Monitor the parts of a game service players rely on—not just whether its servers are running. Track request latency distributions, successful outcomes, errors, demand, and saturation for each important operation, then pair backend telemetry with client reports or synthetic checks. For real-time play, add tick and network signals such as tick time, packet loss, and crashed sessions. Set service objectives against your game’s own player expectations and observed behavior; sample targets from another service are not universal standards.

Start with player-visible service indicators

A process can be healthy while players cannot log in, join a match, retrieve inventory, or complete a purchase. Organize monitoring around each player-facing operation and measure it from the point that best represents the player’s experience.

Google SRE calls the core signals “latency, traffic, errors, and saturation.” Its monitoring guidance also warns that fast HTTP 500 responses can make latency look healthy if failed requests are excluded. Track latency for failures as well as successes.

  • Latency: How long an operation takes, including slow failures. Keep a distribution or threshold-based view rather than relying on one average.
  • Traffic: How much demand the service receives, such as requests, connections, or sessions.
  • Errors: Explicit failures, incorrect results returned with a nominally successful status, and failures to meet a latency commitment.
  • Saturation: How close a constrained resource is to its limit, such as compute, connection capacity, or a dependency.

These signals work together. A rising error rate during a traffic spike may indicate a capacity problem; rising latency with stable traffic may point to a dependency or resource bottleneck. Fast responses are not necessarily successful responses.

Define availability and latency for each operation

Write down what counts as success for login, matchmaking, inventory, commerce, leaderboards, and other important calls. Do not automatically count every response that is not a 5xx as successful: an incorrect result, a rejected action that should have succeeded, or a timed-out player journey may still be a service failure.

For every service-level indicator (SLI), document its numerator and denominator, measurement point, time window, and exclusions. A request-based availability SLI can be the share of eligible requests that produce a successful application-level result. A latency SLI can be the share of eligible requests completed below a chosen threshold. Google’s SLO guidance notes that client-side measurement may be necessary when backend-only data misses what users experience.

Use latency distributions and, where useful, more than one threshold. A threshold view can show both the typical experience and the slow tail; a single average can conceal a smaller group of severely delayed players. Break down results by operation and region where that separation helps reveal localized trouble, while avoiding unbounded labels such as unique player or session IDs in metrics.

Set objectives from your game, not someone else’s example

A service-level objective (SLO) makes an expectation measurable over a stated window. Set objectives for the operations players depend on, using observed service behavior, operation criticality, regional conditions, and what players expect. An error budget is the portion of the objective that has not been met during that window; review whether changes are consuming it faster than the team can safely absorb.

Google’s 2018 game-services SLO example is useful for seeing how to express objectives, but it is illustrative, not an industry benchmark. It covers an API, an HTTP server, and a score pipeline over a four-week rolling window:

Example service or measure Illustrative objective in Google’s 2018 example
API success 97% of requests successful
API latency 90% of requests under 400 ms; 99% under 850 ms
HTTP availability 99%
HTTP latency 90% of requests under 200 ms; 99% under 1,000 ms
Freshness 90% and 99% thresholds
Correctness prober 99.99999% correctness for records checked
Score pipeline 99% of runs process all records

The document says its availability and latency values came from a limited historical measurement period and had not yet been verified for strong correlation with user experience. Treat the numbers as an example of expressing an SLO—not a target to copy. Validate your objectives against player outcomes.

Choose telemetry for APIs and real-time servers

Web and backend operations

For account, matchmaking, inventory, commerce, leaderboard, and other API calls, measure request rate, application-level success and error rate, latency distribution, dependency time, and resource saturation. Where the hosting and instrumentation support it, separate results by operation and region.

Use metrics to spot trends and alert on meaningful changes, traces to follow a request across dependent services, and logs with controlled context to investigate specific failures. Google Cloud documents metrics, logs, traces, Prometheus, and OTLP as observability inputs; OpenTelemetry’s SDK guidance also recommends internal telemetry about the telemetry pipeline itself, such as processors, exporters, and metric readers. The specification page identifies its status as Development, so check the current implementation conventions for your SDK.

Backend request metrics do not explain every form of gameplay lag. When your hosting platform exposes them, add game-server signals such as:

These can help investigate player-reported lag, gameplay delays, bottlenecks, and crashes. Availability varies by platform and telemetry destination. For example, Amazon GameLift Servers documents different metric availability across its console, CloudWatch, and server telemetry; confirm which signals are exposed by the feature you deploy.

Check the player path as well as the backend

A healthy backend metric cannot prove that a player can reach the service and finish an action. Add a synthetic journey that checks a representative path—such as reaching an endpoint and completing a safe test action—and compare its result with service-side telemetry. AWS’s Games Industry Lens recommends CloudWatch Synthetics canaries, traces across services, and custom logs and metrics for backend health.

Instrument strategic client points for activity, crashes, and player-visible error reports. Client signals can catch problems that backend-only collection misses, including failures between a player’s device and the service. AWS guidance recommends keeping game-client telemetry free of personally identifiable information and limiting it to game-specific debugging metadata. Decide which identifiers are necessary, who can access them, and how long to retain them under your organization’s applicable privacy process; the cited guidance does not establish jurisdiction-specific retention rules.

Make player errors diagnosable without over-collecting

When a player reports an error, useful context can include approximate time, game build, region, operation, and sanitized session context. Correlate that context with metrics, logs, and traces to narrow down whether the issue was isolated, regional, or service-wide.

Keep metric labels bounded: unique player, request, or session IDs can create high cardinality and make metrics harder to operate. If individual-incident lookup is necessary, use controlled searchable log fields or trace context, restrict access, and apply an explicit retention policy. Avoid collecting personal information merely because it might be convenient during debugging.

Build alerts around impact and response

Alert on player-impacting changes in availability, error rate, and latency, and use traffic and saturation to help explain them. Pair an alert with enough context to act: affected operation and region, the time window, the relevant SLI, and links or identifiers for the associated traces and logs. Use separate signals for real-time server degradation—such as tick-time increases or crashed sessions—when those metrics are available.

Choose detection windows and thresholds that fit the service and the team’s response capacity. A threshold that pages constantly without a useful response path is not a practical objective. Validate alerts against incidents and synthetic checks, and review whether they detect player-visible failures promptly without treating every brief fluctuation as an outage.

Compare monitoring approaches before adopting them

Choose a stack based on what it can observe in your game and how your team will operate it—not on a vendor list alone. Compare candidate approaches across these dimensions:

  • Player-path coverage: Can it collect useful signals from client, edge or load balancer, and backend?
  • Game-specific visibility: Can it capture tick and packet telemetry, sessions, crashes, and process health in your hosting setup?
  • Diagnostic depth: Can you connect metrics to useful traces and searchable logs?
  • Detection and alerting: Can it identify relevant failures in time, with alert behavior your team can respond to?
  • Operational fit: What are the cost and workload at expected traffic and telemetry volume, and what retention and privacy controls are available?
  • Portability and integration: Does it work with your current hosting, instrumentation, and data pipeline?

AWS’s game-industry guidance names Backtrace.io and Sentry as error-reporting examples and New Relic, Splunk, Datadog, and Honeycomb.io as APM examples. That is an AWS-authored list, not an independent ranking or comparative price analysis. Verify current capabilities, data handling, costs, integration, and terms directly with each provider.
