If you want a medieval RPG that feels unlike a standard fantasy quest, start with Darklands: this 1992 DOS role-playing game sets a party of adventurers in a supernatural version of fifteenth-century Germany. It is one strong, distinctive pick—not an objectively “perfect” game or proof that nobody remembers it. The games below offer different routes into older medieval and medieval-fantasy RPGs, from historically flavored folklore to Forgotten Realms high fantasy and the cult appeal of Gothic II.
Darklands: medieval Germany, folklore, and alchemy
Released for DOS in 1992 by MPS Labs, Darklands builds its fantasy around a specific place and period rather than an invented kingdom. Ziggurat Interactive describes a party of four adventurers traveling through a fantasy version of fifteenth-century Germany, where mythical creatures and religious beliefs belong to the world. The publisher calls it “Heroic Adventures in Medieval Germany,” a phrase that captures the historical-fantasy mix but is promotional copy, not an independent verdict. Ziggurat Interactive’s game page gives the publisher’s overview.
The historical texture is more than a backdrop. A Game Developer retrospective highlights the attention to arms and armor, the map of German cities, open-ended goals, and alchemical magic. The result is a setting shaped by geography, travel, saints, folklore, and beliefs as well as by familiar fantasy dangers. It is a useful choice if “medieval RPG” means something more grounded in regional history than castles and generic high-fantasy kingdoms. Game Developer’s retrospective also records release-era frustrations, including bugs and an irritating save system; those historical criticisms do not establish whether every issue persists in current versions.
How its systems work
- Party travel: You guide four adventurers across a world containing more than 90 cities, according to Ziggurat’s product description.
- Skill growth without standard classes: Attributes and skills improve over time rather than through an artificial class-and-level structure.
- Alchemy: The game uses alchemical formulas as part of its approach to magic.
- Pausable real-time combat: Combat unfolds in real time, but you can pause to issue orders.
The official publisher page links to storefronts, but a link there is not a guarantee that a particular edition is available in every region or compatible with every modern setup. Check the store listing for your region, platform, edition, and compatibility before buying.

Forgotten Realms classics: a different kind of medieval fantasy
If you would rather explore conventional high fantasy than a historical-folklore setting, older Forgotten Realms RPGs offer a broad discovery lane. In 2015, PC Gamer reported that GOG had recovered thirteen Forgotten Realms games and worked to get them running on modern systems. The titles named in the article include Pool of Radiance; its sequels Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness; Hillsfar; Unlimited Adventures; the Eye of the Beholder trilogy; Dungeon Hack; two Savage Frontier games; and Menzoberranzan. PC Gamer’s 2015 report is a useful record of that recovery, not a guarantee of current listing or compatibility. Check present store pages before choosing a game.
This is not one uniform style of RPG: the collection spans different formats and adventures within the Forgotten Realms setting. The supplied coverage establishes the titles and the recovery effort, but not a complete, current comparison of their perspectives, combat systems, or platform support. Treat them as a set to investigate rather than assume they all play like Darklands.

Gothic II Complete Classic: a cult-fantasy comparison with console access
Gothic II is a useful contrast if you are looking for cult fantasy rather than a historically grounded setting. THQ Nordic says Gothic II Complete Classic includes the base game and the Night of the Raven add-on. Its product description advertises more than 100 missions, over 500 NPCs with dialogue and daily routines, branching choices, and more than 200 weapons and spells. These are publisher feature counts, not an independent measure of quality. THQ Nordic’s official page lists the edition details; its news section reports that the console edition became available on September 29, 2026. Confirm the platform and regional store listing relevant to you.

For a broader explanation of why older role-playing games can slip out of the conversation—because of flaws, dated presentation, or arriving alongside a blockbuster—PC Gamer’s overlooked-RPG feature offers useful context. It also discusses Risen (2009), an exploration RPG set on a hostile island with faction choice. That is a broader RPG recommendation, not evidence that Risen belongs to a narrowly defined medieval-games list.
