Before paying for a rare figure, confirm exactly what is being sold, inspect fresh photos of the actual item, check its condition and included parts against that specific model, and read the written return and shipping terms. Then compare the total price with completed sales of the same edition and condition. No single certificate, seller rating, platform check, sealed box, or listing photo proves both authenticity and condition.
1. Confirm the exact figure and edition
Start by pinning down the precise item: character or design, maker, release, edition, colorway, and edition number where applicable. Similar-looking variants can differ substantially in rarity and value. Compare the listing with credible references for that particular product rather than relying on a generic authentication checklist; there is no universal set of identifying marks for every figure category.
Ask for current photos of the actual item, not just promotional or stock images. Sideshow’s guidance for purchases from unofficial sellers or online auctions recommends requesting out-of-box pictures, including the base and edition number. Treat that as useful evidence to inspect, not as authentication by itself.
- Request clear views of labels, maker marks, the base, and any edition number or certificate number shown on the item.
- Compare those details with the exact model and edition described in the listing.
- If a grading service covers that collectible, check its certification record. CGC says its lookup can confirm a collectible’s grade and description and may show images for some items; it is relevant only where the specific figure has a CGC certification.

2. Inspect condition and completeness for this figure
Ask for sharp, well-lit photos of every side and close-ups of the face, paint, joints, base, seams, and any known weak points for that model. Request photos of the accessories, inserts, certificate, box, and internal packaging as well. A sealed box can conceal damage, while a damaged box does not necessarily mean the figure itself is damaged; assess those separately.
Check the original contents for the exact release, using reliable product references where available. Do not assume one marketplace’s condition rules apply everywhere. StockX’s Collectibles guidance, for example, specifies packaging requirements for categories including Funko Pop figures and Bearbricks; those examples illustrate category-specific rules, not a universal standard for all figures.

Sideshow advises asking a seller who describes a figure as mint-in-box to open it and inspect for damage before shipping. That may reduce the risk of hidden damage, but first confirm in writing whether opening the package changes the seller’s return terms or the item’s status as sealed.

3. Assess provenance and the seller
Ask where and when the seller acquired the figure and whether they can provide supporting records if provenance matters to you. Treat receipts, ownership history, and other records as corroboration rather than conclusive proof of authenticity.
Look at the seller’s history with relevant collectibles, whether their account and listing details are consistent, and whether they answer specific questions clearly. A strong seller history can inform your decision, but it does not replace item-level evidence or clear transaction terms.

4. Read the actual verification and return terms
Find out precisely what a marketplace’s verification or buyer guarantee covers, whether this figure is eligible, what evidence is reviewed, and what remedy is available if there is a problem. A “verified” label is not a universal promise of authenticity, grading accuracy, or condition.
For example, Fanatics Collect describes its guarantee in relation to whether the delivered item matches the listing image, description, and certificate number. The platform also says it does not grade collectibles or warrant that they are correctly graded or authenticated. Read the policy for the transaction in front of you rather than inferring broader protection from the platform name.

Separately, get the seller’s own return policy in writing before paying. Sideshow says its 30-day exchange and return policy does not apply to collectibles bought from third-party or unauthorized sellers. Confirm the deadline, how to report an item that is misdescribed or arrives damaged, and whether opening a sealed package affects return rights.

5. Confirm shipping protection before checkout
Ask how the figure will be packed, who is responsible if it is damaged in transit, and how to document a delivery problem. Consider insurance for transit damage; Sideshow recommends it in its outside-seller guidance. Keep the listing, seller messages, payment record, and delivery evidence so you can refer to the agreed description and terms if a dispute arises.
6. Compare the price with the right sales
Use recent completed sales of the identical figure and edition as your reference, not just current asking prices. Compare like with like: condition of the figure, completeness, packaging, provenance, location, and transaction fees can all affect what a sale means for your purchase. No figure-specific price estimate is established here, so the exact model and edition are needed before a defensible comparison can be made.
When weighing two listings, use the same evidence on both: identity and edition, condition and included parts, seller history and provenance, written return and shipping protections, and total cost against comparable completed sales. If only one listing has marketplace verification, compare the policy’s scope, eligibility, process, and remedy rather than treating the word “verified” as a guarantee.
