How to Set Up NGINX RTMP for a 24/7 Bhajan YouTube Channel

A practical guide to relaying a continuous bhajan feed through NGINX RTMP to YouTube, including stream keys, RTMPS, monitoring, recovery, and common faults.

To run a bhajan channel continuously with NGINX RTMP, send a continuous media feed from an encoder or FFmpeg process to an NGINX RTMP application, then configure NGINX to relay that feed to the YouTube ingestion address for your stream. NGINX is the relay—not the source of the music and not an uptime guarantee. Your source, server, network, process supervision, and recovery plan all need to keep working.

How the 24/7 stream fits together

A typical setup has three parts: a bhajan playlist or live encoder supplies audio and video; NGINX RTMP receives or relays that feed; YouTube ingests it and presents it through a live broadcast. Depending on your design, FFmpeg can read and encode the media before publishing, or NGINX can invoke FFmpeg as part of its workflow. The NGINX RTMP module documents live RTMP, push and pull relaying, FFmpeg integration, and status output.

NGINX does not create a playlist, supply music, or ensure uninterrupted operation by itself. A continuous service also needs a source that does not run out, a stable host and network, process monitoring, and a way to restart or alert an operator when something stops.

Understand YouTube streams and broadcasts

YouTube separates the incoming feed from the viewer-facing event. A liveStream holds ingestion and transmission settings; a liveBroadcast is the event or video viewers see. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes the stream resource, and its broadcast documentation explains the related broadcast resource. A stream can be bound to a broadcast, and the API guide describes a 24/7 feed continuing while another broadcast is created.

For a Studio-based setup, create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio and use the ingestion details YouTube provides. For an API-based setup, the liveStreams.insert reference lists title, ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate among the required fields; Live Streaming API methods require OAuth 2.0 authorization. Do not expose the stream key in public files, screenshots, repositories, or logs you share.

Use the primary or backup ingestion address supplied for your selected stream. YouTube notes that an encoder may need the stream URL and stream name joined in the format it expects. Do not assume that one hard-coded address or key applies to every channel or stream.

Choose the NGINX RTMP installation that matches your server

There are two distinct options that should not be confused: the community arut/nginx-rtmp-module and the separately packaged dynamic RTMP module for NGINX Plus. The community project documents building with NGINX source and the --add-module option. F5’s NGINX Plus RTMP module guide covers its dynamic module, which must be loaded, tested, and reloaded in the NGINX Plus configuration.

Installation commands vary with the operating system and exact NGINX build. Check module compatibility against your distribution and NGINX version before using build instructions; a module compiled for a different build may not load. This guide avoids prescribing package commands that could be wrong for your host.

Configure the feed and relay

1. Decide where the playlist is read and encoded

Choose whether a separate encoder or FFmpeg process publishes to NGINX, or whether the NGINX RTMP module invokes FFmpeg as part of the workflow. In either design, ensure the process can keep producing the intended bhajan feed. A relay can forward a feed, but it cannot replace a missing media source.

2. Add an RTMP application and YouTube destination

Configure an RTMP application in NGINX for the incoming feed and the relay action to YouTube. The module README provides application-block and push/pull examples; adapt them to the ingestion address and stream name YouTube gives your stream. Treat examples as configuration starting points, not a complete production deployment. Keep credentials private and restrict access to any local publishing endpoint.

3. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder and configuration support it

Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over SSL/TLS. Its RTMPS ingestion guide specifies an RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and a TLS handshake that supplies the server hostname through SNI. Use the valid endpoint and application path supplied for the stream, and ensure your client supports the required TLS and SNI behavior. Wrong endpoints or ports, or missing SNI, can cause TLS connection errors.

4. Start the source and verify YouTube receives it

Start the playlist or encoder, then the NGINX relay if your arrangement requires it. Check YouTube’s stream status rather than relying only on an NGINX process being active. The Life of a Broadcast guide identifies an active stream as one for which YouTube is receiving data. Confirm the broadcast is bound to the intended stream before going live.

Plan for continuity, copyright, and archiving

Build recovery around every dependency

Document how the source, encoder, and relay restart after a failure, and how someone is alerted if they do not recover. Monitor the feed at YouTube as well as the server and relay logs: an NGINX process can be running while its source, network path, or YouTube ingest is not healthy. The cited API documentation describes stream status and resource behavior; it does not guarantee uptime for a particular configuration.

Use music and recordings you are entitled to stream

“Bhajan” or “traditional” does not by itself establish that a particular composition, arrangement, recording, image, or playlist is free to rebroadcast. Check the rights for the specific material and recording you plan to use. YouTube’s content and channel policies may also affect a stream; confirm current requirements in YouTube Studio and the applicable YouTube policy pages before relying on monetization or continuous availability.

Do not assume a 24/7 feed will be archived indefinitely

YouTube’s API guide demonstrates a 24/7 feed use case, but that alone does not establish current limits for stream duration, interruptions, archiving, or channel eligibility. Check the current YouTube Help Center guidance for your channel and stream rather than promising viewers a permanent recording.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely checks What to do
YouTube shows no incoming data or the stream is inactive Source process, NGINX relay logs, network path, ingest address, stream name/key, and codec or format compatibility. Verify that the source is publishing, that NGINX is relaying to the selected stream’s supplied destination, and that YouTube’s status changes to receiving data.
RTMPS connection or certificate error RTMPS protocol, correct endpoint and application path, port 443, and TLS SNI hostname. Use YouTube’s supplied RTMPS destination and a client/configuration that performs TLS with the correct SNI hostname.
NGINX refuses to start after adding the module Module compatibility with the installed NGINX build; whether the module was built or packaged for that version; dynamic module load configuration if using NGINX Plus. Check the exact build and module installation instructions, test the configuration before reloading, and resolve load errors before restarting the relay.
The process is running but viewers do not receive a healthy feed Whether the source is still producing media, the relay destination and credentials, network connectivity, and YouTube stream health. Trace the feed from source through NGINX to YouTube; process status alone does not prove successful delivery.
The stream stops after a host, network, or source interruption Whether the source and relay restart automatically, whether the feed resumes, and whether an operator is notified. Set up and verify recovery for each process and document a manual restart path. A configuration alone does not establish continuous uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain an encoder and relay server, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video—not a camera feed—and supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
