Open-world games feel distinctive when their places, missions, and characters share a coherent identity. Developers can give locations histories players can read, make missions belong to those locations, and use recurring story elements to preserve continuity even when players explore in different orders. These are design approaches shown in individual games—not a formula that guarantees success.
How can a world feel specific rather than merely large?
A map’s scale or silhouette may make it recognizable, but local details give it a sense of history. A street, building, or district feels more particular when its appearance and use suggest who lived there, what changed, and what the place is like now.
In an account of The Division 2, developer Massive Entertainment describes dividing Washington, D.C., into districts with themes, giving streets and mission buildings histories, and considering how a building changed from before the crisis to the player’s present. The team connected major landmarks to residents’ smaller stories through a timeline, a “world logic bible,” and individual micro-stories. [Massive Entertainment’s account] This is one studio’s method, but it illustrates a useful principle: make the local details consistent with the larger setting.
Environmental cues can communicate conditions without relying on exposition alone. In the same account, developers describe using heat haze, mirage-like effects on roads, sweating characters, and dialogue to convey Washington’s summer climate. Together, visual effects, character behavior, and spoken lines help the setting feel present in play.

How do missions connect to the places they occupy?
A mission feels rooted in its world when its location is more than a backdrop. Massive’s account says the team developed stories for both mission buildings and their residents, pairing broad landmarks with personal histories. A useful design question is not only “What happens here?” but also “What did this place do before the crisis, how did it change, and what evidence of that change can the player see?”
Mission design also has to balance authored purpose with open-ended play. Guerrilla’s GDC session description for Horizon Zero Dawn frames the work as finding a middle ground between systems-driven open-world RPG content and action-focused level design. [GDC session description: Systems of Systems] The point is not that every mission must be scripted or every activity systemic; it is that designers need to decide how much a mission’s identity comes from a crafted sequence and how much comes from reusable systems.

A separate GDC session description says Horizon Zero Dawn’s quest system had non-linearity at its base, supporting player choice and freedom as story systems became more complex. [GDC session description: Building a Quest System] These pages summarize talks rather than provide full transcripts, so they support the broad design challenge, not a detailed account of every implementation decision.
How can a story stay coherent when players explore in any order?
Open-world players may reach story content in different sequences, so writers cannot always depend on one fixed chain of events to make every moment understandable. A story can preserve coherence through recurring themes, clear contextual cues, and authored moments that establish or renew the player’s understanding.

Ubisoft Toronto describes using anchor moments in Watch Dogs: Legion, including cinematics, recruitment missions, and storybook-like transitions. The studio’s account presents these as ways to hold a story together during open gameplay, and advises matching narrative approach and team structure to the game’s scope. [Ubisoft Toronto on storytelling in open-world games] Its lead writer Heli Kennedy describes the storybook structure this way: “They’re defined by constant plot movement, and they use page turns to push the story forward.”
These moments do not remove player freedom; they give the narrative recognizable points of emphasis amid that freedom. The design challenge is to make those points useful whether a player reaches them early, late, or between other activities.

How do changing protagonists affect character continuity?
A fixed protagonist offers a stable point of view. When players can recruit or switch among playable characters, the game instead has to establish what remains consistent across a changing cast.
For Watch Dogs: Legion, Ubisoft Toronto says players could recruit and play characters drawn from the game’s population, with different identities, backstories, abilities, gadgets, and perks. The team paired them with authored “anchor characters”—allies and villains who remained constant. Its stated aim was for recruited characters to have opinions about those anchors and help move the story forward. [Ubisoft Toronto’s account of its approach]

The broader lesson is to decide what carries the throughline when the player-facing character changes. Depending on the game, that could be recurring people, shared regional themes, contextual reminders, or story beats that still make sense in multiple sequences. Ubisoft Toronto also recommends developing characters in ways that rely less on a strictly linear plot arc when the gameplay itself is non-linear.
How do designers protect important story information?
Players may encounter dialogue or story-critical instructions while navigating, fighting, or pursuing optional content. If attention is divided, a crucial moment can be easy to miss. In coverage of his GDC 2023 talk, Game Developer reports that Paweł Sasko discussed pacing, emotional moments, and minimizing distractions when important information is conveyed. He put the goal simply: “We want the players to want the story.” [Game Developer’s report on Sasko’s talk]
This is a reported design idea, not a universal rule. The practical question for a team is whether the player has a fair chance to notice and understand a moment that matters, given what else the game asks them to do at that time.
A 2026 GDC session description about Ghost of Yōtei says playtesters once skipped open-world content, creating onboarding, comprehension, and progression issues. The developers’ stated talk takeaways concern how to manage that challenge; the page is their account and intended session summary, not independent player research. [GDC session description: Designing the Open World of Ghost of Yōtei]
What should players look for when judging open-world design?
These examples suggest a few useful questions for comparing games. They are lenses for noticing design choices, not a ranking or a checklist every game must satisfy.
Quick Recap
- Freedom and guidance: How much control do you have over route and order, and what cues help you understand the story as you go?
- Authored missions and systemic content: Does an activity have a distinctive narrative or level-design purpose, or does it mainly recombine game systems?
- Scale and specificity: Do large regions have distinct themes, and do individual locations offer details that make their histories legible?
- Cast variability and continuity: If the playable character changes, what people or story structures keep the narrative connected?
- Information and distraction: Can you take in important story information while the game is asking you to explore, move, or fight?
