Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog lists a fix for a crash in Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance, in an update dated October 2, 2026. The entry confirms a crash fix, but does not identify its cause, affected hardware or configurations, or whether the game now works reliably for every player.
What the Proton update fixes
Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog states: “Fixed a crash in Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance”. The entry appears in the update available as of October 2, 2026.
That is the extent of the specific information about this fix: Valve does not describe the crash’s root cause or say which hardware, Linux distribution, SteamOS version, graphics driver, or game configuration was affected. The changelog also provides no success rate or post-update test results, so it should not be read as a guarantee that the game will run without crashes for everyone.
How to get the Proton Experimental update
Proton Experimental is a compatibility layer used to run Windows games on SteamOS and Linux. It is also a testing ground for changes that may later appear in numbered stable Proton releases. It is software, not a hardware upgrade. Learn more on Valve’s Proton project page.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Steam Deck HQ reported on October 3, 2026, that players who already have Proton Experimental should receive its update automatically. For Steam Deck users who do not have it, the outlet says to search for Proton Experimental in the Steam store. These are the outlet’s directions, not additional instructions in Valve’s changelog. See Steam Deck HQ’s report.
Is the fix for Steam Deck?
The changelog names the game crash but does not limit the fix to Steam Deck or specify a hardware class. Because Proton Experimental is used for Windows games on SteamOS and Linux, the update is relevant to players using that compatibility layer; the available notes do not establish that it fixes the issue on every Steam Deck or Linux setup.

How this differs from the game’s September patch
Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance also received game update v1.9.1221 on September 25, 2026. Its notes mention crashes when the game could not access the “My Documents” folder and prevention of crashes caused by conflicts between current game resources and mods. Those are game-side changes, separate from Valve’s later Proton changelog entry. The published notes do not establish that the Proton crash and either game-side issue had the same cause. The game update details are available in the Steam announcement.
