Village in the Shade has an in-game history of earlier saves, but it is not a five-day rewind or a player-controlled backup. Version 1.09 added up to five previous save states per slot for saves made after installing the update. To recover, choose an earlier state on the save-data selection screen; any progress made after that point is at risk of being lost.
What the game’s backup options actually do

How previous-save recovery works
Eligibility: update before the saves you want protected
Nippon Ichi Software’s Ver.1.09 announcement, dated September 3, 2026, says one save slot can store up to five previous saves. The feature applies only to saves created after installing Ver.1.09. Older saves do not become eligible retroactively. Read the publisher’s Ver.1.09 announcement.
Checkpoint timing: usually morning, sometimes conditional Midnight
The regular documented checkpoint boundary is waking in the morning. A Midnight checkpoint can also occur in Shade mode when the applicable route and conditions are met; it is not a universal nightly save. Because a Midnight checkpoint may add a history entry, five retained states do not necessarily represent five complete days of play. The save-system guide describes the checkpoint behavior.
Select an earlier state carefully
- Open the save-data selection screen. The game guide identifies this as the place to load a retained earlier state.
- Choose the earlier state you want to continue from. The documented history limit is five previous saves per slot; it is not specified as five days.
- Continue from that point. Treat the selected state as the state you are now continuing. The available guide does not establish whether newer entries remain, how the entries are ordered, or whether loading creates a branch or overwrites history, so do not count on later progress being recoverable.
Does the game let you save manually anywhere?
The game guide does not document a normal free-form manual save that lets you create a backup at any moment. Plan around the documented checkpoint boundaries instead: morning wake is the ordinary one, while Midnight is conditional on Shade mode and the relevant route and conditions. Is Clear Data a backup?
No. Clear Data is a post-ending continuation record: saving it lets the village continue after the ending. If you decline, the game returns you to that morning so you can repeat the finale or take the other documented path. The guide does not establish that Clear Data guarantees recovery of both endings or explain its exact interaction with previous-save history. The game guide covers the ending flow.

Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s US and Canada store pages list Save Data Cloud under Nintendo Switch Online for the digital Switch edition. Those listings do not provide game-specific restore instructions, eligibility details, or guidance for resolving a conflict between local and cloud saves. Check current Nintendo documentation and the game’s support guidance before attempting a restore; the store listing alone is not a verified backup procedure. Do not assume an external copy is supported
The platform listings do not establish that copying files to a USB drive, removable card, or other external media is supported or safe for this game. Avoid relying on generic file-copy instructions as a confirmed backup method.

What to do before a risky decision
- Install Ver.1.09 before making the saves you want included in previous-save history.
- Keep in mind that a load rolls progress back to the selected state; do not assume later states will remain available.
- Use morning wake as the ordinary checkpoint boundary; treat Midnight as route- and condition-dependent.
- Do not confuse Clear Data with rollback history.
- If relying on Nintendo or Steam cloud, consult current platform and game support guidance for the actual restore steps and any sync conflict before proceeding.
