At an assumed constant 100 watts, running a setup around the clock uses 2.4 kWh a day, 72 kWh in a 30-day month and 876 kWh in a 365-day year. To estimate its energy charge, multiply those totals by the applicable rate on your electricity bill. At ₹4.50 per kWh, for example, 72 kWh costs ₹324 in energy charges—not necessarily ₹324 on the total bill.
How much electricity does 100 watts use?
Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000: 100 W ÷ 1,000 = 0.1 kW. Multiply by the time the equipment is on:

These are arithmetic totals for a constant 100 W load. They are not a measurement of OBS or a typical computer: actual power use depends on the computer and everything else included in the load. Count a monitor, capture equipment, router or other devices only if their draw is part of that 100 W assumption.
Calculate the rupee cost using your electricity rate
Let R be the applicable energy charge in rupees per kWh. The energy-charge estimate is:

For instance, at ₹4.50/kWh, the 30-day estimate is 72 × ₹4.50 = ₹324 in energy charges. This is an illustration using one Chhattisgarh tariff rate, not a national price.
Why the cost varies across India
India does not have one household electricity rate that applies to everyone. The Ministry of Power says tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may provide subsidies. These schedules also list fixed charges separately. A household’s bill may include fixed charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies, so energy-charge arithmetic alone does not establish the complete bill increase. Chhattisgarh’s schedule is telescopic: the marginal units may be billed at a different slab rate from earlier units. The added cost therefore depends on the tariff’s billing method and the household’s existing consumption.

How to estimate your actual setup’s consumption
If the computer’s draw varies, use a representative average rather than treating its rated power or a momentary reading as its 24/7 consumption. The U.S. Department of Energy advises measuring fluctuating energy use over a period and dividing by that period to determine average power. A plug-in electricity usage meter that records watts and kWh can help establish the wall draw; include only the devices you intend to cost. U.S. Department of Energy guidance
Once you have an average load in watts, convert it to kW and multiply by hours of use, then apply the relevant energy charge. Recheck your current tariff and bill components, since the published FY 2026–27 examples are not universal rates.
