Check the flight control mode before troubleshooting your device
When preparing a mission, choose a flight control mode. Bandai Namco’s official control guidance describes two modes:
- Standard: Push the left stick left or right to turn.
- Expert: Roll left or right with the left stick, then turn by pitching up or down. Bandai Namco says this mode allows a wider range of aerial maneuvers and more precise aircraft control.
If turning feels reversed, indirect, or unlike what you expect, check the selected mode before changing hardware settings. The modes call for different steering behavior, so an input that feels wrong in one may be normal in the other.
Identify your platform and exact peripheral
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on the official game page. Controller and flight-stick compatibility depends on both the platform and the specific device; a PC workaround does not apply to a console.

For each troubleshooting attempt, note the console or PC, the peripheral’s exact model and edition, and whether it is connected directly or through an adapter. Check that model against the manufacturer’s current support page and manual. A listing for one platform edition does not establish compatibility for a different edition or platform.
What is verified about the ACE COMBAT 8 flight stick
HORI identifies its ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE Flight Stick (SPF-034) as usable with PS5, PS4, and Windows 11 PC. HORI says it cannot be used on other hardware platforms and specifies Windows 11 for PC users. See the manufacturer support page and its linked manual for device-specific support and setup details.

That compatibility statement establishes the listed platforms for this model; it does not promise that every input, button label, or desired custom mapping will work as expected in every situation. If the stick powers on or appears detected but an input is missing, consult the manual and current game or manufacturer support material rather than assuming the device is fully configured.
Separate detection problems from mapping problems
A flight stick can be recognized while still being difficult to use. The symptom helps identify what to investigate:

- No response at all: Recheck platform and model compatibility, connection, and the device maker’s setup instructions.
- Aircraft responds, but steering feels wrong: Verify the mission’s Standard or Expert mode and compare its expected inputs with your movements.
- Some buttons or axes work, but others do not: Treat this as a mapping or configuration issue, not proof that the whole device is unsupported. Look for model-specific instructions from the manufacturer and current game support guidance.
- Inputs work, but labels, sensitivity, or binding options are missing: Recognition alone does not establish that the game exposes the controls you want. The official sources cited here do not provide a complete current binding list or confirm a universal sensitivity or calibration menu.
Make one change at a time and retest, so you can tell whether the mode, connection, or a configuration change affected the symptom.
Optional PC workaround reported by players
A Steam community post describes routing physical stick, throttle, and button inputs through Joystick Gremlin and vJoy, hiding physical devices with HIDHide, and presenting a virtual Xbox controller through x360ce. The author describes a multi-step setup, including splitting a throttle axis. Other players in the discussion report different results, including an X-56 being recognized while keybinding or sensitivity controls were missing. These are community reports, not official instructions or a guaranteed fix.

Consider this only on PC, only if you are comfortable configuring virtual devices, and after checking the device maker’s support material. The reports do not establish universal compatibility, prove that the procedure is safe for every configuration, or show that it fixes the underlying game limitation. They also do not provide a console solution.

- Confirm the platform and exact peripheral model. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the specific platform edition.
- Check the mission’s flight control mode. In mission preparation, compare Standard or Expert behavior with the steering inputs you are using.
- Consult the device manual and support page. Follow model-specific connection and setup instructions rather than assuming another edition’s steps apply.
- Classify the remaining symptom. Distinguish no detection from partial inputs, unexpected steering, or missing mapping and sensitivity options.
- For PC only, weigh the community workaround. Review the linked Steam discussion and its limitations before trying its multi-utility virtual-controller configuration.
What official documentation does not establish
The official materials cited here do not establish a complete current list of controller or HOTAS bindings, a universal HOTAS compatibility list, or a guaranteed fix for every input issue. They also do not confirm a specific current patch number or a universal calibration, dead-zone, or sensitivity menu. Support can change with game updates, so check current Bandai Namco and peripheral-maker support information when a device-specific problem persists.
