Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not a scene-for-scene remake of the original Final Fantasy VII. It is the second game in a three-title reimagining: Final Fantasy VII Remake expands the original’s Midgar chapter through the party’s escape, while Rebirth follows the party across the wider world and covers events up to the Forgotten Capital. The games also differ in exploration, combat, optional activities and progression.
How much of the original story does Rebirth cover?
The original Final Fantasy VII tells the full story in one game. The remake project divides and reimagines it across three standalone titles. Director Tetsuya Nomura described each entry as “a standalone game in its own right” in a PlayStation Blog interview.
Final Fantasy VII Remake covers the story through the party’s escape from Midgar, expanding the events that the original tells in that portion. Rebirth picks up after the escape and follows the party through multiple regions to the Forgotten Capital, rather than retelling the whole original game. Square Enix describes those respective scopes on its Rebirth product page and Remake page.
The route is not identical to the original’s. Nomura said that the order of locations differs and that Wutai is not part of Rebirth’s route; it is reserved for the next game. That means Rebirth follows the original’s broad journey while changing how and when parts of it unfold.

Spoilers: Rebirth’s endpoint and route
Rebirth’s story portion reaches the Forgotten Capital. The developers also confirm that Wutai is left for the following title. Those are scope and sequencing differences; they do not, by themselves, establish how every plot event compares or whether one version is better.
How do the world and exploration compare?
The original moves through a range of locations, but Rebirth is built around a much broader explorable journey than Remake’s Midgar-focused setting. Square Enix describes a trip across multiple regions with distinct environments. In a 2023 developer interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed rebuilding the large world map with towns and dungeons, and described stories, battles, minigames and the option to return to regions after the main quest has moved on.

This makes exploration a larger part of Rebirth’s structure: instead of staying within one sprawling city, the party travels through different regions and can revisit some of them. The official descriptions establish the scope and activities, not a universal measure of open-world quality; whether the added scale works for you depends on how much you enjoy optional exploration.
What changed in combat and the playable party?
Square Enix describes Rebirth’s combat as a blend of action and strategy, adding synergy skills and abilities. These let the party fight as a coordinated group in new ways; they are concrete additions to the combat design, not proof that it is objectively better than the original’s turn-based system.

Red XIII also changes status between the games. He accompanies the party in Remake, but becomes an official playable party member in Rebirth, according to Nomura in the developer interview. That gives players direct control of a character who was not playable in the first remake installment.
How much optional content does Rebirth add?
Rebirth offers optional stories, battles, minigames and regional revisits alongside its main quest. Hamaguchi characterized the volume of side content as “nearly double” the main quest content in his 2023 interview. That is a developer’s comparison of content volume—not a measured playtime figure—so it should not be read as a promise that optional play takes twice as long.

Does progress carry over from Remake?
No. Hamaguchi said the trilogy’s games are balanced independently, so levels and abilities do not transfer between installments. Eligible save data can unlock limited bonuses instead; Square Enix’s FAQ gives summon materia as an example for qualifying Remake save data on PS5 or PC. These bonuses are not an imported character build.

No. Square Enix calls Rebirth a standalone game for fans and newcomers, and says it includes an in-game recap video. Starting with Rebirth is possible, but playing Remake first is a useful choice if you want the expanded Midgar setup and more context for the characters’ relationships and ongoing story.
