To preserve your World of Warcraft UI and addon settings, close the game and copy the correct game flavor’s WTF folder. Copy InterfaceAddOns too if you also want to preserve the installed addon files. Restore those folders to the matching game installation with WoW closed; keep the full folder structure so account- and character-specific settings are not misplaced.
What to back up: settings versus addon files
The two important folders serve different purposes. WTF holds game configuration and saved settings, including addon data. InterfaceAddOns holds the addon files themselves. Copying only the addon files does not preserve their saved settings.

Find the folder for the game flavor you actually use. A WoW installation commonly contains flavor-specific folders such as _retail_; Classic versions have their own folders. Installation locations vary, so use your launcher or addon manager to identify the relevant installation rather than assuming every WoW flavor shares the same path.
Back up your UI and addon settings
- Exit WoW completely. Do not copy files while the game is running; community troubleshooting guidance warns that the client may write settings back when it exits after a restore.
- Open the correct game flavor’s installation folder. Locate the folder for Retail or the Classic flavor whose settings you want to preserve.
- Copy the entire
WTFfolder to a separate location, such as another drive or a backup folder. Avoid selecting only a few files unless you know which addon stores data where. - For a complete local copy, also copy
InterfaceAddOns. This keeps the addon files with the settings. If you plan to reinstall addons with an addon manager, you can omit this folder, but you still need theWTFbackup for settings. - Keep a copy of the original backup before updating addon versions. Community advice notes that saved-data formats can change between addon versions; retaining the previous files gives you a rollback option, though it cannot guarantee compatibility.
Why preserving the full WTF structure matters
There is no single guaranteed location for every addon’s settings. Common locations include WTFAccount<account>SavedVariables for account-wide data and account, realm, or character-specific paths for settings tied to an individual character. Community explanations describe both patterns; addons differ in how they use them.

For that reason, preserve the whole WTF tree rather than trying to collect only files named for particular addons. Keeping the account, realm, character, and SavedVariables paths intact gives the game and addons the best chance of finding the data in its expected location.
Restore the backup after a reinstall or on another computer
- Install or locate the matching WoW game flavor, then exit the game. Keep WoW closed throughout the file copy.
- Restore
WTFto that flavor’s installation folder. Preserve the backup’s internal account, realm, character, and SavedVariables folders. If the destination already has aWTFfolder, make a separate copy before replacing or merging anything so you can recover the destination’s current data. - Restore
InterfaceAddOnsif you backed it up. If not, reinstall the addons you use with an addon manager before opening WoW. Addon files and saved settings are separate, so restoring one does not restore the other. - Start WoW and check the result. Confirm the expected UI and addon settings appear. If you moved the data to a different account or character, open the relevant addon’s options and select or recreate the appropriate profile; profile association is not universal.
The folder-specific restore procedure is supported by community guidance on WoW Forums, including advice for restoring after a UI reset and discussion of settings paths and version differences. Blizzard’s current official help instructions for a complete UI-settings restore are not established by these sources.

Manual folder copies versus CurseForge Sync
These approaches do different jobs. CurseForge Support’s WoW Addons FAQ, modified July 7, 2026, describes Sync Profile for syncing addon installations between devices and separately describes copying the Addons and WTF folders for a backup. The same FAQ says the Sync feature’s Backup option was not available when the page was modified. Do not treat installation syncing as a restorable settings backup.

If your settings do not appear after restoring
- Check the game flavor and installation path. Settings copied into Retail will not serve a different Classic flavor’s installation.
- Check the folder nesting. The destination should contain the restored
WTFfolder and its original account and character structure, not an extra nested copy such asWTFWTF. - Confirm that the addon is installed and enabled. The
WTFdata does not include addon code unless you also restoredInterfaceAddOns. - Check the addon’s selected profile. A profile may be tied to another character or realm, and moving data to another account or character may require selecting it in that addon’s interface.
- Consider addon-version differences. If the restored settings were saved by a different addon version, the data may not be compatible. Keep the old addon files and backup intact while troubleshooting.
- After a UI reset prompted by an addon problem, restore selectively when possible. Start with a minimal set of addons and settings, test, then enable or restore more. This helps avoid bringing the original problem straight back.
