First find out where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only on the remote stream. If OBS’s preview and recording are both black, troubleshoot the scene, source, capture support, or Linux display session before changing bitrate or stream settings. If a local recording looks right but the remote stream is black, check the output destination and ingest configuration instead.

Why is my OBS screen black?

“Black video” can describe different failures, and each points to a different part of the setup. Check the OBS preview, then make a short local recording and play it back. This separates image capture and rendering from delivery over the network.

What you see What to check first
The OBS preview is black, and the local recording is black Active scene, source visibility and layering, capture method, source support, and the display session available to OBS.
The preview is black, but the recording shows video Check whether you are viewing the expected scene and preview; compare the recording’s content with the active output.
The preview and local recording show video, but the remote stream is black Check the selected destination, stream key or other output configuration, and the receiving platform’s ingest status.
The picture is visible, but frames drop or the stream disconnects Investigate network stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS treats dropped frames as a connection or bitrate-capacity issue, distinct from a black source image (OBS stream connection troubleshooting).

Why is OBS showing a black screen?

Confirm the scene and source

  1. In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream.
  2. In the Sources list, confirm that the intended source is present and enabled. Check its visibility control.
  3. Check the source order: an opaque source layered above the video can cover it entirely.
  4. Identify the actual source type—such as display, window, browser, media, or a camera device—and the operating system. Avoid applying a capture fix intended for a different OS or source type.

These checks narrow down the cause; no single setting fixes every black scene. If the source is a device, verify that the device is connected and selected and that its format, resolution, and frame rate are suitable.

On Linux, use a supported capture source

OBS’s source-availability matrix distinguishes Windows and Linux: its Video Capture Device source is unavailable on Linux, where Video Capture Device (V4L2) is the source for supported video devices. If you are using Linux, select and configure the V4L2 source rather than following instructions for the Windows-only source (OBS video capture sources).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a V4L2 input, confirm the correct device and check its available input, video format, resolution, and frame-rate options. If your source is a display, window, browser, media file, or a plugin, troubleshoot that source type rather than substituting a camera-capture fix.

Check the Linux display session on the Hetzner Cloud VM

OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux/Unix requirements (OBS system requirements). A server can run OBS yet still lack a usable graphical session or a display that the OBS process can access.

  • Confirm that the X11 or Wayland session is running and that OBS is launched in a session it can access.
  • On a headless VM, check that the user and process running OBS have an available display session. The requirements identify the display environment OBS needs; they do not establish a Hetzner-specific virtual-display recipe.
  • Do not assume that a dummy HDMI plug will solve this on a Cloud VM. The documented environment here is a virtual machine, not a known physical computer with a monitor port.

Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines and documents shared and dedicated CPU classes; its technical FAQ describes KVM as the hypervisor and virtio for virtual networking and disks (Hetzner Cloud Servers FAQ, Cloud Servers overview, and Hetzner technical details FAQ). Those details do not establish which graphics adapter is exposed to your particular VM, nor do they confirm GPU passthrough for a Cloud plan.

Separate scene rendering from video encoding

OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the preview is visible but the stream stutters or OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, simplify complex scenes and, if needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate. These are performance adjustments, not remedies for a source that OBS cannot capture (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).

Hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel QSV depend on supported hardware and drivers. Choosing a hardware encoder changes how video is encoded; it does not make a missing or inaccessible source appear in the preview. Check OBS’s compatibility and driver requirements before selecting one (OBS hardware encoding).

Check delivery settings if local video works

If the preview and local recording contain the image but the remote platform does not, verify that OBS is sending output to the intended destination and that its stream key or other destination settings are correct. Check the receiving service’s ingest status as well. A correctly rendered local recording does not by itself prove that OBS is sending to the expected destination.

If the image is present but frames drop, check connection stability and whether your bitrate is within the connection’s capacity. OBS notes that dynamically changing bitrate can help manage congestion, but does not remove the underlying cause and may reduce quality (OBS stream connection troubleshooting). Do not treat a dropped-frame warning as proof that a capture source is black.

Should you move from a Cloud VM to GPU hardware?

Consider a different host only after identifying a need the current VM cannot meet—for example, a verified requirement for a physical GPU or a display/rendering workload that the available guest environment cannot handle. Hetzner documents dedicated GPU servers separately from Cloud VMs; their configurations and availability can change. The GPU server page was last changed on 2026-09-01 (Hetzner GPU server configurations).

A GPU server is not an automatic fix for black video. The scene, source compatibility, Linux display session, drivers, and OBS configuration still matter. Dedicated CPU resources can provide more predictable CPU capacity, but that alone does not establish a solution to a black capture or display source.

Common causes and fixes

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next step
Only one scene is black Scene selection, source visibility, or source layering Select the intended scene; enable the source and check whether another source covers it.
A Linux camera source is black Capture-source compatibility or V4L2 device configuration Use Video Capture Device (V4L2), then check the device and its input and video modes.
Display capture is black on a server OBS may not have access to a usable X11 or Wayland display session Verify the session and the account or process running OBS; do not assume a Cloud VM exposes a physical GPU.
Preview is visible, but rendering or encoding is overloaded Scene complexity, render workload, encoder support, or driver configuration Simplify the scene or lower output resolution or frame rate; check hardware-encoder support and drivers.
Local recording is fine, but remote output is black Destination, stream key, output selection, or ingest Verify OBS’s destination and credentials, then check the receiving platform’s ingest status.
Video is visible but frames drop Connection instability or bitrate exceeding capacity Check network conditions and bitrate; dynamic bitrate may reduce quality and is not a root-cause fix.

Where Owncast fits

Hetzner lists Owncast as a live-streaming and chat server that accepts OBS Studio or another RTMP source (Hetzner Owncast app). It is an output destination option: it can receive a stream from OBS, but it will not fix black imagery already present in the OBS preview.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not an OBS or Hetzner VM repair. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on.

  • Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
