Restreamer vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Restreamer offers a self-hosted web workflow; FFmpeg gives direct control over the media pipeline. Here’s how to choose and plan for YouTube’s ingest and archive limits.

Choose Restreamer if you want a browser-based, self-hosted workflow for publishing to YouTube; choose FFmpeg directly if you want to script and control the media pipeline and process behavior. Restreamer uses FFmpeg-based processing, so the choice is mainly between an application layer and direct configuration—not between two unrelated encoding technologies. Neither option has demonstrated better real-world uptime in the available product documentation.

Both still depend on your host, network, configuration and monitoring. And a continuous broadcast is not the same as a reliable archive: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local copy and plan YouTube events around that limit.

Restreamer vs FFmpeg: what is actually different?

Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming application with a web interface and a publication workflow. Its YouTube guide describes selecting YouTube as a publication service and entering the streaming ID. FFmpeg is the underlying media tool you configure directly: you specify inputs, codecs, output, protocol options and how the process is run.

Restreamer itself uses FFmpeg-based processing. The practical distinction is therefore how much orchestration and configuration you want to handle, not whether FFmpeg is involved. The project documentation does not establish a comparative uptime result, CPU or RAM requirement, or monthly cost.

Operational responsibility You operate and update Restreamer and its host You own command construction, retries, process supervision, logs and monitoring
YouTube destination The guide documents adding YouTube as a publication service and entering the streaming ID Configure YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the output workflow
Recovery A service/container deployment is documented; that is not a guarantee of recovery from every failure Protocol reconnection options exist, but source failures and process lifecycle still need handling
Archive and ingest limits Subject to YouTube’s limits and ingest settings Subject to the same YouTube limits and ingest settings

Which one should you choose?

Choose Restreamer for a guided self-hosted workflow

Restreamer is the more natural fit if you prefer configuring a service through a browser and want a documented publication workflow rather than building the whole pipeline from commands. You still need to operate the service and its host, and be comfortable with a Dockerized deployment and the required network configuration.

Choose FFmpeg directly for custom pipelines

Direct FFmpeg suits operators comfortable with command lines and service supervision who need to define media inputs, processing, output, retries or process behavior precisely. FFmpeg offers protocol reconnection options, but those options do not by themselves restart a failed process, repair a broken source, or alert you that the YouTube broadcast has stopped.

Put either option in context

For either self-hosted route, compare your actual host capacity, sustained upload bandwidth, administration skills, recovery needs and archive plan. Use a persistent host, configure restart behavior, retain logs, monitor YouTube Live Control Room and test an end-to-end run. These are operational practices, not guarantees of continuous availability.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings for a stable feed

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than choosing a bitrate solely by resolution. The figures below are recommendations and minimums on YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026; they are not measurements of either Restreamer or FFmpeg.

H.264 output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
  • YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS.
  • Supported video codecs listed include H.264, H.265 and AV1; frame rates go up to 60 fps.
  • YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio and recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the selected stream bitrate. Shared networks can reduce the upload capacity available to your stream.

These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular host or connection can sustain them. Check the YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips when configuring a broadcast, as guidance can change.

Connect either workflow to YouTube

  1. Create or schedule the YouTube live event and open YouTube’s encoder setup. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private: it grants access to the associated ingest endpoint. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. For Restreamer, configure YouTube as the publication service. Follow the Restreamer YouTube guide to select the publication service and enter the streaming ID.
  3. For FFmpeg, configure the output with YouTube’s server URL and the event’s stream key, plus video and audio settings that match the event and your available upload bandwidth. Keep credentials out of public scripts, logs and screenshots.
  4. Start a test and check the YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the incoming stream is healthy and that audio, motion, resolution and frame rate are as intended before relying on it unattended.
  5. Make the host recoverable and observable. Set up process or service restart behavior, retain logs and arrange a way to notice a stopped stream. Do not assume that a reconnect option alone covers every failure mode.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning

YouTube’s official archive guidance says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 feed should therefore not be treated as one dependable, continuously archived event.

If preserving the full source or broadcast matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting YouTube events before the 12-hour mark. YouTube itself recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Common failure modes and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the event is ready to receive an encoder, the server URL and stream key are from the correct event, and the key has not been exposed or replaced.
  • The stream starts but health is poor: Check the actual sustained outbound bandwidth, reduce bitrate if necessary, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Shared network use can cut into available upload capacity.
  • The stream stops after a source or network interruption: Check logs and the source first. FFmpeg’s protocol reconnection settings can help with supported network interruptions, but process supervision is still needed for a terminated process; apply the same principle to the Restreamer service and host.
  • The broadcast is live but the recording is missing or incomplete: Check the event duration. YouTube warns that events longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use a local recording and shorter event segments when an archive is required.
  • The picture or sound differs from expectations: Confirm the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval and audio codec against the event’s settings and YouTube’s current recommendations.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a pre-recorded YouTube feed that keeps running without a self-hosted Restreamer or FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera.

The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo plans, then start your free day.
