How do I fix FFmpeg reconnect errors?
Find the first failure in the log, identify which URL failed, and match the recovery method to that connection. An HTTP input, YouTube ingest output, and FFmpeg process exit are different failure layers; a retry option for one does not repair the others.
- Capture the failure. Save the full command with stream keys and other secrets redacted, FFmpeg version and build information, the complete log around the first error, and its timestamp. Note whether the failed URL is the input or output and whether it uses HTTP(S), RTMP(S), or another protocol.
- Check YouTube’s health message. In Live Control Room, compare timestamped errors with FFmpeg’s log. YouTube’s live-streaming error guide covers format, bitrate, video and audio codec, sample rate, channel count, and audio-stream problems. An input reconnect flag will not fix those ingest issues.
- Apply only the retry options that match the failed connection. For a genuinely endless HTTP live input, see the example below. For a publishing error, inspect the output error and YouTube settings instead.
- Test the actual recovery. Monitor stream health with representative audio and movement, and confirm that playback resumes as intended. A reconnect attempt does not guarantee that the source returns or that playback resumes at the exact media position.
When HTTP reconnect options apply
If FFmpeg reads a live HTTP(S) feed and that input disconnects or ends unexpectedly, HTTP protocol options may help. Put them immediately before the input URL they configure:

FFmpeg options are position-sensitive: putting HTTP input options on the YouTube output does not make them RTMP(S) publishing retries.

These options govern HTTP protocol handling; they are not interchangeable with a shell loop or an operating-system service manager. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and the installed binary for supported options, placement, and defaults. Do not assume every option is enabled by default.
Why does FFmpeg reconnect but the YouTube stream still stop?
A successful input retry only addresses the input side. YouTube can still reject or lose the published stream, or FFmpeg can stop for an unrelated reason. Use the error at the relevant layer rather than adding more input flags.

If the YouTube output fails
- Read FFmpeg’s output error and Live Control Room’s health message at the same timestamp.
- Confirm the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room. Check whether the key was reset or replaced; do not publish it in logs or support requests.
- Verify the output protocol and network path. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS and lists supported ingest settings, including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
- Use the bitrate recommendation for the stream’s actual resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current settings table; there is no single bitrate appropriate to every stream. Address the precise warning shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming every disconnect is a key problem.
If EOF or a local source is involved
For a local file or playlist, EOF may be expected. Decide whether the stream should restart the same item, advance to the next item, or stop. Adding reconnect-at-EOF without checking that behavior can cause looping or prevent content from advancing; it may also fail to help if EOF is simply normal completion.
If FFmpeg exits or the connection is unstable
A reconnect option cannot restart a process after it exits. Check the first fatal error, the machine’s power and network state, and whether the source itself remains available. YouTube recommends leaving upload capacity available: its current guidance recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. Test outbound upload rather than relying on download speed, and account for other traffic sharing the connection. YouTube also warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream in its streaming tips.

How to keep FFmpeg streaming to YouTube 24/7
Reconnect flags are one part of a reliable setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. After resolving the cause, make failures visible and verify recovery under conditions representative of the devotional stream.
Test settings and recovery
- Use YouTube’s current ingest recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio format, and watch Live Control Room stream health.
- Test with representative audio and movement, not only a static or silent segment.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover. YouTube’s guidance suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. This is a test procedure, not evidence that a cable purchase will fix a particular failure.
Supervise the FFmpeg process
Once the underlying input, output, or network problem is understood, use an operating-system service manager or process supervisor to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit. Log restart times and alert a person if failures repeat. Supervision helps with a dead process; it cannot correct an invalid stream key, unsupported option, unavailable source, or persistent network or ingest fault. There is no single verified supervisor configuration that suits every system, so follow the service manager’s documentation and test its restart behavior.

What to include when asking for a specific fix
There is no universal one-line fix without the command and failure evidence. If seeking help, share the sanitized command, FFmpeg version and build, the full log around the first failure, whether the problem is on input or output, the protocol, the timestamp, and YouTube’s corresponding health message. Remove stream keys, tokens, and private URLs before posting.
