Neither Linode nor DigitalOcean can be called the more reliable choice for a particular 24/7 YouTube livestream from the available evidence. Both can host a self-managed streaming process; the practical choice depends on the exact VM, its region, sustained network capacity, included outbound transfer, and how you detect and recover from failures. For a continuous stream, calculate bandwidth from your actual video bitrate before comparing plan prices.
What matters most for a continuous YouTube stream
A cloud VM does not automatically make a broadcast uninterrupted. You remain responsible for the streaming software, its configuration, the connection to YouTube’s ingest server, and recovery when a process or server fails. Provider capability descriptions and plan details are not guarantees that a YouTube broadcast will stay live.
- Outbound transfer: Your encoded stream continuously leaves the VM. Check the plan’s included transfer and how overage is pooled and billed.
- Compute and memory: Fit the VM to your actual software and workload. Transcoding, overlays, automation, and local recording can increase resource requirements.
- Network throughput and route: Confirm the selected VM’s published limits and test the route to the YouTube ingest destination you plan to use.
- Recovery: Monitor the streaming process and network output, alert on failure, and configure a restart or recovery plan.
- Region and billing: Compare equivalent regions and current configurations. Prices and transfer terms can vary by region and billing model.
Bandwidth: estimate your monthly stream traffic
Use the configured outgoing bitrate and intended uptime, not the file size of the video on disk. A rough decimal estimate is:
Monthly data in GB ≈ bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 × hours streamed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a stream that runs for 30 days, multiply the bitrate in Mbps by about 324 to estimate GB transferred. This is an estimate: protocol overhead and the precise accounting units used by your provider can affect the billed total. Leave headroom rather than choosing a plan whose allowance barely matches the estimate.
DigitalOcean says Droplet transfer allowances depend on the plan and are pooled across the team; inbound transfer to Droplets is free. Its current billing documentation lists excess outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB. Check your selected Droplet’s allowance and current billing terms before committing. Linode’s cited transfer guidance says inbound transfer is free and excess usage is charged at a regional rate. A Linode staff response published in 2023 cited $0.005 per GB in many data centers, with higher rates in some regions, including Jakarta and São Paulo. That figure is not a universal current rate; verify the price for your intended region. Linode transfer guidance
Plan and network comparison
| Factor | DigitalOcean | Linode (Akamai Cloud) |
|---|---|---|
| VM offering | Droplets are Linux virtual machines. Shared and dedicated CPU families are available; choose based on measured workload. | Compute instances are available. The exact comparable current plan and regional price should be verified for your location. |
| Included outbound transfer | Varies by Droplet plan; allowance is pooled across the team. | Verify the current allowance for the selected instance and region. |
| Excess outbound transfer | $0.01 per GiB beyond the included pooled allowance, according to DigitalOcean’s current billing documentation. | Regional overage applies. Linode staff cited $0.005 per GB in many data centers in a 2023 community response; confirm current terms for the target region. |
| Published network limits | Limits vary by Droplet type; DigitalOcean says traffic above a limit may be rate limited. | A directly comparable limit for a selected plan is not established here; check the plan’s current documentation. |
| Price comparison | Public pricing lists bundled Droplets starting at $4 per month and included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB per month. These are starting figures, not a recommendation for a 24/7 stream; confirm current plan specifics. | Exact global plan prices were not verified. Pricing is region-sensitive, so compare a current configuration in the intended region. |
DigitalOcean warns that an undersized VM can degrade or error under load. Its published public throughput limits also matter for a sustained broadcast: check the limit for the specific Droplet type and test the path to YouTube’s chosen ingest destination. How to choose for your stream
- Specify the workload. Write down the output bitrate, resolution, frame rate, monthly runtime, region, and whether the VM will encode or transcode. Include overlays, automation, and recording if you will run them.
- Estimate transfer. Calculate expected monthly outbound data from the actual configured bitrate and uptime. Compare it with the selected plan’s allowance, pooling rules, and overage rate.
- Match VM resources. Select comparable configurations in the same geography. Use measurements from your streaming software where possible, and allow for workload spikes rather than assuming a minimal VM is sufficient.
- Check throughput and route. Confirm documented network limits and test sustained output to the YouTube ingest destination. A plan’s nominal transfer allowance does not by itself establish that it can sustain your required stream path.
- Plan operations. Monitor both the streaming process and outbound traffic. Decide how you will be alerted and what will restart the process or recover service if it stops.
- Recheck the bill. Verify live regional pricing and billing terms for the exact plan before launching. Include expected overage in your cost comparison.
Which one should you use?
Choose based on the current VM and transfer terms in the region where you intend to run the broadcast, then validate that configuration under your actual workload. DigitalOcean publishes Droplet plan, bandwidth, and throughput details; Linode’s regional transfer pricing also deserves particular attention. The evidence available here does not establish a reliability winner or a like-for-like global Linode price comparison, so neither provider can be declared universally cheaper or more dependable for this use.
