You can send gameplay to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by capturing a steady video-and-audio source, encoding it to YouTube’s current requirements, and publishing it to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Keeping a channel live around the clock takes more than a working command: the game or media source, FFmpeg, the host, and its internet connection all need to remain available, and someone needs to monitor stream health. No command can guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; after it is enabled, a stream can go live instantly. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- A computer or other host that can run FFmpeg and reach YouTube over the network.
- A gameplay source FFmpeg can capture, plus any capture hardware required by your particular setup.
- The RTMPS server URL and stream key for the stream you create or select in YouTube Studio.
- A plan for monitoring the feed, recovering from failures, and recording or archiving footage you need to keep.
YouTube accepts encoder software or standalone hardware for live video, including gameplay. A capture card, webcam, microphone, and headphones are workflow choices, not requirements for YouTube ingestion. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Get gameplay into FFmpeg
PC gameplay
If the game is running on the same computer that will stream it, you may be able to capture its display or a supported capture source directly. The exact input syntax depends on your operating system, capture method, and FFmpeg build. Check that the captured source includes the intended game audio, and test it before sending it to YouTube.
Console gameplay
If you want to capture console output on a separate streaming computer, an HDMI capture device can bridge the console and computer. Confirm that the device supports the console’s output mode and is accessible to FFmpeg on your operating system. YouTube describes capture software and external video hardware in its setup guidance, but does not endorse a particular capture card. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

Choose what stays on air
For a truly continuous gaming feed, the game or media source must continue producing usable video and audio. A game that pauses at a menu, exits, crashes, or waits for user input can leave the encoder publishing a frozen or empty-looking feed. Decide what viewers should see during those intervals and verify the behavior of your chosen capture path.
Create a YouTube stream and copy its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you intend to use. In Stream settings, reveal and copy the RTMPS stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Use those exact account-specific details in FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection. Do not assume an endpoint from an old script is still the right one. YouTube’s stream setup instructions
- Keep the key secret. Do not publish it in a public script or article, and avoid leaving it exposed in shared logs or shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes publishing with an RTMP URL; RTMPS is the encrypted variant used for this setup. FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation
Build the FFmpeg publish command
The following is a schematic command, not a tested universal recipe. Replace every placeholder with values that match your capture input, FFmpeg build, YouTube settings, and actual stream credentials. Input options often need to appear before -i; capture devices may also need their own device-specific parameters.

-g GOP_FRAMES -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv
'RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY'
For a live capture device, check whether -re is appropriate for that input: it is commonly used to read a file at its native rate, but a real-time device may already provide live timing. Choose the video input, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio mapping, and encoder options for the source you actually have. If your FFmpeg build lacks libx264, the example will not run as written; select an encoder available in your build and confirm its output matches YouTube’s requirements.

Match YouTube’s video and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the full requirements, including audio sample rate, color space, bit depth, and picture format—especially if using HDR or a codec other than H.264.

H.264 bitrate examples
| Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain them. Select the row that matches your intended resolution and frame rate, then test the real output. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube live encoder settings
Set the GOP for a two-second keyframe interval
FFmpeg’s -g value is a number of frames, so calculate it from the output frame rate: for example, a two-second interval at 60 fps corresponds to 120 frames, and at 30 fps to 60 frames. Set the encoder’s keyframe behavior so the actual interval is two seconds and never longer than four seconds; verify how your chosen encoder interprets GOP options. Use CBR as YouTube recommends, and keep bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer settings consistent with the selected output and encoder.
Bring the stream live and check it
- Start the FFmpeg command and watch its console output for input, encoding, and connection errors.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that video is moving, the expected audio is present, and the selected resolution and frame rate are being ingested.
- Complete the broadcast lifecycle in YouTube Studio when you are ready to begin or end the event. A process publishing to an ingest URL and a YouTube broadcast event are related but distinct parts of the workflow.
- Test again after changing capture devices, codecs, resolution, frame rate, network, or FFmpeg configuration.
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream feed from a liveBroadcast event. Its documented continuous-broadcast example shows an API-managed continuous broadcast coexisting with a separate event on the same stream; completing the separate event does not require stopping the continuous feed. This is an advanced API arrangement, not a requirement for a basic single-broadcast setup. YouTube Live broadcasts and streams guide YouTube broadcast lifecycle guide

What an always-on setup must keep healthy
Around-the-clock operation depends on a chain of components, not just FFmpeg. Plan how you will observe and recover each one.
- Source: Keep the game or other permitted media source available and producing the intended picture and sound.
- Encoder: Watch for FFmpeg exits, stalled output, and persistent encoding or ingest errors. A process supervisor or restart policy can help restart a process, but it cannot repair a missing source or bad settings.
- Host and network: The computer must stay powered, usable, and connected with enough upload capacity for the configured output. A power failure, OS update, local network outage, or saturated connection can interrupt publishing.
- YouTube ingest and broadcast: Monitor Live Control Room stream health. YouTube’s API surfaces configuration issues including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, and video starvation. YouTube Live streams resource
- Recovery: Decide who or what will investigate an interruption. Restarting blindly can repeat a credential error, unavailable device, or invalid configuration; identify the fault before treating a restart as a fix.
Neither YouTube’s platform documentation nor a sample command establishes that a particular host, script, game-capture method, or network will stay up continuously. Design monitoring and recovery around your actual equipment, and do not treat automatic restarts as an uptime guarantee.
Plan for recordings and YouTube rules
Do not assume a full-day archive
YouTube’s encoder setup page states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That wording covers streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer continuous feed will be automatically retained in full. If the footage matters, arrange a separate recording or archive plan and check YouTube’s current behavior. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

Check rights for game audio and other media
Before leaving gameplay live, check the rights and platform rules for the game, soundtrack, overlays, and any other material in the feed. A game’s permission to play does not necessarily establish permission to rebroadcast every included music track. Use publisher guidance where available, disable or replace music you are not allowed to stream, and respond to YouTube copyright notices or restrictions. Technical acceptance by the encoder is not copyright clearance.
Make the channel’s format clear
Always-on operation does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s channel policies. Make the stream’s title, description, and actual content accurately represent what viewers will see, and review YouTube’s current reused-content and monetization policies if you intend to monetize. Avoid presenting a repetitive or unattended feed as original commentary or gameplay if it is not.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube rather than capture live gameplay from a running game, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not capture a live camera or game session, and it streams to YouTube only.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Each slot uses one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Other durations are also available; the same product is included on every plan, with the billing length changing.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. For five or more slots, contact support. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo pricing for the applicable options, or try it with no card at StreamNeo’s free first-day signup.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed | Wrong or stale RTMPS URL/key, network trouble, or an unavailable endpoint. | Copy the current URL and key from the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, confirm the key has not changed, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error and network access. |
| Video appears but no audio is heard | Audio was not captured, mapped, or encoded in a supported format. | Confirm the input contains audio, map the intended audio stream, check encoder output and YouTube’s preview, and use AAC or MP3 settings supported by the current guide. YouTube encoder settings |
| Stream health reports low bitrate | Configured bitrate may be too low, or the connection may not sustain the target output reliably. | Compare the chosen resolution/frame-rate setting with YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, then test upload stability and reduce output demands if needed. |
| Frame-rate mismatch or choppy motion | Capture and output frame rates may differ, or the host may not encode fast enough. | Check the capture mode, output frame-rate configuration, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube stream health; select a frame rate the source and host can sustain. |
| Video starvation or frozen gameplay | The game or capture device stopped producing frames, or the source became unavailable. | Check that the game is running, the capture device is still detected, and the selected input has not stalled. A process restart will not restore a missing source by itself. |
| Feed stops after a reboot or outage | FFmpeg is not running, the host has not recovered, or the source requires manual relaunch. | Inspect host startup behavior, service or supervisor logs, capture-device readiness, and the stream’s current lifecycle state before restarting. |
Useful checks before leaving it unattended
- Run a representative test of the actual game, capture method, audio path, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network.
- Confirm the stream appears correctly in Live Control Room and that YouTube reports healthy video and audio.
- Know how to stop and restart the broadcast safely, rotate an exposed key, and diagnose encoder versus source versus network errors.
- Set up monitoring that alerts a responsible person when FFmpeg exits or YouTube reports a problem; do not assume a restart loop resolves every failure.
- Make a separate recording plan if you need footage from streams that run 12 hours or longer.
