Install MediaMTX on Ubuntu, publish a local test stream, and then configure a separate encoder or relay to send video to YouTube. These are distinct hops: MediaMTX receives and routes the local stream, while the upstream publisher sends to YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key from your Live Control Room. The official MediaMTX instructions document the local publishing step, but do not provide a single integrated MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding recipe.
What MediaMTX does in this setup
MediaMTX is a self-hosted media server and proxy, not a YouTube encoder preset. Its official introduction describes it as “a ready-to-use and zero-dependency live media server and media proxy that allows to publish, read, proxy, record and playback real-time video and audio streams.” It supports real-time media protocols including RTMP. See the MediaMTX introduction.
The workflow has two publishing hops. First, OBS or FFmpeg publishes to a MediaMTX path on your Ubuntu machine. Second, an upstream publisher or relay must send the stream to YouTube. Do not assume that putting YouTube’s public ingest address into an arbitrary MediaMTX YAML field enables forwarding; the official pages cited here do not document that combined configuration.
Choose an Ubuntu installation method
MediaMTX documents a standalone executable and Docker. Pick the method that suits how you will operate the server; neither is a universal choice for every workload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Method | Useful when | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone binary | You want a direct executable for a trial or straightforward installation. | Download the release bundle matching Linux and your machine’s architecture, extract it, then run ./mediamtx. |
| Docker | You want container-based deployment that can be repeated or managed alongside other services. | Use the official Docker instructions and be comfortable managing containers. The project recommends Docker for production environments. |
Follow the current MediaMTX installation documentation and its linked releases rather than copying a fixed download command from an old tutorial. The documentation is rolling and does not specify a stable version in the install page. Confirm both the current release and the correct architecture (for example, do not assume every Ubuntu machine is x86-64).
Start MediaMTX and publish a local test stream
Run the server
-
Download and extract the appropriate release bundle, or deploy using the official Docker method.
-
For the standalone binary, open a terminal in the extracted directory and start it with
./mediamtx. Keep the process running while testing; the local publishing client needs to connect to it.
Connect OBS or FFmpeg to a MediaMTX path
The MediaMTX RTMP publishing guide uses rtmp://localhost/mystream as an example publishing address. A successful publish makes the stream available at the /mystream path. In OBS, choose Custom… as the service, enter the RTMP server URL, and leave the stream key empty for this local path, following the MediaMTX OBS guide. FFmpeg is also a documented RTMP publishing client. Refer to the RTMP clients documentation for client details.

This establishes only the local publishing leg. OBS or FFmpeg is publishing to MediaMTX; that does not by itself establish that the video is reaching YouTube.
Get YouTube’s RTMPS destination and key
-
Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
-
Open Stream settings and use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the Stream URL and stream key into the encoder or relay that will publish to YouTube.
-
Check that the chosen address begins with the RTMPS destination shown by YouTube. The default displayed address may be ordinary RTMP; do not treat RTMP and RTMPS as interchangeable when you specifically intend secure ingest.

Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel’s stream.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and instructs creators to obtain the current URL and key in Live Control Room. Its destination can vary, so use the values shown for your own stream rather than hard-coding a tutorial’s URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Understand the second hop to YouTube
At this point, MediaMTX can receive the local stream and YouTube has supplied a destination URL and key. You still need a program configured to send media onward to YouTube. Choose an upstream publisher or relay that supports the required output and enter YouTube’s RTMPS URL and key in that program’s own settings. The pages linked above establish these separate pieces, but do not specify a complete, official MediaMTX-to-YouTube relay recipe or a YAML field for forwarding to YouTube. Do not add a guessed destination field to the MediaMTX configuration.
RTMP and RTMPS describe transport; they do not determine your video content or substitute for YouTube’s encoder and channel requirements. YouTube recommends retrieving ingest details from Live Control Room, and its RTMPS help page explains the secure transport. The reviewed MediaMTX documentation also discusses RTMPS support for MediaMTX server-side RTMP connections when TLS is configured; that is not the same as configuring a remote YouTube destination.

Validate MediaMTX configuration changes
If you edit a MediaMTX YAML configuration file, validate it before restarting the service. The configuration guide documents this command:
./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml
Replace the example path with the actual file location. MediaMTX documents configuration by file, environment variables, or Control API; see its configuration guide. Validation confirms that the configuration can be parsed; it does not establish that a separate publisher is forwarding to YouTube or that YouTube accepts the stream.

-
The local client cannot connect: confirm MediaMTX is running and that the client is publishing to the expected local address and path, such as
rtmp://localhost/mystream. If the client is on a different machine, localhostrefers to that client machine, not the Ubuntu host; use an address reachable from the client and ensure networking permits the connection. -
YouTube shows no incoming stream: check which program performs the second hop. Publishing only to MediaMTX does not send the stream onward. Confirm the upstream publisher is active and uses the current URL and key shown in Live Control Room.

The encoder rejects the destination or secure connection: verify that you copied YouTube’s RTMPS URL rather than the default RTMP value, and that the selected publisher supports the destination’s transport. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL.
-
YouTube does not accept the key: return to the correct event’s Stream settings and copy its current key carefully. Avoid sharing or exposing the key; if it may have been compromised, replace it through YouTube’s live-stream settings.
-
MediaMTX fails to start after a YAML edit: run
./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.ymlwith the actual file path and correct syntax before restarting. -
