Use systemd’s LoadCredential= directive to give your encoder a read-only runtime copy of a YouTube stream key, instead of putting the key in the unit file or a service environment variable. Keep the source file accessible only to the administrators who provision it, run the service as a dedicated low-privilege user, and have the encoder read the key from the credential file. If your installed systemd supports encrypted credentials and you need encryption at rest, consider LoadCredentialEncrypted=.
How systemd credentials protect a stream key
A YouTube stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to use it to send a stream to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow has you copy the key from YouTube Studio and enter it in your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key accordingly, including when automating an encoder under systemd.
With LoadCredential=, systemd loads a file and makes a read-only copy available to the service in its credentials directory. The service reads it at $CREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY/stream-key. Access to the runtime copy is limited to the configured service user and root; this does not protect the key from a compromised service process or an administrator with root access.
Set up a protected credential file
1. Create the source file
Copy the key from YouTube Studio and place it in a dedicated file outside the unit file. For a system service, a root-owned file with restrictive permissions such as mode 0600 is a reasonable example; it is an administrative choice, not a systemd-mandated mode. For example, as root:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
install -d -o root -g root -m 0700 /etc/my-stream
install -o root -g root -m 0600 /dev/null /etc/my-stream/stream-key
editor /etc/my-stream/stream-key
Enter the key in the editor and save the file. Do not paste it into a command line, deployment script, shell history, or source control. Check that the file contains only the key and any newline your encoder’s documented file-input format permits.
2. Configure the system service
Add a credential directive in the service’s [Service] section. This example uses a dedicated service account and assumes the encoder accepts a key-file argument:
[Service]
User=streamer
LoadCredential=stream-key:/etc/my-stream/stream-key
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/run-encoder --key-file=${CREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY}/stream-key
Replace the executable and arguments with the actual encoder’s documented options. Do not assume the encoder accepts a key file: confirm that it supports this input method. If it does not, use a small wrapper that reads the credential and passes it to the encoder without printing, logging, or otherwise exposing the value. Check the wrapper and encoder documentation for their secret-handling behavior.

The source file is read by systemd to create the service’s credential copy. Keep it inaccessible to unrelated users, and use a service account with only the permissions the encoder needs.

When to use encrypted credentials
LoadCredentialEncrypted= lets systemd load an encrypted credential source and decrypt and authenticate it when activating the service. This can protect the stored source from being read as plaintext at rest, but it does not protect the key while the service is running or from root access.
Availability and behavior depend on the systemd version installed on the host; distributions may backport features, so version numbers alone are not always conclusive. Check the host’s local systemd.exec manual and credential tooling before changing the unit. Prepare the encrypted file with systemd’s credential tools and select an encryption target appropriate to the manager that runs the service.
User services can also use systemd credentials. Their encrypted-credential target and provisioning must match the per-user manager; do not assume a system-service credential setup can be copied unchanged.

Why not use Environment= or SetCredential=?
Environment= and EnvironmentFile=
Do not put the key in an Environment= assignment. The systemd project’s systemd.exec manual warns that environment variables are unsuitable for secrets because they can be exposed to unprivileged clients through D-Bus and inherited by processes further down the process tree. An EnvironmentFile= moves the literal out of the unit file, but still feeds it into the service environment, so it does not avoid those environment-variable risks.
SetCredential=
Do not put plaintext key material in SetCredential=. The systemd manual cautions that literal credential data supplied that way is accessible to unprivileged processes through IPC and says not to use the option for data meant to be secret.
Command lines, logs, and scripts
Avoid embedding the key in ExecStart=, shell command text, logs, deployment scripts, or source control. The specific exposure risk depends on the system and tools involved; regardless, these are unnecessary places to duplicate a secret when the service can consume a credential file.

If the stream key leaks
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the Stream tab.
- Find Stream key and choose Reset.
- Copy the new key into the protected source file and update or restart the encoder service so it uses the replacement.
YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers do not have permission. Treat the old key as compromised and check that the encoder has resumed using the replacement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or local encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live encoder. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
