Secure a 24/7 YouTube streaming VPS by limiting network access, protecting SSH and the stream key, keeping the operating system patched, and sending video to YouTube over RTMPS. Then test the encoder and plan how you will detect and recover from failures. These controls solve different problems: a firewall limits who can reach the server, while RTMPS encrypts the connection carrying the stream.
Separate the security problems you need to solve
A VPS streaming to YouTube has two important boundaries: the host and its network, and the outgoing connection to YouTube’s ingest service. Protecting one does not automatically protect the other.
- Host and network security: control which services are reachable, who can administer the server, and how the operating system is maintained.
- Stream security: use RTMPS for encrypted delivery and protect the stream key, which authorizes a broadcast.
- Operational reliability: monitor the encoder and stream, and make a recovery route available if the process or VPS fails.
A firewall is a reachability control, not encryption. It does not encrypt credentials, commands, logs, or stream data in transit, and it is not a substitute for secure authentication or updates.
Reduce what can reach the VPS
Use both provider and guest controls deliberately
Start with the network controls offered by your VPS provider. Allow only the services the stream host needs, and restrict their source addresses where practical. If the machine has a public IP, do not assume that a service is private merely because you intend to use it only for administration. Google Cloud’s guidance for Compute Engine describes firewall rules as a first line of defense and recommends making only intended services reachable; another provider may use different controls, defaults, and menus, so follow its current documentation rather than assuming the Google Cloud interface applies.

Check the guest operating system’s firewall as well. Provider-level rules and a guest firewall operate at different points in the network path; confirm what each one permits instead of assuming one replaces the other. For a streaming host, avoid exposing unrelated services simply because they were installed or enabled by default.
Restrict SSH access
Prefer the provider’s supported secure administration path when it fits your setup. If SSH must be reachable over the public internet, constrain access to trusted source networks where feasible. Use key-based authentication, retain host-key verification so you can detect an unexpected server identity, and consider an additional two-factor authentication layer. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation describes server configuration and adding two-factor authentication on top of key-based authentication; the exact steps depend on the distribution and provider.
Before changing SSH settings, make sure you have a working recovery route, such as the provider’s console access, and test the new configuration without closing your existing session. A typo or overly restrictive rule can lock you out. Do not disable a login method until you have confirmed that the replacement works.

Patch the supported operating system
Apply security updates for the operating system and exposed remote-access software through the distribution’s supported update channel. Review how your chosen distribution handles updates and reboots; do not assume every VPS image installs security updates automatically or behaves the same way.
Google Cloud published guidance on the OpenSSH CVE-2024-6387 bulletin on 2024-07-01, advising users to apply distribution updates as they became available and to limit public SSH access when necessary. That bulletin date is not evidence that a particular server is vulnerable today. Check the current state of your own OS packages and update channel rather than treating an old notice as a present-day diagnosis.
Protect the YouTube stream connection and key
Choose RTMPS in Live Control Room
- Open the stream’s configuration in YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the stream key from the same configuration.
- Confirm that the URL begins with
rtmps. YouTube may display the ordinary RTMP URL by default. RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection and encrypts the connection to YouTube. - Configure the encoder with that URL and key. If you encounter an SSL error, YouTube suggests specifying port 443.
- Test the stream before relying on it for continuous broadcasting, and confirm in YouTube’s interface that it is receiving the expected feed.
Treat the stream key as a password for broadcasting. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source repositories, and support logs. If you think it has been exposed, rotate it using YouTube’s current stream controls and update the encoder configuration. RTMPS protects traffic in transit; it does not protect a key stored carelessly on the VPS.

Choose encoder settings for the actual stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use, using YouTube’s published ranges rather than copying a number from an unrelated configuration.

These are YouTube’s listed recommended figures for the stated H.264 examples, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload them reliably. Actual capacity depends on the encoder workload, available CPU or hardware encoding, network conditions, and host resources. Audio support and advanced settings depend on the configuration. Test using movement and audio representative of the intended stream; a static screen alone may not expose every problem.

RTMPS, firewall rules, and a working encoder configuration do not keep a stream alive if the encoder exits, the VPS reboots, or the connection fails. Treat process supervision and recovery as part of the deployment, not as an automatic property of YouTube or of a firewall.

- Supervise the encoder: use a service manager or another process supervisor supported by your OS and deployment. Verify that it starts after reboot and that its restart policy behaves as intended; do not assume a universal configuration applies to every distribution.
- Check recovery behavior: deliberately test what happens after an encoder exit and after a VPS restart. Confirm that the process returns with the correct media, destination URL, and key.
- Monitor more than process state: a running encoder process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Monitor the stream in YouTube’s interface and arrange alerts appropriate to your operation.
- Keep useful logs: retain enough encoder and system output to diagnose failures, but do not let logs reveal the stream key or other credentials.
- Prepare a recovery path: know how to reach the provider console if network or SSH access breaks, and decide what configuration or media must be backed up to recreate the stream.
These choices depend on the selected operating system, encoder, and VPS provider. Validate the service manager, alerting method, log retention, backup options, and console recovery against that specific environment.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights
Technical uptime does not establish that a broadcast is eligible to remain live or that its content is authorized. Confirm the channel’s current YouTube Live access and account requirements in YouTube’s own interface before building a continuous deployment around it. For every video in a loop, ensure you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, and other included material. A stream key does not grant content rights, and using prerecorded video does not remove copyright or reused-content considerations. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that uninterrupted encoding guarantees policy compliance.
