. Keep the key private, and test the entire path—from playlist input through FFmpeg and SRS to YouTube—before relying on it.
What VPS resources do you need?
The SRS getting-started guide explains how to run the service but does not specify a minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or bandwidth plan. Treat any proposed VPS size as an estimate for a particular workload, not as an official SRS requirement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What affects sizing
- Stream copy or transcoding: If the source codecs and formats are suitable and FFmpeg can copy the streams, the workload differs substantially from decoding, scaling, or encoding. Transcoding makes CPU capacity more important; this is practical engineering guidance, not an SRS-published benchmark.
- Media and output settings: Check the playlist’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and the output bitrate you plan to send.
- Network transfer: Sustained outbound bitrate drives ongoing data transfer. Compare the expected use with the VPS plan’s transfer allowance and policies; the cited SRS and YouTube pages do not specify provider limits.
- Other server work: Account for any additional services, recording, or locally stored media. Storage needs depend on whether the server holds or records files.
- Recovery and observation: Decide how the publishing process will restart after an error and how you will detect a failed or unhealthy stream.
Use a representative test with the actual playlist and intended settings. Observe CPU and memory, verify the sustained outbound rate and provider limits, and test restart behavior before treating the VPS as ready for continuous use.
Configure YouTube’s incoming stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and supports RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Its guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio.

Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for your intended resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one value fits every stream. Verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
Preflight checks for an all-day playlist
- Prepare the YouTube destination. Set up the live stream, select the appropriate ingest settings, and configure the destination and key in your publishing workflow. Do not expose the key in public logs or code.
- Run the real playlist. Test with representative media, audio, movement, and output settings. Confirm the playlist advances and FFmpeg continues publishing to SRS.
- Check YouTube’s signal. Confirm Live Control Room receives a healthy stream before depending on it.
- Measure the server under load. Observe CPU and memory, especially if FFmpeg transcodes, and compare sustained transfer with the VPS provider’s limits.
- Test interruption recovery. Simulate or safely observe how the process restarts after an error and how the YouTube stream is restored. SRS documentation does not claim a particular all-day uptime result.
- Monitor during operation. Watch stream health and playlist progression; a process that remains running does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Common failure points and what to check
- YouTube receives no video: Check that FFmpeg is publishing to the intended SRS endpoint, the relay destination is configured correctly, and the YouTube stream key is valid and kept private.
- Stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Review the chosen codec, CBR setting, bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. Also check server load and sustained network limits.
- Playlist stops advancing: Check the media sequence and FFmpeg process output, then test the same playlist outside the live run. The SRS example’s looping option demonstrates a building block, not an all-day playlist reliability guarantee.
- Publishing stops after an error: Verify restart behavior and confirm that the relay and YouTube connection recover; add monitoring so a stopped or unhealthy feed is noticed.
- VPS runs out of capacity: Compare observed CPU, memory, and transfer use with the actual workload. If transcoding is enabled, test whether a stream-copy workflow is possible before choosing a larger server.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining FFmpeg, SRS, a VPS, and recovery checks is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
