Choose the platform that supports the games you actually plan to play, works with hardware you own or want, and fits how you play with friends. Start with a short list of must-play games and check each game’s platform, edition, multiplayer, and save features before buying: Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox do not have a universal winner.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down the games you expect to buy or play soon, then confirm that each is available on your intended platform in the edition you want. A game appearing on one platform does not mean it is available on the others, and features can differ between versions.
For each game, check its current store listing or official support information for:
- Platform and edition availability.
- Whether online multiplayer requires a subscription.
- Whether cross-play lets you play with friends on other platforms.
- Whether cross-save or cross-progression carries progress between platforms.
- Account requirements and any version-specific features.
These details are title-specific. Do not assume that a friend on another platform can join your game, or that a save will follow you if you later switch systems.

Compare the platforms against your needs

This comparison is a checklist, not a ranking. Availability, requirements, and features change by game, region, and service plan.
Should you get a gaming PC or a console?
Choose Steam if PC gaming fits your setup
Steam is a PC game storefront, so your choice depends on having a PC that meets the requirements of the games you want. Check each game’s current minimum and recommended specifications before relying on an existing computer or choosing new hardware.
Steam is also one of the retailers for PlayStation Studios PC games that are available on PC, alongside Epic Games. That does not mean every PlayStation game is on Steam or that a PlayStation console purchase converts into a PC copy.

Valve’s refund policy says you can request a refund for a game within two weeks of purchase if you have played it for less than two hours, subject to conditions and exceptions. Requests outside those rules may be reviewed but are not guaranteed. The policy page is labeled last updated April 23, 2024, so check the live policy before relying on it: Steam Refunds.
Choose PlayStation if its games and console experience fit
PlayStation Plus has three plans with different benefits, including online multiplayer, monthly games, cloud storage, and, depending on the plan, game catalog and streaming benefits. The catalog and prices can vary by plan and region, so compare the current offering where you live rather than treating membership as a fixed cost.
PlayStation Support says, “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” This applies to most games, not every game; check the requirements for the specific title. See PlayStation Plus support.

Choose Xbox after checking compatibility and format
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S fact sheet documents backward compatibility for existing Xbox One games and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. It does not establish that every game from those generations works, so look up the exact title before making a purchase decision. The fact sheet also distinguishes digital-only hardware from disc-capable hardware: if you own discs or want to buy physical games, confirm the exact console model’s drive before ordering. Game Pass access and device limits vary by plan. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe account-based access and plan-dependent device limits, so check the current plan’s supported devices, included games, and simultaneous-use limits rather than assuming one subscription works identically everywhere: Microsoft Services Agreement.

It depends on the game, platform, and service. On PlayStation, most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, according to PlayStation Support. For any specific game, verify its current online requirements on the platform store or official support page; do not assume the rule applies to every game or that the same rule applies across Steam and Xbox.

When comparing a subscription, look beyond its name. Check the current regional price, the games or benefits included, supported devices, and whether the plan covers the multiplayer or catalog access you actually want.

Usually, you should treat a purchase on one platform as a purchase for that platform unless the game publisher explicitly says otherwise. PlayStation’s PC Games FAQ says PlayStation Studios PC and console versions are separate products, and saves cannot currently transfer between PC and PS4/PS5 versions. It also says a PSN account is not currently required for every PlayStation Studios PC game, although select titles require one, and controller feature support varies by title. Those policies concern PlayStation Studios PC games, not every publisher’s releases: PlayStation PC Games FAQ.
For a game you might play across devices, confirm cross-save or cross-progression support for the exact title and the platforms involved. Cross-play, cross-save, and account linking are separate features; support for one does not guarantee the others.

Work out the full cost before you choose
Compare the cost of playing your shortlist, not just the sticker price of a console or PC. Include:
- Hardware you need to buy, including a PC capable of running the games you want.
- Game prices and the specific editions you intend to purchase.
- Any subscription required for the online features or catalog access you plan to use.
- Storage or upgrades you may need for your chosen hardware.
- Whether physical discs matter to you and whether the console model you are considering can use them.
Subscription prices, catalogs, game availability, console models, and bundles can change. Check current regional listings before deciding; a price or benefit for one region or plan may not apply to another.

- Make a shortlist. Write down the games you most want to play, including the editions or expansions that matter to you.
- Verify availability and features. Check each title’s store page or official support details for platform availability, multiplayer requirements, cross-play, cross-save, and account needs.
- Check the hardware gap. Identify what you already own and what you would have to buy. For Steam, compare your PC with each game’s requirements; for consoles, confirm the exact model and whether you need a disc drive.
- Check your group and play style. Find out where your friends play, then confirm cross-play for each shared game. Consider whether you prefer PC setup flexibility or a console environment.
- Calculate the real ongoing cost. Add game purchases, relevant subscriptions, and any needed storage or upgrades. Use current prices and benefits for your region.
- Choose the option that clears your must-haves. If one platform lacks a game, feature, or hardware format you consider essential, remove it from consideration; otherwise, weigh the remaining trade-offs against your existing library and preferences.
