To give a YouTube Live replay the best chance of retaining 4K at 60 fps, send YouTube a genuine 2160p60 feed, use the encoder settings appropriate to your codec, and end the stream before it reaches 12 hours. YouTube can automatically archive 2160p streams under 12 hours, but its help pages do not guarantee that every replay will offer a selectable 2160p60 version. Check the finished video’s quality menu and record a local copy as a fallback.
Why a 4K60 live stream may not replay in 4K60
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple playback formats. Sending a 2160p60 signal is therefore necessary for a 4K60 replay, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will make that exact rendition available for every archive. YouTube’s documentation describes automatic archiving and transcoding without promising a specific replay resolution or frame rate. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and encoder settings guidance explain the relevant behaviors.
An encoder cannot add detail or frames that are missing from the source. If your game capture or other input is 1080p, setting the encoder output to 2160p will upscale it; it will not turn it into native 4K. Likewise, a 60 fps output setting cannot recover frames that were never captured.
Configure the encoder for 2160p60
YouTube’s English encoder-settings table, accessed October 4, 2026, lists these 2160p60 bitrate recommendations. Treat them as encoder guidance, not a promise about the archive’s eventual playback options.

| Codec | YouTube’s listed 2160p60 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended setting |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum |
The table’s 35 Mbps figure applies to H.264; it is not the recommendation for every codec. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, with room for normal network variation. A connection that repeatedly falls behind can cause dropped frames or stream-health warnings even if the encoder is configured correctly.
Settings that apply across the recommended paths
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder’s output to 2160p and 60 fps, provided your source and hardware can produce them.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Ingest: Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it.
- Latency: YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K/2160 input, which uses normal latency.
YouTube’s settings are described in its encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Labels and controls differ among encoder applications, so look for their equivalent output-resolution, frame-rate, codec, bitrate, rate-control, keyframe, and ingest fields.

Prepare and monitor the broadcast
- Confirm the whole video path supports 4K60. Check the game or source output, capture device, and encoder. A bottleneck anywhere in the chain can reduce the final input resolution or frame rate.
- Choose the codec and bitrate. Use the YouTube table above for the codec you will send. Do not select a bitrate your upload connection cannot maintain.
- Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Keep the interval at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Start a test stream before the event. Include gameplay or other moving content and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health notices to catch resolution, frame-rate, or connection problems before viewers rely on the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream in its encoder guidance.
- Begin a local recording and verify it is being written. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive; check that the recording file is growing rather than assuming the encoder has started it successfully. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Keep the event under 12 hours. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and specifically includes 2160p streams. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive is important, end the broadcast before the 12-hour mark rather than relying on a long-running stream to be saved.
Find and check the replay
- End the broadcast normally.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live content list and find the archived stream.
- When the video is available, open its playback quality menu and check whether 2160p and 60 fps are offered.
- Keep the local recording until you have confirmed that the archive is present and has the quality you need.
YouTube does not give a fixed processing-time estimate in the cited guidance, nor does it promise that every archive will expose a 4K60 playback option. Check the finished video rather than assuming a particular wait time or that the ingest settings guarantee the result.
What DVR does—and does not—change
DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind while a broadcast is live; it is not a setting for replay resolution and does not determine whether the archive exists. YouTube says a recording can remain viewable after it becomes available even when DVR is off. Rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s pages on managing live stream settings and DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot a replay that is missing 4K60
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The live preview was not 2160p60 | Source output, capture device, encoder resolution and frame rate, and stream-health notices. | Correct the first point in the chain that is below 2160p60, then test again. An output setting cannot restore source detail or frames that were not captured. |
| The stream showed connection or dropped-frame warnings | Whether the upload connection can sustain the selected codec and bitrate throughout the broadcast. | Use a bitrate the connection can maintain reliably and test before the next event. YouTube’s bitrate values are recommendations, not a guarantee that an unstable connection will deliver clean video. |
| The replay exists but does not offer 2160p60 | The finished video’s quality menu, after it becomes available; the original stream’s actual resolution and frame rate. | Confirm the input was genuinely 2160p60 and keep the local recording. YouTube does not guarantee a selectable 4K60 rendition for every archive. |
| No archive appears | Whether the stream exceeded 12 hours and whether the local recording was running. | Check YouTube Studio’s Live content and retrieve the local file if available. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. |
| The video is available, but processing status or quality options are unclear | Whether the archive has become available for playback and what the quality menu actually offers. | Recheck the video later; the cited YouTube guidance gives no fixed processing wait. Do not claim 4K60 until the option is visible. |
Do you need a dedicated encoder?
Not necessarily. Dedicated hardware is relevant if your current computer, capture setup, or encoder cannot send a 2160p60 feed reliably. YouTube’s verified encoder list includes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as a hardware solution capable of streaming up to 2160p60 directly to YouTube. That capability does not guarantee a 4K60 archive, and the cited guidance does not establish that every creator needs dedicated hardware. See YouTube’s encoder list.

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; that capability is not a guarantee of a particular YouTube replay rendition. The first day is free with no card.
