How to Create a Custom Java Module for Wowza Streaming Engine

To create a custom module for Wowza Streaming Engine, write a Java class that extends ModuleBase, compile and package it as a JAR, place the JAR in the Engine installation’s lib directory, register the class in the target application’s Modules tab, and restart the application. In this title, “module” means a Wowza server-side extension—not a Java Platform module declared in module-info.java.

What a Wowza module is—and when to use one

Wowza describes server-side modules as Java classes loaded when a Streaming Engine application starts. A module is configured for an application and can extend its streaming behavior, including workflows involving HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTSP/RTP. See Wowza’s module guide.

A Java Platform module is a different construct: its declaration names a module, its dependencies, and packages it exports or opens, typically in module-info.java. That is not part of Wowza’s documented custom-module procedure. See Oracle’s Java Language Specification, Chapter 7 and javac documentation.

Before coding, check whether a module is the right extension point. If the need concerns server lifecycle events or an HTTP interface, compare Wowza’s listener and HTTP-provider approaches. The API guidance also points to a Wowza IDE workflow and a Gradle/Docker Compose development guide; see the Java API overview.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create and deploy the module

  1. Choose the target application and extension point. A module loads for a specific application. Review whether a built-in feature or existing example already handles the job; Wowza’s examples include stream recording, pre-roll looping, scheduling, transcoder controls, moving recorded files, authentication integration, packetization control, and geographic locking.
  2. Create a class extending ModuleBase. Wowza’s example imports its module, client, AMF, and request APIs and declares public class MyModule extends ModuleBase. The API reference describes ModuleBase as the base class server-side modules should extend and notes support for function parameters, return data, and simplified logging. See the ModuleBase API reference.
  3. Add only the methods your use case needs. Wowza’s sample includes onAppStart(IApplicationInstance appInstance), an application-start event hook, and a custom doSomething method that accepts client and request arguments. The event hook and custom callable method serve different roles; do not assume the sample is a complete production implementation. Check signatures against the API version used by your installed Engine.
  4. Compile and package a JAR. The documented deployment route is to compile the custom module, package it in a .jar, and put that JAR in [install-dir]/lib. The official material cited here does not establish a universal current javac command, Gradle dependency coordinates, or Java-version compatibility matrix. Use the development route and dependencies appropriate to the target release rather than treating an unverified command as portable.
  5. Register the class in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager. Open the target application, select its Modules tab, and add a module. Enter a unique name and the fully qualified Java class name; add a description if useful. The description is informational, while the class name identifies the implementation Wowza should load.
  6. Restart and verify. Restart the application after adding the module while it is running. If you modify an installed module, Wowza’s instructions call for restarting Streaming Engine. Inspect application and server logs for startup evidence, then test the behavior in the target application; registration alone does not prove the module works correctly.

Check release compatibility before building

Wowza’s module article was updated January 7, 2025; its Java API introduction was updated July 16, 2026, and the API reference is marked v4.11.0. Oracle’s language and compiler references cited above are for Java SE 26. These labels do not establish that any particular Engine and Java pairing was tested. Confirm the installed Engine release, API signatures, Java runtime, SDK or IDE availability, and dependency packaging before relying on a build setup.

Troubleshoot common deployment problems

  • The module does not appear to load: Check that the JAR is in the target Engine installation’s lib directory, that the Modules tab contains the fully qualified class name, and that the application was restarted after registration. Review logs for class-loading or startup errors.
  • A method or API type is unresolved at compile time: Verify imports and signatures against the API version for the target installation. The sample signatures are a starting point, not a guarantee for every Engine release.
  • Changes do not take effect: Restart the application after adding a module; when modifying an installed module, restart Streaming Engine as directed by Wowza.
  • External web-service calls fail with an SSL handshake error: Wowza warns that custom code calling external web services on Streaming Engine 4.7.8 or later can encounter this when required certificates are missing from the Java installation’s trust store. Verify the service’s certificate chain and which Java installation the Engine actually uses before changing trust configuration. Wowza describes importing service certificates into that Java installation’s cacerts keystore and restarting the service; do not copy an old Java-path example without adapting it to the current installation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal behind your development work is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option from a Wowza module: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
