To keep an Nginx RTMP stream running after a crash or reboot, use systemd to supervise the process that actually publishes or relays the stream, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. That process might be Nginx itself, an FFmpeg child launched by Nginx, or a separate FFmpeg publisher. The right unit and restart policy depend on which process owns the connection to YouTube. A systemd service showing “active” does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
First identify which process sends the stream to YouTube
Systemd supervises Linux processes; Nginx RTMP configuration defines how media is received and relayed. Before editing a unit, map the path from your encoder to YouTube: determine whether Nginx makes the outbound connection, whether Nginx launches FFmpeg with its exec feature, or whether an independent FFmpeg process publishes directly. The Nginx RTMP project documents the exec feature, but that does not mean every installation uses FFmpeg or that Nginx’s service unit supervises an FFmpeg child like a dedicated FFmpeg service would. Nginx RTMP module project documentation
- Nginx owns publishing: keep the RTMP push configuration in Nginx and manage Nginx through the service unit supplied by your Linux distribution.
- Nginx launches FFmpeg: establish how that child is started, stopped, and cleaned up when Nginx reloads or exits. Do not add a separate unit for the same publisher until you have deliberately changed process ownership.
- A separate publisher sends to YouTube: a dedicated systemd unit can make its executable, user, restart policy, logs, and boot activation explicit.
These are alternative arrangements, not a universal ranking. Choose one owner for each publishing process so that a restart or shutdown does not leave duplicate publishers, orphaned children, or competing connections.

In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event and configure the publishing side to use them. Treat the key as a secret: avoid putting it in public configuration examples or logs, and rotate it if it is exposed. Check protocol compatibility before choosing RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and directs creators to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. However, YouTube supporting RTMPS does not mean your installed Nginx RTMP build can publish to it. Verify the exact module/build and its configuration support before switching protocols. If YouTube reports a relevant SSL error, its troubleshooting guidance says to verify the RTMPS server URL and mentions trying port 443 explicitly. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · NGINX documentation
Validate before applying changes
After editing the RTMP configuration, run nginx -t to test the configuration. If it passes, apply the change with nginx -s reload where appropriate, or use the service-management mechanism supported by your distribution. NGINX’s module guidance covers configuration testing and reloading; module installation and loading vary by operating system and NGINX edition. NGINX documentation

Choose the correct systemd unit
When Nginx is the managed process
Use the Nginx service unit installed by your operating system rather than creating a second unit that starts another Nginx instance. Service names and package conventions differ, so check the unit name on your host. Inspect its state with systemctl status nginx if the service is named nginx; substitute the actual name when it is not. A restart policy on the Nginx unit can recover from an Nginx process failure, but it does not validate the RTMP destination or prove that a child publisher has recovered.
When an independent FFmpeg process publishes
A dedicated service unit is often clearer when FFmpeg itself is the long-running publisher. The following is an illustrative fragment, not a tested, drop-in configuration. Adapt the executable, arguments, paths, account, and unit name to your distribution and deployment. Keep the stream key out of broadly readable files and command output; use an appropriately protected configuration or credential mechanism for your environment.

The ellipsis is not a usable FFmpeg command: supply the correct input, encoding or stream-copy options, and YouTube destination for your setup. The sources cited here do not establish universal bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, or retry-delay values for every encoder and relay build. Likewise, network-online.target ordering is not proof that DNS, routing, credentials, or YouTube’s ingest endpoint will remain available.
Restart=on-failure is a common starting point for a long-running service; systemd’s retrieved NEWS recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal for such services. Check the documentation for your installed systemd version and the process’s exit behavior before choosing. A restart policy does not fix an invalid command, bad key, or broken media pipeline. systemd NEWS

Enable, start, and verify the service
Enabling a unit for boot and starting it now are separate actions. Enabling arranges activation through configured boot or dependency targets; starting launches the service in the current session. systemctl documentation
- Test Nginx configuration: run
nginx -t. Resolve any reported errors before proceeding. - Apply Nginx changes: use
nginx -s reloador your distribution’s supported service mechanism after a successful test. - Enable the chosen unit at boot if wanted: run
sudo systemctl enable UNIT, replacingUNITwith the actual unit name. - Start it now: run
sudo systemctl start UNIT. If it is already running and you intentionally need to restart it, usesudo systemctl restart UNIT. - Inspect service state: run
systemctl status UNIT. A running state describes the process, not the health of the YouTube stream. - Read its journal: run
journalctl -u UNIT; add--since "10 minutes ago"to narrow the view when diagnosing a recent incident. journalctl documentation - Verify the actual ingest: look for the expected stream in YouTube Live Control Room’s preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live when ready.
Understand what restart recovery does—and does not—guarantee
Systemd can restart a process when its exit result matches the unit’s configured policy. It cannot, by itself, tell whether a process that remains alive is stuck or sending invalid media. That requires an appropriate watchdog or separate health check; the cited documentation does not establish one universal watchdog setup for Nginx RTMP.

Recovery also has distinct layers: the Linux process can restart, the publisher can reconnect to YouTube, YouTube can accept the ingest, and the same scheduled/live event can continue. Success at one layer does not guarantee the next. YouTube’s published encoder guidance describes configuring the URL and key, the scheduled-stream preview/Go live flow, and stopping transmission; it does not establish a continuity guarantee after a disconnect. Test the behavior with your account, event, encoder, and current YouTube interface. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; systemd does not turn a single YouTube event into an unlimited live event. YouTube encoder help
Troubleshoot by locating the failed layer
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nginx will not start or reload | Nginx configuration, module loading, or service setup | Run nginx -t, correct the reported issue, then review systemctl status UNIT and journalctl -u UNIT. Check your distribution’s module and service conventions. |
| The service is inactive after a crash | Unit restart policy or process exit behavior | Inspect the status and journal for the exit reason. Confirm that the relevant process—not merely a wrapper or unrelated service—is managed by the unit, then review the restart policy for the installed systemd version. |
| The service is active but YouTube has no preview | Publisher output, stream URL/key, protocol, media, or network path | Check publisher and Nginx logs, confirm the current URL and key in Live Control Room, and verify RTMP versus RTMPS support in the installed build. Use the preview as the end-to-end check. |
| YouTube reports an SSL or RTMPS connection error | Protocol, server URL, port, or build capability | Confirm that the destination is the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and that the installed Nginx RTMP build supports the required configuration. YouTube mentions trying port 443 explicitly for relevant SSL errors. |
| FFmpeg exits but Nginx remains up | Ownership of an Nginx-launched child or separate publisher | Find out how FFmpeg was launched and who owns its lifecycle. Avoid adding a competing unit for the same publisher; decide whether Nginx or a dedicated unit should start and stop it. |
| Publisher reconnects but the event does not resume as expected | YouTube event state and reconnect behavior | Check Live Control Room and the event’s current state. Reproduce the recovery path safely during a maintenance window; do not assume a process restart preserves the same live event. |
| Stream stops while the service still appears healthy | Stuck process, invalid media, or a failure not reflected as process exit | Compare logs with the YouTube preview and add a suitable health-check or watchdog design only after defining what a healthy stream means for this deployment. |
Test recovery before relying on unattended operation
During a maintenance window, verify both boot behavior and failure recovery. Confirm the unit is enabled if it should start at boot, deliberately test a recoverable process failure, inspect the journal and service state, and confirm that YouTube receives the expected stream again. This validates your particular process topology and event behavior; it is not a guarantee for future network, ingest, or account failures.
