For most players, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is the best place to start: it combines collecting and training Digimon with turn-based battles and a hacker-themed story. But there is no single Digimon formula. The Digimon World games focus more on caring for partner Digimon, while Survive puts its branching narrative first. This ranking weighs how distinctive and satisfying each game’s central loop is, its story, the clarity of its collection and evolution systems, newcomer accessibility, and platform availability. It is an editorial guide, not a settled franchise consensus.

How the ranking works

The games below are ranked as recommendations, not as entries in a shared genre competition. A team-building RPG and a partner-raising adventure reward different tastes, so the order favors games with a clear identity and a compelling reason to play while accounting for story, progression, approachability, and practical availability. The available evidence supports those differences, not a definitive numerical order.

In broad terms, Digimon Story entries emphasize collecting, training, and turn-based team battles; Digimon World entries emphasize the routines and needs of individual partners. Survive is the narrative-led alternative.

The best Digimon games, ranked

1. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Cyber Sleuth is the strongest all-round recommendation for players who want a conventional RPG structure built around Digimon. Its hacker-story premise gives the adventure a clear frame, while scanning, raising, and training Digimon feed into turn-based battles. Bandai Namco’s official game page describes that core loop.

Producer Kazumasa Habu said the team focused on collecting and training a varied group of Digimon, and on making the trained creatures visible in turn-based battles. He described the development goal as ensuring “the same amount of Digimon to train as the first Digimon Story game released on Nintendo DS.” That makes the game a natural fit for players who want roster-building and team experimentation rather than the day-to-day care routines of a partner-raising game.

Best for: newcomers seeking a modern entry point, and RPG fans who enjoy collecting, training, and tactical turn-based encounters.

2. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory

Hacker’s Memory is the companion story to Cyber Sleuth, set in the same world. Bandai Namco describes it as a parallel narrative and official backstory. Habu put the relationship simply in a 2019 interview: “The story of Cyber Sleuth ends at Hacker’s Memory.” It is therefore a particularly good choice for players who have finished Cyber Sleuth and want more of that setting; as a first stop, its connection to the earlier game makes it less straightforward.

The two games are also sold together in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition. Bandai Namco’s official Complete Edition page offers retailer selection. Its Hacker’s Memory page includes platform filters and physical and digital edition options; check the retailer and platform details for the version you want, since those options do not establish current stock or a physical release on every platform.

Bandai Digimon Card Game: Adventure Box 2-4 Packs, Promos
  • Grab your Digimon Card Game Adventure Box 2 today! Each box contains 4 booster packs, 1 promotion card and 1 Digimon Figure. Content may vary.

Best for: players who want to continue the Cyber Sleuth story and return to its team-building RPG loop.

3. Digimon Survive

Survive is the pick for readers who put an emotional, branching story ahead of a traditional collection-focused RPG. Bandai Namco recommends it to players looking for that kind of narrative experience. Treat that as the publisher’s positioning rather than an independent verdict: its central appeal differs from the collecting-and-battling focus of Cyber Sleuth.

Digimon CCG Starter Deck - Digimon Data Squad (ST-24) - 54 Cards
  • Deck Contents: 1 pre-constructed deck of 54 cards A total of 21 card types: 5 Common, 5 Uncommon, 3 Rare, 2 Super Rare, and 6 Promo cards.

Best for: story-first players who want choices and branching narrative to shape the experience.

4. Digimon World: Next Order

Next Order shifts attention from assembling a battle-ready roster to looking after partner Digimon. Their needs, routines, training, and behavior are central, alongside exploration and town-building. That gives the game a different pace from Cyber Sleuth: the appeal is in managing partners and developing a world around them, not simply collecting creatures for a turn-based team.

Which Digimon game should you play first?

  • You want a well-rounded RPG: Start with Cyber Sleuth for its hacker premise, collection, training, and turn-based battles.
  • You have finished Cyber Sleuth and want the companion story: Choose Hacker’s Memory, the parallel narrative and backstory in the same setting.
  • You care most about an emotional, branching narrative: Consider Survive; that is the experience Bandai Namco recommends it for.
  • You want to care for partners and shape a town: Pick Next Order for its raising routines, exploration, and town-building.

One publication’s current ranking offers a different ordering: GamesRadar+ lists Next Order at number 10 and Hacker’s Memory at number 3, while also highlighting Cyber Sleuth among the notable modern entries. That is one outlet’s editorial view, not a measure of fan consensus.
