How to Use a systemd Service to Run MediaMTX for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

A practical Linux guide to running MediaMTX at boot and forwarding a source to YouTube over RTMPS, including service verification and reliability limits.

To run MediaMTX at boot and forward a source to YouTube, install the binary and configuration in stable locations, create and enable a systemd unit, then add YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key to the MediaMTX path that receives your source. The basic unit starts MediaMTX with the system; it does not, by itself, restart a crashed process or guarantee uninterrupted delivery through network or YouTube outages.

What this setup does—and what it does not

MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy that can forward an incoming stream to another server. A systemd service can start it during Linux boot and order startup after the network is considered online. You still need a source that publishes to the configured MediaMTX path, and YouTube must receive both audio and video.

The procedure below follows MediaMTX’s Linux systemd instructions, which cover most Linux distributions, including Ubuntu and Debian. The instructions explicitly do not apply to OpenWrt’s service management. Check your distribution’s conventions and the configuration syntax for your installed MediaMTX version. MediaMTX’s configuration reference currently identifies itself as v1.21.1; that marker can change. MediaMTX introduction · configuration reference

Install MediaMTX in stable locations

The documented layout uses these paths:

  • Executable: /usr/local/bin/mediamtx
  • Configuration: /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml
  • systemd unit: /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service

Install or move the MediaMTX executable and YAML configuration to the first two paths, or choose different paths and use them consistently in the unit. Ensure the service account can read the executable and configuration and any files its configuration references. The exact installation commands depend on how you obtained MediaMTX and your distribution; use the project’s instructions for the matching release rather than assuming a package manager or archive layout.

Configure forwarding to YouTube over RTMPS

Get the current ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
  2. Use the lock icon to retrieve the RTMPS stream URL, then copy the stream key from the same control room. Use the current values shown for your account or stream; do not rely on a host copied from an old example. YouTube’s instructions describe RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and advise that both the protocol and server use rtmps. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

Add a forward destination to the receiving path

In /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml, configure the path that corresponds to where your source publishes. The structure is:

paths:
  mypath:
    forward:
      - dest: rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL#STREAM_KEY

Replace mypath with the actual MediaMTX path and replace the URL and key with the current values from Live Control Room. The # joins the destination URL and key in MediaMTX’s forwarding configuration. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it in screenshots, public repositories, or logs. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide includes an example host, but presents it as the value reported when that documentation was updated and tells users to check YouTube for the current URL. Do not copy its certificate fingerprint as a permanent value; verify certificate details for the endpoint if your configuration uses them. MediaMTX: Forward streams

Make sure the outgoing stream includes audio and video

YouTube requires both tracks. MediaMTX warns that video-only streams are silently rejected. If the content is intended to be silent, the stream must still carry an audio track. Confirm that the source feeding the configured path supplies both tracks before diagnosing a forwarding failure as a systemd problem.

Create the systemd unit

Create /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service with the following baseline. If you installed the executable or configuration elsewhere, change ExecStart to match those exact paths.

[Unit]
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/mediamtx /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Wants pulls in the network-online target, and After orders MediaMTX after that target. These directives do not themselves make the network stack wait until connectivity is usable: enable the appropriate wait-online service for your network manager if needed. MediaMTX’s Linux instructions suggest systemd-networkd-wait-online.service, but that unit is not present on every system; verify the correct implementation for the host rather than assuming its name.

Reload systemd, enable the service, and start it

  1. After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable MediaMTX to start at boot: sudo systemctl enable mediamtx.
  3. Start it now: sudo systemctl start mediamtx.
  4. Check its state with systemctl status mediamtx. Review service output with journalctl -u mediamtx; the MediaMTX configuration reference lists stdout as the default log destination. Journal behavior and available log history depend on the system’s systemd configuration.

To verify boot behavior, reboot the host and check that the service is enabled and active, that MediaMTX loaded the intended configuration, and that the source publishes to the intended path. Then verify that YouTube receives audio and video. A running service alone does not establish that the source or YouTube forward is working.

Understand the 24/7 reliability gap

The documented sample unit does not contain a Restart= directive. Enabling a service means systemd starts it at boot; it does not mean systemd will restart MediaMTX after a process crash. Nor does the sample define health monitoring or a YouTube reconnection policy. Treat those as separate operational requirements, and test any restart policy or monitoring design on the target system. The cited setup does not establish end-to-end continuous operation or an uptime guarantee. MediaMTX: Start on boot

Troubleshooting

MediaMTX does not start

  • Check the unit and file paths. Confirm that the executable exists at the path in ExecStart and that the YAML file is at the configured location and readable by the service.
  • Check the logs. Inspect systemctl status mediamtx and journalctl -u mediamtx for a configuration parsing error, missing file, or permission problem.
  • Reload after editing the unit. Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after changing the service file, then restart the service.

The service starts, but YouTube receives no stream

  • Confirm the source path. The configured paths entry must be the path the source actually publishes to.
  • Recheck the current RTMPS URL and key. Retrieve both from Live Control Room and ensure the destination uses the current URL, rtmps protocol, and correct key. Avoid exposing the key while checking it.
  • Check both tracks. YouTube requires audio as well as video; a video-only forward can be silently rejected.
  • Check network readiness. If MediaMTX starts before connectivity is usable, configure the wait-online service for the host’s network manager and verify its behavior.

MediaMTX stops after a crash or an outage

The baseline unit has no restart policy, and the forwarding example does not establish an end-to-end recovery policy. Determine whether the process exited, whether the network recovered, and whether YouTube accepted the renewed connection by inspecting service logs and the live status. Add and test the recovery and monitoring behavior required by your deployment instead of treating boot enablement as a resilience feature.
