Create a standard account, use an official client, learn the basic controls, and pick a small goal that sounds fun. Consider membership later if its extra quests, skills, regions, or worlds are worth the current local price to you.
How do I start playing OSRS?
Download the game through a route listed by Jagex, rather than a search ad or an unfamiliar download site. The official download page lists Windows, Mac, and Linux access through the Jagex Launcher, as well as Steam, the Apple App Store, and Google Play. Jagex’s New Player Guide: Settings & Set-Up, published 12 August 2025, identifies the Official Client as the option available on both desktop and mobile, and also describes RuneLite and HDOS as supported third-party clients. Follow Jagex’s links to avoid phishing and lookalike downloads.
- Create an account and launch the game. Choose one of Jagex’s official desktop or mobile routes.
- Complete Tutorial Island. It introduces the basic actions and is where you select your account mode.
- Use the mouse to learn the interface on desktop. Jagex emphasizes mouse control in its beginner guide. A mouse is a convenience, not a requirement: OSRS is also available on mobile.
- Take a moment to inspect the interface. The quest tab can show recommended or active quests; the skill panel opens guides and level unlocks. The Activity Adviser, world map, and in-game Wiki button can help you find activities and answers without committing to a full walkthrough.
Which account mode should a beginner choose?
If you want ordinary trading and the broadest flexibility, choose the standard mode. It is the straightforward default for a first character. Ironman is a self-imposed challenge with restrictions, including trading and Grand Exchange access; it is not an upgrade you need to unlock. Group modes are for players who specifically want cooperative restricted accounts. Jagex marks Hardcore Group Ironman as not recommended for new players in its 12 August 2025 guide.
Make the choice carefully: Jagex says Ironman status can only be selected on Tutorial Island. If you are unsure, the standard mode leaves you free to learn the game before taking on extra restrictions.

Can you play OSRS for free?
Yes. Jagex’s official OSRS homepage offers a “Try Free” route as well as a membership option. Free play is a reasonable way to find out whether the game’s combat, gathering, quests, and open-ended pace appeal to you before paying for more content.
Is OSRS membership worth it for a beginner?
Membership expands the game rather than serving as a prerequisite to begin. Jagex lists more quests, member-only skills and regions, member worlds, and additional bank capacity among the benefits on its membership page. Whether those additions are worth paying for depends on which content you want to play and how often you expect to play.

Check the official page for the current price and billing terms in your region before subscribing. It presents billing choices, but prices and terms can vary and change; no single price is reliable for every player. A practical decision point is when you can name a member feature—such as a particular quest, skill, or region—that you want to access.
What about Old School Bonds?
Jagex says Old School Bonds can be traded to other players or through the Grand Exchange and redeemed for OSRS membership. They are in-game items, not physical products, and Jagex says they are tradable only within Old School RuneScape; they cannot be transferred to RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys. Using in-game wealth for membership means obtaining and redeeming a Bond in OSRS.

What should you do first in OSRS?
OSRS is a sandbox game built around adventure and self-directed play, so treat early goals as options rather than a mandatory route. Once you know how to move around and use the interface, pick one short-term objective and see whether you enjoy working toward it.
- Try a quest. Open the quest tab, check its requirements, and use the recommended filter to find an entry point.
- Sample a skill. Open the skill panel to read a skill guide and see what level unlocks are ahead.
- Explore. Use the world map to choose a nearby place you have not visited.
- Ask the game for context. The in-game Wiki button can look up objects, quest NPCs, and unfamiliar content.
For example, you might decide to finish one accessible quest, train a skill until its next unlock, or explore a new location. If none of those feels appealing, choose a different activity; the point is to discover what you enjoy, not to keep pace with someone else’s account.

Which settings make the first sessions more comfortable?
Jagex’s 12 August 2025 settings guide suggests several options that can make common actions easier. Names and behavior can change, so look for them in the current settings menu rather than assuming every label is unchanged.
- Shift-click dropping: useful when you want to drop items without opening a separate option menu.
- Hide roofs: can make it easier to see your character indoors.
- Scroll-wheel camera zoom: lets you adjust the view with the mouse wheel.
- View distance in the Official Client: adjust it to suit your preference and device.
- Player-attack options: review these carefully for Wilderness safety so you are less likely to attack another player unintentionally.
The inventory has 28 slots, as noted in Jagex’s guide; keeping that limited space in mind can help when deciding what to carry. On mobile, use the official app route if touch controls suit you better than a desktop setup.
