To protect your Wordle streak when changing devices or browsers, sign in to the same New York Times account you use for the game. NYT says signed-in players can access saved progress, statistics, and streaks across devices; without an account, progress is stored locally and may be lost. Account syncing preserves your record—it does not keep a streak alive if you miss or fail to solve the daily puzzle.
Choose account syncing or local-only play
The main difference is where Wordle keeps your game record. The New York Times Help Center says unsigned progress is stored on the device rather than on an account, which can lead to lost progress. For play across devices and web browsers, NYT advises logging in to a New York Times account.

Before switching phones, computers, or browsers
- On the device where you normally play, check which NYT account is signed in. If you have more than one account, use the one associated with your existing game record.
- Sign in to that same account on the new device or browser. NYT says signing in lets you play across devices and browsers and access saved progress, statistics, and streaks.
- Check the game record before continuing. Confirm that the progress and streak shown match the account you intended to use. If they do not, check the signed-in account and device before assuming the streak is gone.
NYT documents account-based access to saved progress but does not provide a separate migration procedure or guarantee recovery for every missing streak.

Protect progress that is stored only in your browser
If you are not signed in, your progress is local to the device. HelpWordle.com’s FAQ identifies clearing browser history or data, switching browsers, and playing in private or incognito mode as situations that can result in losing statistics. Those are examples from a secondary source; NYT’s official guidance is that unsigned progress is stored locally and may be lost.
- Sign in to your NYT account rather than relying on a local-only record.
- If you must continue unsigned, avoid clearing browser data or changing browsers, and do not assume a private session will preserve your stats.
NYT lists Wordle among its free daily games, so a Games subscription is not required to play Wordle. Some additional features are separate: the same help page says full Wordle Bot features require a qualifying subscription.

Syncing does not save a missed daily puzzle
Account syncing helps keep the record of your progress available across devices. It does not extend a puzzle’s availability or turn a missed puzzle into a solved one. To maintain a consecutive streak, finish the daily game before the next daily puzzle replaces it. HelpWordle.com describes Wordle as a five-letter puzzle with six guesses; its FAQ says failing to guess the answer within those six tries breaks the current streak.
The available guidance does not establish a specific reset time for every player’s location, so avoid relying on a timezone assumption. Open Wordle and complete that day’s puzzle rather than waiting until after the next puzzle appears.

If your Wordle stats or streak disappear
- Verify the account. Make sure you are signed in to the same NYT account that held your record.
- Check the device and browser. If you previously played unsigned, look on the original device and browser, where local-only progress may still be stored.
- Contact NYT Games support about a technical or account issue. The Help Center explains local storage and account syncing, but does not promise restoration of a lost streak.
Wordle basics that help protect a streak
Each puzzle asks you to find a five-letter word in six guesses, according to HelpWordle.com’s FAQ. Its color clues indicate how each guess relates to the answer:
- Green: the letter is correct and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter is in the answer but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter is not in the answer.
