For most Steam Deck owners, a reputable 512GB UHS-I microSD card is a sensible starting point. Compare current local prices per gigabyte and buy from a trusted seller; Samsung EVO Select 512GB is one value-oriented candidate, while PNY XLR8 Gaming is an alternative whose manufacturer explicitly lists Steam Deck compatibility. Neither is a guaranteed cheapest buy, and package speed claims alone do not establish faster game loading on the Deck.
What microSD card works with Steam Deck?
Valve says every Steam Deck model supports microSD storage expansion, and its support guide states: “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” That makes UHS-I with at least a U3/Class 3 rating the compatibility baseline; you do not need to buy a card solely because its packaging advertises a higher peak speed. These are options to compare rather than a live ranking: prices, stock, warranties, and exact product variants depend on region and seller. Check the specific SKU and current offer before buying.

How to choose capacity and value
512GB is a useful comparison point for a large game library, but the right capacity depends on how many games you keep installed and what you want to spend. Compare the total price and price per gigabyte among reputable sellers in your region; capacity alone does not make a card a better value.
- Confirm the card is UHS-I and meets Valve’s Class 3-or-better guidance.
- Check the exact capacity and SKU: specifications can differ within a product family.
- Verify the seller, return policy, and applicable warranty before ordering.
- Choose additional ratings because they fit a real use, not simply because the package has a larger number.
What the speed ratings mean for a Steam Deck
UHS-I describes the bus category; Valve’s stated baseline is UHS-I, Class 3 or better. U3 and V30 are sustained-write classifications, while A2 is an application-performance rating. They describe different characteristics and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of game loading.

Samsung advertises up to 130MB/s read for the listed EVO Select, and PNY advertises up to 100MB/s read and 90MB/s write for XLR8 Gaming. Those manufacturer figures do not establish that either card loads Steam Deck games faster than the other. No controlled Steam Deck comparison for these listed cards is established here, so there is no supported loading-time winner.
Format a new card on the Deck
Steam Deck uses ext4 with casefolding for microSD cards and formats them to the proper format, according to the Steam Deck FAQ. Use the Deck’s own format function for a new card. Formatting erases data stored on the card, so copy off anything you need first.

A comparison page’s September 15, 2026 PNY Elite-X price is likewise historical rather than a live quote.
