They work differently, have separate eligibility rules, and are not available on every channel or video.
How Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships differ

Super Chat and Super Stickers are separate purchases tied to an interaction in live chat. Memberships are a continuing subscription for perks. Neither pattern is universally better: choose based on what fits your content and audience. YouTube describes these as some of its monetization options; its overview also lists ad revenue, Shopping, YouTube Premium revenue, and Super Thanks, each with its own requirements. What creators need before enabling fan funding
YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies set baseline requirements for these features. The channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), the creator must be at least 18, and the feature must be available in the creator’s location. The creator must also accept the applicable Commerce Product Module, or have accepted the earlier Commerce Product Addendum where applicable, and follow the relevant terms and policies. Access to YPP does not by itself guarantee access to every feature: check the individual feature’s criteria and current status in YouTube Studio.
YouTube’s monetization overview, accessed in October 2026, lists an expanded YPP tier at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualifying public watch hours on long-form videos in the past 365 days or 3 million qualifying public Shorts views in the past 90 days. The page associates that tier with memberships, Supers, Super Thanks, and Shopping, subject to each feature’s own criteria. It separately lists a 1,000-subscriber tier with either 4,000 qualifying public watch hours in 365 days or 10 million qualifying public Shorts views in 90 days, alongside additional monetization features. These are YPP program thresholds, not a guarantee that a particular feature is enabled on your channel. Confirm the current requirements on YouTube’s monetization overview and in Studio; requirements and availability can change.

How do I turn on Super Chat or Super Stickers?
- Check the channel’s current access. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and look for the Supers feature card. YouTube says Supers appear there for creators who have access. Review any displayed eligibility or setup steps.
- Confirm the required terms and account conditions. Make sure the channel is in YPP, the creator is at least 18, the feature is supported in the creator’s location, and the applicable Commerce Product Module or prior Addendum has been accepted.
- Turn on the feature in Studio. Follow the controls shown on the feature card. YouTube’s policies require creators to turn on each feature; labels and available controls may vary with account access.
- Check the individual stream before it starts. Confirm it is eligible for Supers and that live chat is available. A channel-level feature being enabled does not make every video eligible.

How do YouTube channel memberships work?
Viewers pay a recurring monthly amount in exchange for perks the creator offers to members. YouTube gives badges and emoji as examples; the actual perks are channel-specific. This differs from Supers, which are individual purchases associated with a particular live-chat moment. YouTube’s policies describe the membership payment model but do not establish every available price level or every channel’s complete eligibility in the material cited here. Review the membership feature’s current criteria in Studio and on YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies.

Why is Super Chat unavailable on my live stream?
YouTube lists several video-level restrictions. Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable when a stream or Premiere is age-restricted, unlisted, private, Made for Kids, or a YouTube Giving fundraiser. They are also unavailable if live chat or comments are turned off. Feature availability is geographically limited as well.
- Check the video’s visibility and audience settings. Verify it is not private or unlisted, age-restricted, or set as Made for Kids.
- Check the stream format. Confirm it is not a YouTube Giving fundraiser.
- Check chat settings. Live chat or comments being off blocks Supers under YouTube’s current help page.
- Check account access and location. Revisit the Earn section and the current feature-specific availability information; location lists and feature rules can change.
If all those checks look right, compare the channel’s Studio status with YouTube’s current eligibility and availability guidance.

What viewers and creators should know about paid support
- Supers are not donations or crowdfunding. YouTube explicitly says, “Super Chat and Super Stickers aren’t crowdfunding or donation tools.” Do not present a purchase as a donation or promise a particular tax treatment; users must comply with applicable laws.
- Creator revenue shares are not stated here. The cited official material does not establish a current percentage for what creators receive from Supers or memberships, so do not assume a split.
- There is no single feature for every audience. Think about whether viewers are more likely to value a highlighted live message, an animated chat image, or recurring members-only perks. YouTube’s live guidance recommends choosing revenue sources that fit the audience and content.
YouTube also says that if it removes a violating Super, its portion of the revenue is donated to charity. That policy does not change the general distinction between a Super purchase and a donation.
