What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by checking whether buffering affects one stream or several. If other streams work, the broadcaster or that specific stream may be the issue; if multiple services or devices buffer, investigate your device, Wi-Fi, home network, or internet provider. Then try automatic or lower playback quality, compare Wi-Fi with another connection, and restart the app or network before spending money on new equipment.
Find out where the buffering starts
Buffering can happen at several points: the broadcaster’s encoder or upload connection, the service delivering the video, your home network, or your playback device or app. A speed test alone cannot identify which one is responsible. Compare streams, services, devices, and connections to narrow it down.
- Refresh the stream. Reload the page or close and reopen the app, then try playing again.
- Try another live stream. If other streams play normally but one does not, the issue may be specific to that broadcaster’s stream or settings.
- Check another service or website. If video elsewhere also buffers, look beyond the individual stream.
- Compare devices or networks if possible. Try a second device on the same Wi-Fi, or try the affected device on cellular or another network. A public network may block video services; cellular, hotspot, or satellite connections may not be fast or stable enough for the stream.
| What you observe | What it may indicate | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| One stream buffers; others work | A stream-specific or broadcaster-side issue may be involved. | Try another quality or channel; report the problem through the service’s support tools. |
| Several streams or services fail on one device | The app, device, or local connection may be involved. | Restart or update the app or device; compare with another device or network. |
| Several devices and services fail on the same network | The home network, internet provider, or an outage becomes more likely. | Restart the modem and router; if the issue persists, contact your provider. |
| Wi-Fi buffers but a wired test is stable | Wireless signal, interference, or coverage may be contributing. | Improve router placement or use a wired connection if practical. |
| A broadcaster’s upload capacity is close to or below its configured bitrate | The stream may be unstable before it reaches viewers. | The broadcaster can reduce bitrate, limit competing uploads, and inspect stream health. |
Lower playback quality to test a variable connection
If the player offers an Auto quality setting, try it first. Twitch says its Auto setting adjusts video quality to current network conditions. If playback still pauses, choose a lower resolution temporarily. YouTube’s official guidance also recommends trying a manual quality change and a different connection. Lower quality reduces image detail, but can make playback more continuous when available bandwidth fluctuates.
Twitch publishes these recommended viewer download speeds by playback quality. They are platform guidance, not guarantees, and real playback also depends on stability, competing traffic, device capability, and the stream’s configuration.

| Playback quality | Twitch recommended viewer download speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps or higher |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps or higher |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps or higher |
| 1440p60 | 9–18 Mbps or higher, where available |
These figures are Twitch’s recommendations; the official playback page does not state a publication year. They describe viewer download speed, not the upload capacity a broadcaster needs to send a stream.
Improve Wi-Fi and reduce network contention
- Move closer to the router and keep it in an open position rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet.
- Reduce obstructions and potential wireless interference. Netflix also recommends moving the router or device away from wireless appliances.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, or other bandwidth-heavy activity while you test playback. YouTube suggests minimizing use by other connected devices when speed is low.
- Change one thing at a time and retry the same stream so you can tell whether the change helped.
If your device supports Ethernet, compare Wi-Fi with a direct wired connection. Check that the device has the necessary port before buying a cable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for making that test, but the official guidance does not prescribe that cable type or promise that wiring will fix every buffering problem.

Restart and update the app, device, and home network
- Refresh the browser page or close and reopen the streaming app.
- Restart the playback device. Menu names and restart steps vary by device.
- Install available updates for the app, browser, or operating system.
- If several devices or services are affected on your home network, restart the modem and router. Netflix Help Center’s home-network procedure is to unplug both for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for the network to return, and retry playback.
When to contact the internet provider—or the broadcaster
Contact your internet provider
If multiple devices and services still have trouble after basic device and network checks, check for a local outage and contact your internet provider if the problem remains. Tell support whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or a direct cable and whether other devices have the same issue. If a wired comparison also buffers, that is useful information, but it does not by itself prove the provider is at fault.
Report a stream-specific problem
If other channels and services work but one broadcaster’s stream repeatedly buffers, there may be little you can fix locally. Try another available quality, report the playback issue through the service’s support tools, and allow for a broadcaster- or service-side resolution. Twitch notes that unusually high bitrate or misconfigured broadcast settings can create problems for some viewers.

If you are the broadcaster
Viewer download speed does not diagnose your outgoing stream. Check your stable upload speed, configured encoder bitrate, other devices or apps using upload capacity, and the platform’s stream-health diagnostics. Twitch’s official streaming FAQ says that, as a general practice, upload speed should equal the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream bitrate may require at least 8 Mbps upload. This is Twitch guidance, not a universal standard for every platform or setup.
Balance bitrate, resolution, frame rate, connection, and computer hardware using the platform’s current encoder recommendations and stream-health tools. Excessive bitrate, network problems, and router issues can contribute to buffering or dropped frames. If your upload is close to or below the configured bitrate, reduce the bitrate or competing upload traffic and check stream health again.
