Game engines use generative AI chiefly as a development assistant: it can help answer project-specific questions, draft code, perform some editor tasks, and create draft assets from text prompts or visual references. These workflows are different from AI that runs in the shipped game—and from conventional procedural generation or NPC decision systems.
What generative AI does in a game engine
Generative AI is most useful in the work of making a game: speeding up early drafts and helping developers interact with an engine or project. Depending on the feature, a model may provide advice, suggest or create material, or act on editor content with permission. The output still needs a developer’s review; these capabilities do not guarantee production-ready code or assets.
In practice, “AI in a game engine” can describe several distinct things. Separating them makes it easier to understand what a tool actually does and whether it affects development or gameplay.
- Generative assistance: a model responds to prompts with explanations, code, content, or tool actions.
- Trained-model inference: a model runs inside the editor or game to make predictions or generate results at runtime.
- Procedural generation: authored rules and graphs create or transform content; this can work without a generative model.
- Conventional game AI: systems such as behavior trees select NPC actions using authored logic and game state.
How developers use generative AI during development
Ask questions and work with project context
An in-editor assistant can help answer engine questions, inspect project information, and suggest ways to solve a problem without requiring developers to leave the editor. Unity describes its Assistant as project-integrated and distinguishes between an Ask mode for read-only guidance and an Agent mode that can make changes to objects and assets, subject to permissions and approval. See Unity Assistant documentation for its described workflow.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: advice is not the same as permission to modify a project. Developers should understand which project data the assistant can access and what approval is required before it takes an action.
Draft or modify code
A model can help draft code, explain existing code, or suggest edits in response to a developer’s instructions. Where an assistant can make changes rather than simply advise, those changes should be reviewed and tested like other code changes. A generated answer may be incomplete, incompatible with a project’s engine version, or unsuitable for its architecture.
Generate draft assets from prompts or references
Asset generators can turn text prompts or visual references into starting points for artists and designers. Unity’s AI menu documentation lists generators for sprites, textures, sound, animation, materials, and terrain layers. The documented menu features require Unity 6000.0.76f1 or Unity 6.3 (6000.3) and later, acceptance of the applicable terms, and a linked Unity Cloud project; consult Unity’s AI generators page for current requirements and availability.

Generated material is best treated as a draft to inspect, edit, and fit to the game’s technical and artistic requirements. Unity also says developers are responsible for reviewing usage rights and making any required store declarations for generated assets. That guidance does not settle every licensing or legal question, which can depend on the asset, service, and jurisdiction.

Some workflows let a language model interact with tools in an editor rather than only return text. Unity documents an AI Gateway and MCP server alongside its in-editor assistant. Epic documents an experimental Unreal MCP workflow focused on PCG tools and graph construction. In this kind of setup, the model may help inspect or operate on engine content, but the developer still needs to supervise what it does.
Epic’s Unreal MCP documentation recommends grounding the model in project examples, working incrementally, and actively overseeing execution. Without enough context, a model may use the wrong nodes or produce unreliable graph logic; small, checked actions are safer than handing it a broad task and accepting the result unreviewed.

Can generative AI make a game’s assets or dialogue?
It can help create drafts of assets and text, but the precise capability depends on the engine feature or extension. Unity’s documented asset generators cover several visual and audio categories. Dialogue generation is also possible through third-party extensions: one Unity Asset Store example advertises dialogue drafting, NPC barks, translation, and optional runtime conversation. Those are extension-specific capabilities, not a built-in feature shared by all engines. See the Unity Asset Store listing for that example; its integrations and continued availability are not established here.
Generated dialogue can be used as a writing draft or, with an appropriate integration, produced during play. Runtime conversation has different design and operational requirements from writing dialogue before release, and it should not be assumed to be a standard engine capability.

An assistant or asset generator helps build a project. Runtime inference means a trained model runs in the editor or on an end-user device as part of the application. Unity describes Sentis as a way to integrate and run trained machine-learning models in the editor or on end-user devices; see the Sentis 2.1 manual.

Running a trained model does not automatically mean a game is generating dialogue, images, or other content. The reviewed product documentation establishes model inference as a capability, not a universal built-in system for runtime generative content across engines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this differs from Unreal PCG and NPC behavior trees
PCG: procedural content generation
Unreal Engine’s PCG Framework is an extensible toolset for procedural work, from asset utilities to world generation. Its graphs produce and transform spatial data according to their setup. A PCG graph can create content without generative AI; it is the authored graph and rules that define the process. Epic’s PCG overview describes the framework, while its experimental MCP workflow describes an LLM interacting with those tools. The combination is AI-assisted procedural work; PCG by itself is not evidence of a generative model.
Behavior trees: conventional NPC decision logic
Unreal Behavior Trees and Blackboards support NPC decisions using authored branches and stored state. They are conventional game-AI systems, not generative AI: a character following a behavior tree is selecting actions through configured logic rather than necessarily asking a language model what to do. Epic explains these systems in its Behavior Trees documentation.

How to choose a workflow
Start with the task rather than the label “AI.” A tool that helps draft a texture is not interchangeable with one that can modify editor objects or run a trained model on a player’s device.
- For code help or engine questions: check whether the assistant can see project context and whether it only advises or can make changes.
- For asset drafts: confirm the supported asset types, input methods, engine-version requirements, account requirements, and your review obligations.
- For procedural world-building: decide whether authored rules and graphs are sufficient, or whether an LLM-to-tool workflow adds useful assistance. Treat experimental integrations as supervised workflows.
- For gameplay features: distinguish an offline development assistant from a model that runs in the shipped game, and plan for the latter as a runtime dependency.
- For any model-connected workflow: check what project information it can access, what actions it can perform, and how changes are approved and verified.
What the documented features do not prove
Vendor documentation can establish what a feature is designed to do, but it does not by itself show that generative AI is widely used across game studios, improves productivity by a particular amount, or produces assets of consistent quality. Nor does an engine feature resolve every rights or licensing question. Treat performance, quality, adoption, and legal claims as matters that need evidence specific to the tool and use case rather than assuming they follow from the presence of an AI feature.
