Yes. A mini PC can run a YouTube podcast livestream through OBS Studio, provided it can handle your scene and encoding settings and your internet connection can sustain the upload. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, add its server URL and stream key to OBS, test the picture and audio in YouTube’s preview, then go live. Start with 720p30 or 1080p30 and choose between them based on a real test of your mini PC and connection—not a universal hardware minimum.
What you need before setting up
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions.
- A mini PC running a supported operating system and a current version of OBS Studio.
- A microphone, and optionally a webcam if you want an on-camera show. For multiple speakers or XLR microphones, a mixer or audio interface may suit your setup; neither is required for every podcast.
- A reliable internet connection with enough available upload capacity for the full stream bitrate, including other people or devices using the connection.
There is no single CPU or RAM threshold that guarantees streaming will work. OBS says that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record; the load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the mini PC’s supported hardware encoder and codec options, if any. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but support and image quality vary by encoder generation. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync for supported Intel graphics. For device setup details, see OBS Studio’s system requirements and quick-start guide.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create the event. Choose Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for a new stream or Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page and let viewers set reminders. YouTube advises preparing the stream at least two hours before the event. See YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube provides these in the stream setup. Treat the key like a password: it identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not show it on-screen, share it, or include it in a recording.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If the connection flow asks for a server, use YouTube’s server URL. Use RTMPS when supported; YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension to RTMP. OBS labels may vary by version and connection method. YouTube’s instructions are at Set up your encoder; protocol and encoder requirements are listed in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
- Build a simple scene. Add the intended microphone, a static title or cover image, and a camera only if the show needs one. In OBS, check that the correct microphone is selected and its audio meter responds. Add animated overlays, browser sources, extra cameras, and local recording only after the basic scene works reliably.
- Set a starting output and test. Use OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a guarantee. It considers hardware and network conditions, but the planned show still needs a realistic test. Begin with the settings below and adjust after checking the encoder and YouTube preview.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then check the picture, microphone level, camera or artwork, and any guest audio. When everything is right, choose Go live in YouTube’s control room if that workflow is presented.
Choose OBS settings for your mini PC and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked 2026-10-04, specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For spoken-word shows, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; a static or lightly animated scene may also need less processing than a complex one. The values below are YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrates, not guarantees about a particular PC or connection.
| Starting resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | A lower-demand starting point for a basic podcast scene or a connection that needs a more conservative setting. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Consider it if the mini PC remains stable and the connection has the required upload headroom. |
These are video bitrates; audio adds to the total stream bitrate. YouTube’s stereo audio guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the current codec-specific bitrate table and set CBR and the keyframe interval in OBS’s output settings. Avoid selecting a higher resolution or frame rate simply because OBS offers it: test the exact scene, encoder, and connection you intend to use.

Check upload capacity in India at the actual streaming location
The important speed is available upload, not the advertised download figure. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity above the total stream bitrate and warns that shared home or office connections can reduce what is available to one streamer. Its guidance is to run a speed test to check upload bitrate; see encoder settings and streaming tips.
For example, a 720p30 H.264 video setting of 6 Mbps needs more than 6 Mbps of available upload because audio and the recommended 20% headroom also count. A 1080p30 setting at 10 Mbps needs correspondingly more. Measure at the place and time you plan to stream, with typical household or office use active. There is no India-wide upload-speed threshold that guarantees a stable show, and advertised plans do not establish the capacity available at your location. A wired Ethernet connection is a sensible option where available, but the decisive check is a realistic end-to-end test.

Prepare and monitor the podcast
Before the show
- Schedule the event ahead of time; YouTube advises starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Run a test with the same audio, camera movement, scenes, and overlays you plan to use. Confirm the preview appears and that speech is clear.
- Check the microphone input and any guest or mixer feed. Use headphones to monitor the mix if they help you catch echo or unwanted audio.
- Test upload at the intended location and preserve the recommended 20% room above total bitrate.
- Open the watch page on a phone as well as the production screen to confirm that viewers can access it.
While live and after ending
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and listen for audio problems; YouTube recommends monitoring the stream while it is running.
- If recording locally in OBS, confirm that a file is being written and check the resulting file afterward.
- Stop the stream in YouTube, then stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the current Studio behavior before relying on an archive for your only copy.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or stale stream key, incorrect server details, or the encoder is not sending. | Check Settings → Stream in OBS against the active YouTube event. Keep the key private; if you exposed it, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. |
| Preview is missing or stream health is poor | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, an overloaded connection, or settings beyond what the mini PC can sustain. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, repeat an upload test at the event location, reduce resolution or bitrate, and retest with other network users present. |
| Video stutters or OBS struggles | The selected encoder, scene, resolution, or frame rate is too demanding for the machine. | Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, simplify overlays and sources, try 720p30, and test the exact scene before the event. Hardware-encoder support depends on the mini PC’s graphics hardware and codec. |
| Viewers cannot hear the host | OBS may be capturing the wrong microphone, or its input level may not be reaching the stream. | Check the selected audio device and OBS meter, then confirm the YouTube preview has audible speech before going live. |
| The show looks right locally but not in the preview | The wrong scene or source may be active, or the feed may not have reached YouTube yet. | Check the active OBS scene and wait for the Live Control Room preview; inspect it before selecting Go live. |
