SRS (Simple Realtime Server) is free software under the MIT license. But that does not make a 24/7 YouTube streaming server free to operate: you still need an always-on computer or cloud host, a reliable network connection, storage and a plan for monitoring and recovery. SRS can be part of that setup; it does not supply YouTube’s broadcast settings or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
What “free” means for SRS
The SRS project repository says SRS is licensed under MIT and notes that some third-party libraries have their own licenses. The software license covers SRS itself; review the notices that apply to your build and use case.
You must separately provide and operate the machine that runs your streaming pipeline. That may be a computer at home or a remote server. Either way, continuous operation depends on power, connectivity, storage and maintenance. SRS documentation covers Docker and remote-server deployment, but the cited material does not establish current hosting prices or an uptime guarantee. See the SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide.
How SRS fits into a YouTube stream
SRS is a media server with RTMP and other protocol support. Its repository documents Docker startup and FFmpeg/OBS examples. YouTube still requires its own live-stream server URL and stream key in the encoder; installing SRS alone does not create a YouTube broadcast or configure the channel for you. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-stream settings guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The SRS v8 guide demonstrates a looped FFmpeg input being sent to SRS. That documents a looping pattern, not a guarantee that a particular file, configuration, host or connection will stay live indefinitely. Test the whole route—from source through SRS to YouTube—under the conditions in which you intend to run it.
What you need to budget and maintain
A self-hosted SRS pipeline has no SRS license fee, but it has operational requirements. The sources do not give a minimum hardware specification or a price comparison between home and remote hosting, so choose capacity and hosting based on your actual media and workload rather than assuming a particular machine is sufficient.

| Deployment | What you operate | Key continuity considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Home computer or server | The machine, SRS/FFmpeg configuration, power, storage and home internet connection. | Power loss, router or ISP outages, machine restarts and unattended failures can interrupt the pipeline. |
| Remote server | The server configuration, media and streaming pipeline; the hosting provider supplies the remote compute environment. | Check the provider’s actual terms and plan how you will detect and recover from a failed process or connection. No provider, price or service level is established by the cited SRS material. |
In either case, budget for whatever compute, network, storage and operational support your setup requires. A low-cost machine is not, by itself, a 24/7 reliability plan.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete recording matters, arrange a local recording as a backup and consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions. Check the current behavior in Live Control Room before publishing because platform interfaces and behavior can change. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Protect the stream key and test recovery
YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets an encoder send a feed; treat it like a password. Keep it out of public configuration, shared screenshots and logs. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s live settings. Where your encoder supports it, YouTube also supports RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection over TLS/SSL. Use the endpoint shown in Live Control Room. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings and RTMPS instructions.
- Test the encoder setup and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.
- Monitor audio and video quality while the broadcast is running.
- If you need an archive, verify that the local recording file is growing.
- Test backup-encoder failover rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
YouTube recommends these kinds of checks in its live-streaming tips. They are operational safeguards, not an uptime promise from SRS, YouTube or a hosting provider.
