You can keep an FFmpeg stream running through a scheduled power cut only if you back up the whole path: the Raspberry Pi, any camera or capture hardware, and the network equipment required for internet access. Set FFmpeg to publish to YouTube Live at a resolution and bitrate your tested upload and Pi can sustain, then test the complete setup on backup power for the longest outage you expect. A Pi UPS alone cannot keep a stream online if the router, ONT, or internet connection goes down.

What has to stay working

A YouTube stream depends on more than the encoder. Make a list of every device in the video, audio, and network path, then decide which must remain powered for the broadcast to continue.

  • Video and audio: the Pi and, if used, a camera, capture device, microphone interface, or powered hub.
  • Network: the router and any modem, fiber ONT, PoE switch, or other equipment your connection requires.
  • Internet service: confirm with your ISP whether the service remains available during a local outage. Battery power cannot preserve an unpowered building-level network component or restore an unavailable connection.

Scheduled power cuts do not follow one national timetable. Check your local electricity distribution company’s notices, plan for the longest credible interruption plus reserve, and verify your ISP’s behavior at your location. The state, locality, cut duration, and provider are not specified here, so no universal outage schedule or guaranteed stream duration can be given.

Prepare the Pi and choose the stream settings

Check the exact board and FFmpeg build

Confirm the Raspberry Pi model, operating system, boot medium, video/audio source, and whether FFmpeg must encode the input or can copy it. There is no single capture command that fits every camera or input. The installed FFmpeg build must support the input device and RTMP or RTMPS publishing; check locally with ffmpeg -protocols and ffmpeg -encoders. FFmpeg documents RTMP URL syntax and publishing, but packaged builds do not all include identical support (FFmpeg Protocols Documentation).

Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as targets

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols, H.264, H.265, or AV1 as video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. H.264 is a documented option, but do not assume a particular Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate smoothly. Test the actual board, input, and FFmpeg build.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of your connection or guarantees of available bandwidth. YouTube advises choosing quality based on the internet connection and testing upload bitrate; leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate. Its encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect the key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the event.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint if your FFmpeg build supports it.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or shell history. Store it in a protected configuration or environment file, or a suitably permissioned service configuration.
  4. Use the endpoint and key format provided by YouTube for that event and verify that your FFmpeg build accepts it. Do not publish with literal placeholder credentials.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and recommends it. Use the account-provided endpoint; its troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 for certain SSL errors only where the URL and configuration call for it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Publish a file or live input with FFmpeg

Looping a video file

This illustrative command replays a file in real time and encodes H.264 video and AAC audio. Adapt the input, output dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, GOP, and endpoint to your source, Pi, measured upload, and YouTube event before relying on it:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k -g 50 -keyint_min 50 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "$YOUTUBE_URL/$YOUTUBE_KEY"

-re reads a file at real-time speed; -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. Remove the loop option if you do not want repetition. The sample bitrate is an example, not a recommended setting for every resolution or connection. For a live camera or other already-real-time input, replace the input and use the device-specific options; -re is generally not needed for an already-real-time source.

Set the keyframe interval for your frame rate

Choose a GOP of about two seconds: at 25 frames per second, -g 50 and -keyint_min 50 represent two seconds; at 30 fps, use 60. Keep the encoder’s behavior CBR-like and set resolution and bitrate to a combination the Pi can sustain and the upload can carry. A hardware H.264 encoder may reduce CPU load only if the selected board, FFmpeg build, and input workflow support it; verify locally and test under sustained load.

Test before scheduling a critical broadcast

  1. Use an unlisted or private test event, with representative audio and motion.
  2. Check FFmpeg logs, YouTube stream health, upload stability, dropped frames, CPU temperature, and throttling.
  3. Repeat the test with the complete system on backup power for the intended duration. Confirm that network equipment stays powered and that the ISP connection remains available.
  4. Test behavior after a network interruption and a power restoration. FFmpeg restarting does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same event automatically; confirm whether the event must be restarted manually.

Size backup power for the complete load

There is no honest universal UPS capacity or runtime for this setup without the Pi model, powered peripherals, measured full-system draw, required runtime, UPS output and transfer behavior, and ISP equipment. Raspberry Pi’s supply recommendations describe suitable power supplies, not measured FFmpeg consumption or battery runtime.

Raspberry Pi models listed Recommended supply
Pi 5 and Pi 500 5 V at 5 A
Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400 5 V at 3 A
Pi 1, Pi 2, Pi 3, and listed Pi Zero models 5 V at 2.5 A

For Pi 5, Raspberry Pi notes that a 5 V, 3 A supply limits Pi peripherals to 600 mA. Its guidance says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” The voltage requirement is measured at the plug, so allow for cable voltage loss, particularly with removable cables. These are board supply recommendations, not stream power measurements. Check the current Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation for model-specific details.

Choose the UPS type by its loads and behavior

  • Pi-focused 5 V UPS or HAT: consider it for a Pi-centered load only if its output, connectors, and supported model match your board and any attached devices.
  • Conventional AC UPS: it may be more convenient when the Pi, router, ONT, and several power adapters all need backup, but check their combined load and the UPS’s usable runtime at that load.

For either approach, verify regulated output, usable battery energy at the actual load, switchover interruption, operating temperature limits, recharge time, replacement-battery terms, and any shutdown/status signaling. A brief switchover can drop the stream even if the Pi stays on. Do not assume shutdown integration works until it has been tested with the chosen board and UPS.

Test the internet contingency separately

If considering mobile tethering, test coverage, upload stability, latency, and data allowance at the installation site. Treat it as a contingency only after that test; availability and performance depend on the location and provider.

Run FFmpeg under supervision and shut down safely

Run FFmpeg manually until the command works, then use a service supervisor configured to restart after a transient failure without entering a rapid restart loop. Keep logs bounded and the stream key protected. Test service startup after reboot and its behavior when the network returns.

If the outage is likely to outlast the battery, stop the broadcast and shut the Pi down cleanly while reserve power remains. Raspberry Pi documents sudo poweroff as a command-line shutdown action. Do not assume the UPS will signal or trigger a clean shutdown unless you have verified that integration.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot open the protocol or connect: check ffmpeg -protocols, confirm the selected build supports the required protocol, and verify the YouTube server URL and key. Use the RTMPS endpoint only when supported by the build.
  • YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection: test sustained upload, lower bitrate or resolution, and leave capacity for variation. Compare the chosen setting with YouTube’s H.264 recommendations rather than assuming a speed-test peak is sustainable.
  • The Pi overheats, throttles, or drops frames: reduce resolution or frame rate, check cooling and CPU load, and retest the complete encoding path. Do not assume a board can sustain a particular transcode without measurement.
  • The Pi remains on but the stream ends: check the router, modem/ONT, switch, capture hardware, and ISP path. Add backup power to each required device or address the connection failure; a Pi-only UPS is insufficient.
  • The stream drops when mains power changes: check UPS transfer behavior and test under load. A UPS that supplies enough runtime can still have a transfer interruption that breaks the connection.
  • FFmpeg reconnects but the event does not resume: inspect YouTube stream health and event state, then restart the event if needed. Validate the full recovery sequence before relying on unattended operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo avoids leaving an encoding computer running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so a home power cut does not turn off the StreamNeo encoder; this does not guarantee that your local internet service or YouTube event is available during an outage. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay powered on at home for the cloud stream to run.
  • Uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo’s plans provide the same product; only the billing length changes. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.
