RE ENGINE is Capcom’s in-house engine, developed around its own games; Unreal Engine is Epic’s publicly available engine, with published documentation, source-code access, and licensing terms. For most outside developers, the first practical difference is access: the sources reviewed do not establish general access to RE ENGINE, while Epic documents how teams can use Unreal. Neither engine is universally better, and the available sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison.
What each engine is—and who can use it
RE ENGINE: Capcom’s in-house technology
Capcom describes RE ENGINE as its in-house game-development engine. The company says it supports multiple platforms and is used across games with very different visual styles, including the photorealistic Resident Evil Requiem and anime-style Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection (Capcom’s 2025 report).
That range is a useful correction to the idea that RE ENGINE is only for horror or photorealism. Capcom also says it upgrades the engine to suit individual titles. But this is a description of Capcom’s own production environment, not evidence that independent studios can license or download the engine.
Capcom reported holding a hands-on game-development class with Kindai University in 2024. That demonstrates an educational activity, not general availability to outside developers. The reviewed Capcom sources do not state public access terms or pricing for independent teams.

Unreal Engine: a public development platform
Epic makes Unreal Engine resources available publicly, including documentation, onboarding, tutorials, and samples. Its game-development overview also describes source-code access and support for multiplayer and networked games (Epic’s game-development overview).
Epic’s materials name tools including Lumen for dynamic global illumination, Nanite, Virtual Shadow Maps, World Partition, and One File Per Actor. These are vendor-documented features—not findings from a head-to-head test against RE ENGINE.

How the differences affect a development project
| Decision area | RE ENGINE | Unreal Engine | What to establish |

| Access | Capcom calls it in-house technology; general external access is not established in the reviewed sources. | Epic publicly offers the engine, documentation, and source-code access. | Can the team legally obtain and use the engine? |

What Epic’s published license terms say
Epic’s licensing page, accessed in October 2026, says game developers owe a 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million USD in gross product revenue. Epic Games Store revenue is royalty-free under this royalty description. The page also lists a $1,850-per-seat annual license fee for specified commercial users with more than $1 million in revenue in the prior 12 months who are not making a qualifying runtime-engine game or application for third-party end users. Which terms apply depends on the product and license category; confirm the current terms with Epic before making a decision (Epic’s licensing page).
Which engine is better for game development?
There is no source-supported universal winner. For a developer outside Capcom, access is the immediate question: Epic publishes Unreal’s access model and resources, while the reviewed Capcom sources do not establish a general route to RE ENGINE. If a team has access to RE ENGINE through a specific arrangement, it should compare the actual terms, workflows, platform needs, and support available to it rather than assume Capcom’s internal setup is transferable.

For Unreal, the public tool descriptions and learning resources make it possible to investigate documented workflows before committing. They do not prove Unreal is faster, easier, or better suited to a particular game. Likewise, Capcom’s range of releases shows RE ENGINE is used for different styles of games, but does not establish how it would perform or fit another studio’s pipeline.
Can indie developers use RE ENGINE?
The reviewed official Capcom sources do not establish general licensing, public downloads, or pricing for independent developers. Capcom’s university class is not evidence of open access. An indie team should not assume it can use RE ENGINE unless it has a specific permission or agreement from Capcom.

Is Unreal Engine easier to learn?
Epic provides public onboarding, tutorials, samples, and documentation, giving learners a visible route into Unreal. The reviewed sources do not compare learning curves, so those resources do not establish that Unreal is inherently easier than RE ENGINE.
Why performance comparisons need a project-specific test
The reviewed official sources contain no controlled, comparable benchmark for the two engines. Feature names, promotional descriptions, and the appearance of released games cannot substitute for a test under consistent conditions. To evaluate performance, a team needs representative scenes and gameplay on its own target hardware, with the quality settings and workload it expects to ship.

A 2016 Capcom interview provides historical context, not a current comparison: executive producer Jun Takeuchi said, “Our RE ENGINE includes everything that we need to develop games for next-generation consoles and is also optimized for VR game development.” He was discussing Capcom’s engine in the early Resident Evil 7 context; the statement should not be read as a present-day independent benchmark (Capcom’s 2016 interview).
