If FFmpeg stops reaching YouTube Live from an India VPS, first identify which layer failed: the FFmpeg process, its RTMP/RTMPS output connection, an HTTP input, or YouTube’s ingest status. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect flags are not a universal retry switch for a live RTMP/RTMPS output. Verify the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key, check sustained upload capacity and encoder settings, then use logs to choose the right recovery action. An India VPS is a place to investigate, not an established cause.
What “reconnect” can mean
A stream that appears frozen does not necessarily mean FFmpeg exited. The process may have stopped, remained alive after losing its output connection, continued running without useful data, or been sending data that YouTube is not accepting. These cases need different responses.
- HTTP input failure: FFmpeg is fetching a source over HTTP and that input connection drops. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for its HTTP protocol.
- FFmpeg process exit: The process terminated. A supervisor may restart it, but restarting the process does not validate the endpoint, key, network, or broadcast state.
- RTMP/RTMPS output failure: FFmpeg cannot maintain the publishing connection to YouTube. HTTP reconnect options do not establish recovery for this output protocol.
- YouTube ingest or health issue: YouTube may not be receiving useful stream data even if a process is still running. The API status
noDatameans the live backend has no information about the stream’s health; it does not identify the VPS network as the cause. See YouTube’s LiveStreams status documentation.
Start by separating these conditions rather than adding a reconnect option and assuming it covers them all.
1. Capture what happened before changing the command
Record enough evidence to distinguish an exited process from a live process that has stopped delivering data. Redact the stream key before sharing logs or command lines.

- FFmpeg version and the full command with the key removed.
- Failure timestamp, FFmpeg standard error output, and process exit status, if it exited.
- Whether the process is still running when YouTube’s preview or the public stream freezes.
- The stream’s YouTube Live Control Room messages and stream-health status at the same time.
- VPS provider notices or support findings, plus timestamped observations of outbound connectivity and sustained upload.
There is no single universal FFmpeg error string established for this problem. Keep the original stderr and status rather than diagnosing from the visible freeze alone.
2. Verify YouTube’s current destination and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream settings for the URL assigned to the current broadcast and its corresponding stream key.
- Copy the URL and key exactly as shown. A successful TCP connection by itself does not prove that the protocol, key, or broadcast configuration is correct.
- Prefer the RTMPS server URL YouTube supplies. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says the URL should use
rtmps, not merelyrtmp. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance. - If you see SSL trouble, confirm the destination really uses
rtmps, verify the copied URL, and check that your FFmpeg build supports the required TLS/RTMPS connection. YouTube notes port 443 as a troubleshooting option for SSL errors when appropriate to the provided endpoint and instructions; do not substitute a port without checking those details.
Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide provides additional connection guidance. Do not expose a stream key in support tickets, screenshots, shell history shared publicly, or logs posted online.

3. Check that the encoder fits the VPS upload connection
A stream can start successfully and still fail later if the VPS cannot sustain the outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends choosing quality based on reliable connection capacity, testing upload bitrate, and testing representative stream content before going live. A brief peak or generic speed-test result is not proof of sustained headroom at the stream’s intended bitrate.
- Measure sustained outbound upload from the VPS under conditions representative of the stream and compare it with the total configured audio and video bitrate. Leave headroom for variation rather than treating a short burst as capacity.
- Test representative motion and audio. A static screen or silent test may not reveal the behavior of a full-motion feed.
- Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrate table, and resolution guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 options, and up to 60 fps; use the current table rather than relying on an old bitrate figure copied into a command.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room during a test and after the broadcast begins.
The settings above are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS route or provider can sustain the feed.

4. Apply recovery at the layer that failed
If the source input is HTTP
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists HTTP options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_on_http_error. The documentation describes reconnect as automatically reconnecting when disconnected before EOF is hit. These options belong to the HTTP protocol; confirm their scope and availability against the documentation or help for your installed build. If using them for an HTTP input, place input-specific options before the relevant -i and verify the behavior with that input.
See the FFmpeg protocol documentation. The presence of HTTP reconnect flags there does not establish that they repair an RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection.

If FFmpeg exited
An external process supervisor can restart a terminated FFmpeg process. Treat that as process recovery only: it does not prove that the next connection will be accepted or that YouTube has the expected broadcast ready. Before enabling repeated restarts, establish that the URL and key are valid and inspect the reason for the exit. The cited protocol and YouTube guidance does not define one universal supervisor configuration or guarantee an uninterrupted restart.
If FFmpeg is still running but YouTube has no useful data
Save the process state, stderr, and YouTube health messages for the same time window. Check whether FFmpeg is reporting an output error, whether outbound upload remains available, and whether YouTube reports noData. That status is a clue about what YouTube’s backend knows, not a diagnosis of packet loss, firewall behavior, or VPS routing.

5. Test the India VPS route without assuming geography is the cause
The available official guidance does not establish India-specific packet loss, peering problems, firewall behavior, or YouTube ingest availability. Compare repeated outbound connection attempts and sustained-upload measurements over time, and retain timestamps and provider support evidence. If practical, compare another destination or VPS provider as a diagnostic control. Label a provider or geography explanation as a hypothesis until measurements or provider-side evidence support it.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | What it may indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Process failure; the exit status and stderr are needed to identify why. | Capture the exit status and full stderr. Investigate that failure before relying on a supervisor restart. |
| FFmpeg remains running, but the stream freezes or YouTube reports no data | The process may be alive without delivering useful output; noData is not a network diagnosis. |
Compare timestamped FFmpeg output with Live Control Room health messages and sustained VPS upload observations. |
| Connection fails or SSL trouble appears | Wrong protocol or URL, TLS/RTMPS support, or endpoint-specific connection details may be involved. | Confirm the current RTMPS URL and matching key, verify FFmpeg TLS support, and follow YouTube’s port guidance only when applicable. |
| Stream starts but drops under representative content | The configured quality may exceed reliable sustained upload capacity. | Measure sustained upload from the VPS, reduce quality if necessary, and retest with representative motion and audio. |
| A retry option appears to have no effect on YouTube publishing | The option may apply to HTTP input rather than RTMP/RTMPS output. | Check the option’s protocol scope in the installed FFmpeg documentation and diagnose output recovery separately. |
