If a Steam game won’t open on your Steam Deck, start with low-risk checks: install SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and temporarily disable third-party apps running in Desktop Mode. Then check that game’s compatibility and requirements, verify its installed files, and—if appropriate—test a different Proton setting for that game. A game that never opens can have a different cause from one that launches and then crashes, so note exactly what happens and any error message.
Start with updates, a restart, and a clean test
Valve recommends updating SteamOS and restarting the Deck when troubleshooting instability. It also advises temporarily disabling third-party applications in Desktop Mode and then retrying the game. These checks can help identify a system or software conflict before you change settings for the game itself. - Install any available SteamOS update.
- Restart the Steam Deck and try launching the game again.
- If you use third-party applications in Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and retry.
Check whether the game supports Steam Deck
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility label and system requirements. Valve uses four categories:
- Verified: The game works well on Deck by default, without additional modification.
- Playable: The game works, but may need manual configuration.
- Unsupported: Valve currently does not consider it playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested it. This is not proof that the game is broken.
For a Playable or Unsupported game, inspect the listed Verified requirements and note which ones it does not meet. Also check whether the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements match the Deck. Compatibility status is useful context, not a diagnosis of why a particular launch failed. Verify the game’s installed files
Missing or damaged installed files can stop a game from starting. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes. Valve notes that one or more files may fail verification normally when they are local configuration files; those files should not be replaced. Try a different Proton compatibility setting for that game
Proton is a per-game compatibility option, not a guaranteed fix. To test it, highlight the game in your Library, press the Menu button, and choose Properties > Compatibility. Select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version, as Valve recommends. Retry the game after changing the setting.

If the game was installed as a Linux version only, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version. Whether Proton resolves the problem depends on the specific game. Valve describes this setting in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.
If Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform”
Valve says this message means the game is not supported on the current operating system. Check the game’s Steam Store system requirements for supported operating systems and hardware. File verification does not address an operating-system compatibility mismatch, and Proton is not a guaranteed workaround; its effectiveness depends on the game. Escalate with the details that help diagnose the problem
If the game still will not launch, contact the game developer or Steam Support. Include the game’s name, the exact error text—or a precise description of what happens—the SteamOS version, any recent changes, and the steps you already tried. That information helps distinguish a game-specific issue from a Deck-wide one. Valve also suggests checking SteamOS and Steam Deck discussions; for persistent stability or performance problems, it says the Steam Deck Beta may be worth trying. Rollback, repair, factory reset, and re-imaging are options for broader SteamOS problems, not routine first steps when a single game fails to launch. Their effects differ:

- Rollback: Returns to a previous known-good SteamOS version while retaining user data. Valve describes it as useful if a recent OS modification may have caused the issue or the current OS may be corrupted.
- Repair SteamOS: Attempts to preserve games and personal content.
- Factory reset: Clears local data.
- Re-image: Fully wipes user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems.
Because reset and re-imaging can erase local data, don’t use them as casual troubleshooting for one game. Review Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions before choosing an OS recovery option.
