Neither a home NAS nor a low-cost cloud VM is automatically cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream. A NAS’s incremental cost depends on its measured power use, your electricity rate and any extra internet charge; a VM’s bill depends on compute, included outbound transfer and any overage. Compare both against your actual stream bitrate and local costs—and confirm the hardware can sustain the workload.
What you are paying for
For a home NAS, count the extra electricity and any internet-plan premium caused by streaming. For a cloud VM, count the recurring compute price plus any applicable transfer overage, storage, backups, taxes and add-ons. Neither comparison is complete if it omits network capacity or whether the device can run the encoder continuously.
If the NAS and internet connection are already paid for, show two totals: the incremental cost of adding the stream and a fully allocated cost that assigns an appropriate share of existing expenses to it. The first helps answer whether streaming adds much to your current household bill; the second makes the options easier to compare as ongoing hosting choices.
Estimate your NAS’s monthly cost
Measure power instead of guessing
Use the NAS’s actual average power draw while it is doing the work you intend to run. If you do not know it, an electricity usage meter can help measure the device; treat the result as specific to your NAS, drives, workload and measurement period, not as a typical figure for all NAS systems.

Calculate monthly electricity with:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period × local currency per kWh
For a continuous stream, use the hours in the billing period you are estimating. Use your own tariff and measured watts. If the NAS is already running for backups or other services, calculate the difference between its baseline draw and its draw with streaming enabled for the incremental figure.
Add any internet cost that streaming actually triggers
Check your ISP’s upload, data-use and plan terms. Add an ISP charge only if your plan imposes an incremental cost—for example, a required plan upgrade or a charge tied to data use. Do not assume that every home connection has a separate streaming fee.

The listed memory and transfer values for the $6 and $12 plans are from DigitalOcean’s pricing page; the table does not infer other specifications that are not established here. Check the live pricing page for the plan and region you would actually choose.
DigitalOcean documents additional Droplet outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB. Transfer allowances are pooled at the team level, and unused monthly allowance does not roll over. Include overage only after accounting for any transfer allowance available to the account. Add any storage, backup, tax or other charges that apply to your configuration. (DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation was verified September 14, 2026.)
Droplets are virtual machines for which the customer manages the operating system, applications and data. A low posted price is not proof that a VM can encode your chosen video continuously: the cited plan information does not benchmark a stream or establish a tested VM configuration.

Bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the billing period ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = approximate decimal GB
This is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a published YouTube traffic statistic. The actual amount can vary with stream configuration, interruptions and restarts. Cloud providers may bill in different units and apply their own accounting rules, so compare the estimate with the provider’s stated allowance and billing units before choosing a plan.
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists these H.264 ingestion bitrates:
| Output setting | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
These figures concern the stream sent to YouTube, not the bandwidth YouTube needs to deliver the stream to viewers. YouTube says it transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats.

Check that the connection and encoder are suitable
Home NAS
Check that the home connection’s sustained upload capacity can support the chosen encoder bitrate reliably. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; stability, other household traffic, router availability and outages also matter for an always-on stream.
Cloud VM
Check both the VM’s ability to run your encoder workload and the transfer allowance or overage cost. The listed DigitalOcean plan prices and specifications do not establish encoding performance. Validate the particular VM, software and video format rather than assuming the entry plan will work.
YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265 and AV1; it recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. These ingestion requirements apply whether the encoder runs on a NAS or a VM. Google’s RTMPS documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over an SSL connection and specifies port 443, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, and hostname/SNI handling.
Test before starting a stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. Its encoder settings guidance states: “Make sure you test before you start your live stream.”

Compare the two options using your own inputs
| Factor | Home NAS | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cash cost | Incremental electricity plus any applicable internet-plan charge; optionally show allocated shares of existing costs separately. | Compute price plus applicable transfer overage, storage, backups, taxes and other add-ons. |
| Network capacity | Stable home upload must support the encoder bitrate. | Included outbound transfer and overage terms must fit the estimated data use. |
| Compute fit | Confirm the NAS can run the selected encoding workload continuously. | Confirm the selected VM can run the workload; plan prices alone do not prove suitability. |
| Operational responsibility | Home power, internet, router and equipment remain part of the setup. | You manage the VM’s operating system, applications and data. |
Put your measured power, tariff, ISP terms, bitrate, billing-period hours and candidate VM plan into the calculations. There is no evidence-based universal monthly total or cheaper host: local energy and internet prices vary, and the suitable VM depends on region, current prices, transfer accounting and the encoding workload.
Common cost-estimate mistakes
- Using a NAS wattage from someone else’s setup: measure your own device and workload; do not treat an illustrative input as a typical NAS figure.
- Counting only VM compute: include transfer overage and any applicable storage, backup, tax or add-on charges.
- Comparing home upload with viewer bandwidth: the host sends the encoded stream to YouTube; YouTube transcodes it for viewer delivery.
- Treating a listed VM tier as a performance guarantee: no cited benchmark establishes that a particular Droplet can encode your chosen stream.
- Ignoring existing costs or counting them inconsistently: separate incremental cost from fully allocated cost for both options.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a NAS or computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
Copyright and continuous-stream planning
Before using a recording or playlist, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its video and audio on YouTube. YouTube’s current archive behavior and any maximum-duration consequences for a continuous 24/7 stream are not established here, so do not assume a live stream will be archived or preserved for a particular period. Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and settings for your channel and stream.
