To check a collectible figure, identify its exact maker and release, then compare the figure, packaging, marks and any number against that maker’s information for the same release. There is no universal counterfeit checklist or numbering standard: a figure may be genuine without an individual edition number, and a sticker, barcode or certificate alone does not prove authenticity.
Start with the exact figure and release
Record the maker, figure or character name, product code, claimed edition, and release or rerelease date. If the seller identifies a region, record that too: packaging and labels can vary between releases and markets.
Find a maker-issued product listing, counterfeit notice or support page for that specific release. Compare the item with those references rather than with a generic checklist or another version of the figure. For Good Smile Company products, its bootleg information page recommends buying through its official store or partner shops and explains how to ask support about a suspected fake.
Compare several details, not one supposed giveaway
Ask for current photographs of the actual item, not only stock images. Inspect the figure and packaging together, including the box’s front, back and sides, the underside or back of the base, and any certificate or numbered mark. A magnifier can help read small print or molded marks, but magnification is only an inspection aid.

- Maker and copyright marks: Compare logos and copyright text on the box and base with references for the same release.
- Product identifiers: Check product codes and barcodes against the maker’s release-specific information.
- Packaging and labels: Compare layout, print and any license sticker, allowing for documented regional or release differences.
- Product-specific details: Check included parts, markings and other details identified by the maker for that item.
Good Smile says warning signs are not present on every bootleg, and a license sticker may differ by release or region; some items print license information on the box or have no separate label. Its guidance states: “Not all bootleg will match the characteristics described above, therefore, we cannot guarantee that there is no bootleg without those characteristics.” In practice, one matching detail—or one absent sticker—is not enough to certify or reject an item.
Use identifiers only for the release they describe
Identifiers can change between rereleases. Good Smile’s figma Joker notice documents different genuine JAN codes: the first edition, rerelease and second rerelease share one code, while the third rerelease uses another. That example applies to that figure; it is not a code pattern to apply to other products.

Find out what the edition number means
“Edition size” and “edition number” are different claims. Edition size is the stated quantity in a run; an individual edition number identifies a particular piece when the maker numbers pieces in that run. Neither the number’s format nor the practice of numbering is universal.
For example, Sideshow says most of its Collector Edition products have an announced edition size and unique edition number, while sixth-scale figures have no specific edition number unless otherwise stated. These are Sideshow’s product-line practices, not a rule for all figures. Check the maker’s page for the exact item before treating a missing number as suspicious.

Published quantities are also brand-specific. Mattel’s FAQ defines Limited Edition Barbie dolls as produced in quantities of 35,000 or fewer and calls dolls made in greater quantities Collectible dolls; it also says exact production numbers are not released publicly. That threshold describes Mattel’s Barbie categories, not a general standard for collectible figures.
Match numbers to the item and issuer’s records
If a figure has a serial or edition number, compare it with its certificate and any issuer record. Make sure the record describes the same product and, where an image is available, that the image and identifying details match the physical item. A number that leads to a different product or image is a reason to pause and contact the issuer.

Verification systems vary. Upper Deck describes matching a serial-numbered hologram on an item to its certificate and checking the hologram ID in its database. PSA/DNA describes matching a certification record and image to the item and its identifying label. These are examples of issuer-specific checks, not registries for collectible figures generally.
A certificate can be detached, copied or paired with the wrong object, and an edition notation may not mean what a seller claims. Collectaneum discusses how a number can be authorized, assigned by a dealer, fabricated as a limitation or copied. Treat paperwork as one part of the comparison, not independent proof.

What to do when the evidence is inconclusive
- Ask the seller for clear photos of the actual box from several sides, the figure, base marks, barcode and any certificate or number.
- Compare them with maker references for the claimed release and region. Check whether an apparent difference is documented for a rerelease or market.
- Contact the maker or number issuer through its current support or verification route. For Good Smile Company, its counterfeit guidance asks for package front, back and side photos, the actual item, and the copyright text on the base; it warns that insufficient photos may prevent an assessment.
- Describe the outcome precisely: a visual comparison is not formal authentication unless the maker, issuer or qualified authenticator has made that determination.
For an item-specific inquiry, include the product name and code, claimed release, region if known, and the photos the maker requests. Follow the relevant brand’s current instructions; another company’s verification process may not apply.
