Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For most 24/7 YouTube channels, use RTMPS if your encoder supports the video and audio format you need: YouTube recommends it for general live ingestion, and it avoids the extra segment handling of HLS. Choose YouTube HLS ingest when its codec or HDR capabilities are needed and your encoder can meet YouTube’s more involved HTTPS requirements. NGINX RTMP is a relay or streaming component, not a decision that forces the final YouTube connection to use RTMP.
RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and NGINX are different parts of the setup
RTMP is a continuous-stream protocol. RTMPS is its secure extension for sending a stream to YouTube. HLS sends media in segments over HTTPS, accompanied by playlists that describe those segments. YouTube distinguishes the protocols by how it receives the stream: it describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for YouTube Live ingestion (YouTube encoder settings).
NGINX RTMP refers to a server-side module or project that can receive and relay RTMP and provide related streaming functions. It can sit between a video source and YouTube, but it does not dictate the protocol on the YouTube-facing leg. Set up and verify that leg separately: the final sender must use the YouTube endpoint, stream key, and format requirements for the chosen ingest protocol. The arut nginx-rtmp-module project describes push and pull relay capabilities; that project documentation is not a guarantee of uptime.
Which YouTube ingest should a 24/7 channel choose?
| Decision factor | RTMP/RTMPS ingest | HLS ingest |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended general choice, particularly when lower latency matters. | Higher latency: YouTube says HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously. YouTube disables its Ultra low-latency option for HLS. |
| Format needs | Use when your encoder supports the intended codecs and workflow over RTMP/RTMPS. | Consider when a required format capability calls for it. YouTube’s guidance identifies HEVC support and discusses HLS for cases where RTMP encoder capabilities are insufficient, including HDR workflows. |
| Transport and packaging | Continuous RTMP-family stream; use RTMPS for encryption in transit to YouTube. | HTTPS segment uploads, TS media segments, a rolling playlist, and specific request behavior are required. |
| 24/7 reliability | The protocol alone does not establish unattended uptime. | The protocol alone does not establish unattended uptime; segment and playlist handling are additional items to validate. |
YouTube states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” That relative comparison does not provide a guaranteed end-to-end delay figure. Choose based on the actual encoder, codec/HDR need, and acceptable latency rather than assuming one protocol is inherently more reliable for continuous operation.

Choose RTMPS for the ordinary long-running channel
If your encoder supports your intended output over RTMPS and you do not need an HLS-specific format workflow, start with RTMPS. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension of RTMP. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance for supported video/audio settings and configure the encoder accordingly (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Choose HLS when its format support is necessary
HLS can be the right option when your encoder’s RTMP path cannot provide a needed capability, such as a relevant HEVC or HDR workflow, and the additional latency is acceptable. YouTube characterizes HLS as a good fit for premium content needing high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency. Confirm current format support and the HLS endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room before configuring a production stream.

YouTube HLS ingest requirements
YouTube HLS ingest is not simply an ordinary HLS playback stream hosted somewhere on your server. The sender must upload compliant segments and a rolling playlist to YouTube using its ingestion endpoint. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies the following:
- Media segments must be 1–4 seconds long.
- Segments must use the TS format.
- The media playlist must roll and contain no more than 5 outstanding segments.
- Segment and playlist delivery uses HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
- Byte ranges are unsupported.
- Encryption other than HTTPS is unsupported.
- The Ultra low-latency option is disabled for HLS.
These are YouTube ingest requirements, not universal limits on every HLS system. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup documentation and Google’s HLS ingestion guide when implementing the sender; verify encoder support for the exact product and version you use.

Where NGINX RTMP fits—and where it does not
Think of a relay as two separate connections, each with its own protocol and failure points:
- Source to relay: a camera, encoder, or other source sends to the NGINX server using the method that leg supports.
- Relay to YouTube: the outgoing sender connects to YouTube with the selected ingest protocol, codec, audio/video packaging, endpoint, and stream key.
Test that the relay or any associated encoder/transcoder actually produces the required outgoing format. NGINX’s RTMP module is not interchangeable with NGINX’s built-in HTTP HLS module. The built-in ngx_http_hls_module serves HLS from MP4/MOV files; F5’s NGINX technical specifications identify RTMP streaming as provided by a third-party RTMP module. Likewise, serving HLS over HTTP from a server does not by itself satisfy YouTube’s HTTPS segment-upload ingest requirements. See F5 NGINX’s RTMP module documentation for its NGINX Plus module information.

Preflight and 24/7 recovery checks
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. For an always-on channel, extend that check beyond a clean initial start: neither YouTube’s protocol guidance nor the NGINX module descriptions establish that either protocol guarantees continuous uptime.
- Confirm the YouTube stream key and ingest endpoint are set on the YouTube-facing sender; keep the key private.
- Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and bitrate you intend to run, rather than validating only a low-motion test clip.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and check for dropped frames, missing audio, or incompatible settings.
- Interrupt the network deliberately, then verify whether the encoder or relay reconnects and resumes the same intended channel output.
- Restart the sender process and the host to confirm that services start in the right order and the stream recovers without a person at the machine.
- For a relay design, test each leg separately and confirm that a failure of the source-to-relay connection does not leave the YouTube-facing process stuck.
- Set up monitoring and alerts appropriate to the deployment; protocol choice is not a substitute for observing the stream.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports an ingest problem: verify the endpoint, stream key, codec, audio/video settings, and selected protocol in the YouTube-facing encoder. For HLS, also check HTTPS requests, TS segments, playlist behavior, segment duration, and outstanding-segment count.
- HLS starts but has excessive delay: some added latency is inherent in segmented delivery. YouTube explicitly notes HLS’s higher latency and disables Ultra low-latency mode for it. If that is unacceptable and your format allows it, test RTMPS instead.
- NGINX serves an HLS playlist, but YouTube HLS ingest does not work: serving segments to viewers is not the same operation as uploading YouTube-compliant HLS segments and playlists over HTTPS. Check that the outgoing ingest sender implements YouTube’s required upload behavior.
- A relay works locally but not to YouTube: inspect the second leg’s destination, stream key, protocol, and output format. Receiving RTMP at NGINX does not prove that the outgoing connection is valid.
- The stream drops and does not return: test reconnection after network loss, encoder-process failure, and host restart. Add suitable restart behavior, monitoring, and operational recovery steps; neither RTMP/RTMPS nor HLS alone promises automatic recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video or playlist running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids maintaining an encoder or NGINX host at home: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
