To send a MediaMTX stream to YouTube Live, configure outbound forwarding for the MediaMTX path carrying your video and point it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest destination using the current stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. This is separate from MediaMTX’s inbound RTMP listener settings: rtmpAddress and rtmpsAddress control where clients publish into MediaMTX; they do not configure forwarding from MediaMTX to YouTube.
How MediaMTX connects to YouTube
The stream has two links: an encoder or other publisher sends video into a MediaMTX path, and MediaMTX forwards that path to YouTube. You can publish into MediaMTX with a client such as FFmpeg or OBS, then configure forwarding for the relevant path. The forwarding setup sends the stream onward; it should not be treated as a transcoder that makes an incompatible source suitable for YouTube.
MediaMTX documents this YouTube destination format: rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey. Replace streamKey with the current key for your channel or live event. Do not share the key: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to that YouTube stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP. Configure outbound forwarding in MediaMTX
- Find the source path. Identify the MediaMTX path receiving the stream from your encoder. Confirm that the publisher is sending to the intended MediaMTX server and path before troubleshooting YouTube forwarding.
- Get the current YouTube destination details. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel or event and use its current stream key. Use the documented destination pattern
rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey; substitute your private key for the placeholder. - Configure forwarding for that path. Edit
mediamtx.ymlaccording to the forwarding example for your installed MediaMTX release. The path configuration must identify the outbound YouTube destination. Keep the key private, and do not mistake listener or server-certificate settings for the forwarding destination. - Validate and apply the configuration. MediaMTX documents configuration validation, file-based configuration, environment-variable overrides, the Control API, and hot reloading in supported situations. Check the syntax against the documentation for your installed release before applying changes; the online reference follows the latest release.
- Start the source and inspect YouTube’s stream health. Publish representative video and audio into the MediaMTX path, then check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream-health messages. Test before an important event rather than assuming a successful MediaMTX connection guarantees a healthy YouTube stream.
MediaMTX’s configuration reference lists rtmp, rtmpEncryption, rtmpAddress, rtmpsAddress, rtmpServerKey, and rtmpServerCert as server-side RTMP options. These relate to the MediaMTX server and its inbound listeners or certificates; they are not substitutes for configuring an outbound YouTube destination. See the configuration reference and configuration guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the source encoder against YouTube’s requirements
Forwarding does not establish that the source stream’s codec, bitrate, timing, or audio format meets YouTube’s requirements. Check the encoder settings for the actual source feeding MediaMTX. YouTube’s current Help Center guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio; AAC is required for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS. Consult YouTube’s full, current table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you plan to use.
| H.264 video mode | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended figures in its encoder guidance accessed in 2026, not guarantees of picture quality. Choose a video mode first, then use the corresponding recommendation and ensure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Troubleshoot a stream that does not reach YouTube
- YouTube receives no video. Check whether the encoder is publishing to the expected MediaMTX server and path. Confirm the source is arriving there before changing the YouTube destination.
- The source reaches MediaMTX, but forwarding fails. Check that the path’s outbound destination follows the documented RTMPS format and that the key is the current one from the correct YouTube Live Control Room channel or event. Revalidate the configuration using the tools and syntax for your installed MediaMTX release.
- YouTube connects but reports poor stream health. Check the source codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Confirm that the upload connection has enough sustained capacity for the selected bitrate.
- Listener changes do not fix forwarding. Recheck which part of the chain is failing. Inbound listener settings govern publishing into MediaMTX; the path’s outbound forwarding destination governs sending that stream to YouTube.
- The configuration example does not validate. Compare it with documentation for the installed MediaMTX version. The online configuration reference tracks the latest release, so syntax may differ from an older installation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7 rather than operate a MediaMTX forwarding setup, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that use case: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Try StreamNeo by starting your free first day.
